Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is back in Prague today. His arrival has led to the closure of Prague Castle and extra police patrols across the area. Czech President Petr Pavel is expected to meet with Zelensky during the visit. Zelensky last visited Prague in July 2023, during his first trip abroad after the war in Ukraine began. That visit was also kept quiet until the last minute for security reasons — and this one is no different. Prague Castle is shut to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All ticket offices, gardens, museums, and visitor centers are closed for the entire day. Zelensky is expected to meet not only with President Pavel but also with Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský. His wife, Olena Zelenska, is also in Prague with her own separate schedule. According to Czech Radio’s Radiožurnál, all signs point to Zelensky arriving today, though no official confirmation has been given. Police spokesperson Ondřej Moravčík said the visit would not affect weekend traffic but gave no further details. The Castle will partially reopen after 4:30 p.m., but parts of the first and second courtyards will stay closed, said Castle spokesman Vojtěch Šeliga. During...
Police closed Prague’s Charles Bridge on Saturday afternoon after a man climbed onto one of its statues. The man, reportedly a foreign national, was seen sitting on the Pietà statue. According to police, he was initially armed with a snap-off carpet knife, which he later discarded. Emergency responders, including firefighters and paramedics, arrived on site alongside a police negotiator who attempted to communicate with the man. Authorities confirmed the closure and ongoing intervention via the X network, stating: “Charles Bridge is currently closed due to the intervention of IZS units involving a man seated on a statue. Negotiators are on the scene.” Several units from the Prague Police Department were dispatched, including officers from the river division, who patrolled the Vltava River below the bridge. Images from the scene showed officers carrying long firearms, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. Police spokesman Richard Hrdina confirmed that the incident drew a large-scale response, but did not provide further details on the man’s identity or motive. The bridge remained closed to the public for the duration of the standoff. Důvodem proč muž stojí na soše je to, že chce spáchat sebevraždu. Prague’s Hradčanská metro station will close for at least ten months beginning in late 2025 due to a major reconstruction project. During this period, trains on Line A will bypass the station without stopping, significantly affecting public transport in one of the capital’s busiest areas. The closure was announced by the Prague 6 city district, which confirmed that the work will last until mid-2026. The reconstruction will focus on replacing outdated infrastructure that has been in service for nearly three decades. All escalators, which have operated for 28 years, will be completely replaced. In addition, the station’s platforms, main vestibule, and exits will be renovated. A full upgrade of the station’s technical systems, including cabling, pipelines, ventilation, and heating, is also planned. Lighting throughout the station will switch entirely to LED technology to improve energy efficiency and visibility. Architectural preservation is also a key part of the project. The marble wall coverings and aluminum relief panels, originally installed when the station opened in 1978, will be dismantled and cleaned. Those in poor condition will be substituted with faithful replicas to maintain the original appearance of the station. To allow better visibility of the station’s historic design, some shops currently located...
Agatha Christie’s rarely staged mystery Black Coffee will be performed in Prague on May 5 and 7 at Rock Café (Národní 116), and on May 17 at Divadlo D21 (Záhřebská 468). All shows start at 20:00. Tickets are available here The only play Christie wrote exclusively for the stage featuring Hercule Poirot, Black Coffee plunges audiences into a suspense-filled country estate, where manners are polished and motives are murky. The story begins when a revolutionary scientific formula is stolen, and its creator, Sir Claude Amory, is found dead just before Poirot arrives. The detective must unravel the truth before the formula falls into the wrong hands. Following the success of Murder on the Orient Express, The Mad and Merry Men theatre troupe brings this rarely performed gem back to life. Actor and producer Gordon L. Schmitz, reprising his role as Poirot, says the play reveals an earlier, less refined version of the detective. “Christie hadn’t yet pinned down all his characteristics,” Schmitz explains. “In one scene, he’s meant to use jiu-jitsu—which is wildly un-Poirot. We came up with a more elegant solution.” Written in the late 1920s and first staged in 1930, Black Coffee even touches on atomic science long...

On the occasion of May Day, when couples across the Czech Republic traditionally kiss beneath blooming cherry trees, Air Bank is rolling out a unique feature: an interactive map to help users find cherry trees in their area. The map, available through the My Air app or directly online, offers users a chance to easily locate cherry trees across the Czech Republic. Air Bank spokesperson Alžběta Honsová explained that this initiative is designed to bring together modern technology and Czech folklore. “The map is easily accessible through the My Air app or our website,” said Honsová. “If people want to follow the tradition of kissing under a blossoming cherry tree, they don’t need to worry about finding the right one. While our app is primarily focused on managing finances, we’re excited to offer something extra, like helping users find the perfect tree.” May Day, or První Máj, is a beloved holiday in the Czech Republic, celebrating love and nature. Traditionally, couples kiss under cherry trees to honor the beauty of spring and to express affection for each other. This romantic tradition is largely inspired by the famous 19th-century Czech poem “Máj” (May) by Karel Hynek Mácha, which paints a picture of love and...

One of the city’s most visited summer spots, Petynka swimming pool, will reopen for the season on May 1, welcoming guests with a range of new features. This year, a mobile application will give visitors real-time updates on water temperature, air temperature, and the number of guests and free parking spots. The app also offers the convenience of online ticket purchases, reducing wait times at the entrance. Those planning to spend a full day at the pool will enjoy the newly added refreshment stand, now capable of preparing hot meals—a change that not only broadens the menu but also speeds up service. Meanwhile, the old benches, which had lost both function and appeal, have been replaced by modern seating throughout the premises. Other upgrades include anti-slip tiling in the main shower area, and the installation of private, lockable shower cabins—a change likely to be welcomed by regulars. Behind the scenes, the pool’s technology has been updated, and new security cameras have been installed to ensure greater safety and monitoring. Admission prices remain unchanged from last year: 250 CZK for an all-day pass 330 CZK for one adult and one child 420 CZK for one adult with two children – a...
Just five minutes from Náplavka, beneath the historic walls of Vyšehrad, Malby’s Café offers a slice of Cuba far from the Caribbean. Since opening in December 2024, it’s quietly become a favorite among locals, expats, and travelers looking for something different. The café was co-founded by Austin Malby, a Cuban-American from Key West, Florida, and Bořek, a longtime Prague resident. More than just a business, it’s a personal project shaped by shared values. “We just want to be true to ourselves, true to Cuba, and true to the spirit of Cuba,” they say. The café’s logo—a sketch of a Cuban house—has a touching backstory. It’s based on a handmade miniature home from Key West, passed down through Austin’s family. “When we opened the café, to me, it was just obvious,” he recalls. Each founder brings a different skill set. Austin has a background in hospitality and sales, having worked everywhere from sandwich shops to management roles. Božek heads the coffee and cocktail program, building on years of experience running events in Prague. Inside, the space is a world away from the city’s trend-driven minimalism. There are stained-glass windows, vintage furniture, and artwork inspired by Alphonse Mucha. Austin’s mother-in-law designed much...
