The Rise of Czech Cricket: Our Interview with the Oldest Club in the Country

Prague Cricket Club (PCC) is the oldest and the most successful cricket club in the Czech Republic. Its main goal? To spread their love for cricket to as many people as possible. “Once you start playing or watching cricket, you start loving the game. It is called ‘a gentleman’s game’. But I would disagree because anybody can love it,” says Shreetama Dey, the brand manager for Prague Cricket Club who volunteers for the club. While the origins of cricket in this part of the world can be traced back to 1927, Prague Cricket Club was founded in 1997, after a group from commonwealth countries joined together, unified by their love for the sport. Since then, the club has achieved a great deal of accomplishments and has managed to pique the interest of many. “Prague Cricket Club has won 80% of all national cricket tournaments since 2007, has represented Czechia in the 2022 European Cricket League, and has produced many talented players for the Czech national team,” says Shreetama. Running Festival is Around the Corner! 7,000 Runners to Take Part in the UniCredit Prague Relay

The most fun summer run is here. The UniCredit Prague Relay, where friends and colleagues compete over four five-kilometer stretches, will take place on the 27th and 28th of June at the Prague Exhibition Centre. “Up to seven thousand competitors could take part in both days. The Prague Relay is always a celebration of movement, life, and of course there is also a good dose of competition,” said Carlo Capalbo, president of the RunCzech organizing team, which also organizes the world-famous Prague ½ Marathon, Prague Marathon, and Grand Prix races in the capital. “I am very pleased that we can build on last year and once again be a partner of the UniCredit Prague Relay and the seven thousand participants of this beautiful race,” said Tomáš Drábek, Head of Retail Banking at UniCredit Bank. This Saturday: ‘L’Etape by Tour de France’ Race Comes to Czechia

Even though the start of the Tour de France is still a few weeks away, amateur cyclists will have the chance to get a taste of its atmosphere much earlier. The third edition of the L’Etape Czech Republic race is taking place this Saturday, and once again, it is attracting thousands of enthusiastic participants. The long (142 km) and medium (103 km) routes have been sold out for quite some time. The interest was so high that the organizers even increased the original limits to accommodate five hundred and fifteen hundred participants, respectively. Registration is now only open for the shortest option, a 65-kilometer route. Online registration is available until Thursday, and on-site registration will be possible on Friday. Roads are closed throughout the entire length of the routes. The iconic starting and finishing point at Strahov, which hosted the 1981 World Championships, and a scenic passage through the charming regions of Křivoklát and Beroun. While the race itself is scheduled for Saturday, the festivities will commence in the village of Strahov on Friday from three o’clock. Police Put Plans in Place as 20,000 West Ham Fans Head to Prague

As many as 20,000 West Ham fans are set to travel to Prague for Wednesday night’s Europa Conference League Final. The Hammers face Italian side Fiorentina in their first European final in 47 years. The club has an allocation of around 6,000 at the 19,360-capacity Fortuna Arena, but more than three times that number are expected to make the trip. Supporters without a ticket will be able to watch the game at a fan zone in Letna Park, which has been designated for Hammers fans. The area will be large enough to host the thousands of ticketless supporters. There is set to be a huge police presence, and Prague and West Ham have worked with local authorities to help ensure fans can congregate together safely. The West Ham squad are due to fly out to Prague tonight and David Moyes will lead an open training session at the Sparta Academy, home of Sparta Prague youth teams, tomorrow. The Europa Conference League is in its second season and is a third tier European club football competition after the Champions League and Europa League. The European League of American Football Begins Sunday

The European League of American Football begins Sunday. For the first time ever, the Czech Republic will be represented. The third edition of the European equivalent of the overseas National Football League (NFL) starts this Sunday, June 4th. Since last year, 6 teams have joined the league meaning 17 teams will compete in the 2023 season. A Netflix crew is following the action and a documentary is in the works. The popularity of American football in Europe is growing every year, as evidenced by the creation of the European Professional Football League (ELF). The ELF has a worldwide reach of over half a billion households who are anxiously watching to see which team will be this year’s winner. “This is a great opportunity for our players to play at the highest European level and show that we have what it takes,” says Prague Lions head coach Zach Harrod. In the first year of the league, only 8 teams participated – six from Germany and one each from Poland and Spain. Sparta Prague Win 37th Czech Title After Nine Years Wait

Sparta Prague won a 37th Czech football title and their first in nine years following a goalless draw at FC Slovacko on Tuesday. Sparta have a three-point lead over arch-rivals Slavia Prague with one match to go and a better record from the regular season, which makes them unbeatable. Coached by Danish manager Brian Priske, Sparta have secured a spot in the Champions League qualifiers for next season. The Prague side last won the title in 2014, with their first league trophy dating back to 1912. The club was founded as Královské Vonohrady, or King’s Vineyard, in 1893. They became AC Sparta a year later. The eternal rivalry between Sparta and Slavia, the ‘Derby S’ began in 1896 with a friendly match whose result is still disputed to this day. Why 10,000 Police Officers Will Be Deployed in Conference League Final in Prague

There will be over 10,000 police officers drawn from all over Czech Republic to provide security during the Europa Conference League final in Prague on June 7. It follows the assault of unarmed West Ham supporters by AZ Alkmaar fans last week. The heavy police deployment is a proactive move to prevent violence in the highlight game between the Hammers and Fiorentina. UEFA has scheduled an emergency meeting in Prague on Friday. Scotland Yard, Italian, Czech and National Police Chief’s Councils of Great Britain will be in attendance. It will be a follow-up to strategies in place geared towards beefing up security as threats during such matches are imminent. The number of police and private security officers on duty in the city will outnumber the number of ticketed club supporters of West Ham and Fiorentina. UEFA gave these two clubs 4,890 legitimate tickets each. The seating capacity of West Ham’s London Stadium is roughly 66,000, whilst Fiorentina’s Stadio Artemio Franchi holds 43,147 people. Great News: Prague International Marathon Will Start from Wenceslas Square!

The most prestigious Czech sporting event is almost here, as the 27th Prague International Marathon will take place on May 7. And the organizers have great news about this year‘s edition: Thousands of runners will set off on the world’s most beautiful 42 kilometres from the Wenceslas Square. “Compared to previous years, when the race start was at the Old Town Square, we have now managed to arrange with Prague representatives to start in the lower part of Wenceslas Square, at Můstek, which brings several advantages. Five Teams Will be Participating in the Unique “Battle of the Teams”

The Battle of the Teams has become for many runners a special race because it turns a traditionally individual sport into a team event. A sport that connects professional athletes who have often been fierce competitors in the past. A sport which connects their teams with hobby runners who are participating in the Prague International Marathon. The unique teams made their debut last year as part of The Prague International Marathon and will continue the tradition this year. There will be five teams – the defending champions from Generali Česká pojišťovna together with ČEZ Group, Mattoni, Prague Airport and also Rohlik.cz. Each will soon introduce its captain. Once they have been named, the Marathon´s All runners (hobby runners) will get the opportunity to join a team of their choosing, based on who they think will finish with the fastest collective time. Czech Republic to Host 2024 Ice Hockey World Championship

The IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will return to the Czech Republic after nine years. The 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be held in Prague and Ostrava from 10-26 May 2024. This will be the eleventh time that the Czech Republic has hosted the world’s premier ice hockey event. The Czechs will take over from Finland and Latvia, and the world’s best ice hockey players will once again compete for world medals in Prague and Ostrava in 2024. “Although there is still more than a year to go until the start of the competitions, the Organising Committee is already working hard on the preparations. Kenyan Konga Dominated the Sold Out Prague Half Marathon

The Kenyan Roncer Kipkorir Konga is the winner of this year´s Prague Half Marathon, with time of 59:42. Uganda’s Maxwell Kortek Rotich finished second, followed by the third Geoffrey Kimutai Koech of Kenya. The fastest woman is the presumed favourite, Irine Jepchumba Kimais, who crossed the line in 1:06:00. The best Czech performance was recorded by Patrik Vebr, who made his debut on the track with a time of 1:05:42 and finished 11th. Jiri Homolac finished one second behind him. Moira Stewart was the fastest Czech female pro athlete at the popular race. Almost 12,000 runners took part in the Prague Half Marathon. The Prague International Marathon will follow in early May. Prior to the start, the organizers and pro athletes were worried about the cold and rainy weather. Finally, it didn’t rain then and the temperature was definitely higher than last year. However, a headwind bothered the runners towards the end of the race.
