40,000 People Attended Prague Pride Parade

The 8th annual Prague Pride took place from August 6 to August 12. The week-long festival celebrating the LGBT community had a record attendance of 90,000 people. Five thousand more people took part in the celebrations compared to last year. Around 40,000 people watched Saturday’s parade which set off from Wenceslas Square and ended at Prague’s Letná plain, where a concert is held. This was the sixth annual parade, the first one in 2011 had some 7,000 participants.  Some Czech political parties also had a big presence in the parade. The Greens and the Pirates both had contingents behind banners and carried signs showing support of LGBT issues and rights.  Festival organizers rented an area of 35,00 square meters on Letná, where they placed three large podiums, information stands for various non-profit organizations and an HIV testing booth.  The main focus of this year’s LGBT festival was on a bill, due to be debated in Parliament in the autumn, that would allow gays and lesbians to enter into regular marriages, which would give them the same rights as heterosexuals. LGBTI people still cannot adopt or foster children, and registered partners have no right to joint property and widow’s or widower’s pension, the organizers said....

Prague Looks to Limit Car Pollution

About 9 percent of vehicles in Prague with the highest emissions produce 60 percent of the air pollution particles, according to results of a Czech Technical University (ČVUT) study. The study confirmed that the most important source of air pollution in Prague is road transport and associated emissions from fuel combustion. Most problematic are the ultra-fine particles from diesel-powered vehicles that contain cancer-causing substances.  The most polluting vehicles were found to lack particle filters or have inoperative filters. Drivers with engine trouble often bypass the filter rather than fix the main problem with the engine. Noise Meters to be Installed at Prague 1

For many years, Prague 1 has been struggling with an unbearable noise level in a number of its residential districts. The most critical situation with noise is in the Old Town, in the streets of Dlouhá, V Kolkovně, Kozí, and Masná. By the end of August, the first noise level meters will be installed mostly at the main locations in Prague 1. Prague’s City Hall receives several complaints from residents regarding the noise levels especially at night. These new noise level meters will primarily serve and signal the City Police once the number exceeds 64 decibels. A similar meter is already in the Steampunk bar in V Kolkovne Street, where it is currently running its test operation, but for measuring the interior noise. The meter also records the number of people in the bar.  According to Ivan Solil of Prague 1 Counselor for Security, the first test screens will mainly be installed on camera poles in the streets of Kolkovna, Kozí, Masná and Dlouha. Metro Driver Lets Two People Drive Train Through Prague for "LowCost Race" Competition

The Prague Transport Authority called the behavior “unacceptable” after a clip from inside the driver’s cab was posted on the LowCost Race’s website. It shows the pair take selfies in the cab before climbing into the driver’s seat. One woman excitedly pushes a button, making the passenger train move, while the driver stands alongside her. Her friend then sits in his seat while and appears to use a lever to control the speed of the locomotive. The race takes two-member teams with a limited budget across Europe with the winner traveling the furthest. The pair involved in the incident in Prague faced a challenge to “drive something unusual” as the race started on Friday. Prague Transport Authority spokeswoman Aneta Řehková says it was a failure of the driver and a serious breach of working rules. The driver now faces an unspecified punishment.  Race spokesman Miky Skoda said he is happy nothing serious happened and claimed the organizers did not encourage the racers to drive the subway train.  Prague police spokesman Jan Danek said the incident is being investigated. Dutchmen Who Beat Up Waiter in Prague Face Attempted Murder Charge

Two Dutch who assaulted a waiter in Prague in April, may face longer prison sentences. The Public Prosecutor in the Czech Republic is charging them with attempted murder, which means they can face up to 18 years in prison. The charges have been toughed up because medical reports give a better picture of the injuries the man suffered when he was set upon by the group. The two Dutch brothers were initially charged with inflicting serious bodily harm. The brothers were part of a group of seven Dutch arrested for assaulting the waiter in Prague on April 21st. Two, including a police officer from Amsterdam, were released shortly after their arrest. Three others were given suspended prison sentences and banned from entering the Czech Republic for five years. The men, who were on a stag weekend, reportedly attacked the waiter after he told them they could not drink their own alcohol on the café terrace. Air-Conditioned Buses Stopped Running Due to Defects

Due to some faults on the wiring, all 60 new air-conditioned buses from SOR Libchavy were shut down by the Prague Transport Company this weekend. “On the basis of the damage to the alternator buses in SOR NB 18 EURO VI Step C buses, the DPP decided to shut down the vehicle of this type for safety reasons,” DPP spokeswoman Aneta Řehková confirmed.  According to Řehková, the defect was applied to the manufacturer. “Ensured immediate control of all these buses. As a result of the manufacturer’s statement, the vehicle was re-released on Monday. Seven pieces remain weaned until the defects discovered, which are dealt with by the manufacturer in the framework of the provided guarantees,” said spokesman Řehková. Prague Public Transit Company bought a total of 150 machines from SOR Libchavy for one billion crowns. These are some of the first buses in Prague that are equipped with full air-conditioning. However, due to the defects that have occurred, DPP will file a complaint with the manufacturer. Bus passengers at Václav Havel Airport would have to wait for a few more days for comfortable traveling. Prague Best City in the World for Remote Working

New research has revealed the top 15 cities worldwide that are best for remote working and Prague is on top. Inspired by the top 15 cities listed in InterNation’s Expat City Ranking Report, Powwownow analysed the cost of living, average monthly salary, internet speed, price of coffee, and cost of public transport in different places across the world. Cities were individually scored on each factor and ranked by the total number of points, to calculate the top 15 cities around the world. Calculating an overall ranking for each city, Prague was revealed to be the best city worldwide for remote workers. Zurich was revealed as the city where people earn the highest wages, at £4,430 average monthly net salary. Mixed reactions: Prague Police Photo of Woman in Lingerie

Last Wednesday morning, the City Police of Prague posted a Facebook photo of a woman in lingerie next to a police car. The policeman captioned it with “Hi guys, do you have a recruitment department in Prague 7? For those looking for another meaning in this photo, we got the photo directly from the Prague 7 police officers for the hot summer days and it’s not about hunting”. The post stirred mixed reactions among people as some people talked about sexism while others took it as humor. Prague Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Metro A Liine

On Sunday, August 12th of this year, the Prague City Transport Company will celebrate the 40th-anniversary commencement of the Metro A line.  The first ride will take place at 11:45 from Dejvická station to Lenin Station and then towards Namesti Miru station. This route will commemorate the first section of Line A, which has been in operation since August 12, 1978. The last exit of the set is planned at 15.10 from Dejvická station in the direction of Náměstí Míru. Following the tradition, all train runs will be accompanied by station radio reports and train drivers will wear uniforms accordingly to each period era.  Soviet subways 81-71 demonstrate the most typical representative of the Prague metro operation. The technical specifications and the requirements that complied with the kit allowed their operation on all three routes of the Prague metro (unlike the predecessor – the Ecs set which was only run on route C). August 6-12: Prague Pride

The 8th edition of the Prague Pride festival will take place from Monday 6 until Sunday 12 August 2018. Prague Pride is the largest pride in the Middle and Eastern Europe. The programme comprises of approx. 100 social, sport, cultural and other events and its peak is the Prague Pride Parade, also called as “rainbow parade“ with allegorical vehicles, extravagant costumes and other fancy dressed people.  On Friday before noon, you can take part in the Prague LGBT tour. In the afternoon you can visit the international Vogue dance competition Pride Ball Apocalypse, and in the evening the big music show Dance Divas with Heather Small from M People, this year’s Czech representative at Eurovision Mikolas Josef, and 30 more artists. Sprinkling Trucks for the Summer in Prague

The roads have been using sprinkling trucks for about 22 days now since the start of May 28. Last year, the city used the sprinkling truck for a total of 16 days to cool people down for the summer. Cisterns run into the streets whenever the temperature rises for more than 25 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days. Weather channels have stated that the temperature for this week will reach 37 degrees Celcius.  One sprinkling truck can be used for an average of 17 kilometers of Prague streets. They took a total of 12,700 kilometers in 22 days. A day of sprinkling and mist costs about 869,000 CZK.  Sprinkling and fogging is part of annual summer road maintenance. “The reason is not only climate rejuvenation, but above all the reduction of dustiness and intensity of ground-level ozone,” TSK spokesman Barbora Lišková said.  In these days, when temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius, the roads in Central Prague and adjacent city areas are cooled by sprinkling and mist. Dismas: Cafe Without Prejudice

As one might guess from the name, Dismas is a cafe that does not hold any prejudice against those who have records of crime. The main objective is to achieve successful re-socialization and re-integration of people who just finished their prison sentence.  The first cafe was located in Na Poříčí Street and opened in July 2014. At the end of February 2016, they moved to Růžová Street, where they gained more recognition and support from Prague 1 City District. It was a difficult process moving from Na Poříčí to Růžová, but the Ministry of Justice provided the staff with a fully equipped kitchen.
