Czech Boxers to Boycott World Championships

Boxers from Britain and the Czech Republic on Tuesday joined a United States-led boycott of the world championships, deepening a standoff over the International Boxing Association’s Russian president and his insistence on letting Russian fighters compete with their country’s flag and anthem. British governing body GB Boxing said it would not take part in the women’s world championships in India next month and that the men’s championships in May are “under review.” GB Boxing cited a rift between the IBA and the International Olympic Committee which has endangered boxing’s place on the Olympic program, and the IBA’s decision to defy IOC recommendations and allow Russia and its ally Belarus to compete with national symbols, not as neutral athletes. “This has put further distance between IBA and the Olympic movement in addition to the significant, longstanding issues over sporting integrity, governance, transparency and financial management which the IOC has asked IBA to address to protect boxing´s place on the Olympic program,” GB Boxing said in a statement. “GB Boxing condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has solidarity with the people, boxers, coaches and officials of Ukraine.” Czech Boxing Association Marek Simak confirmed a boycott in comments to Czech public radio,...

Czech Republic International Jakub Jankto Comes Out as Gay

Czech Republic international and Sparta Prague midfielder Jakub Jankto has come out as gay. The 27-year-old midfielder, who is currently on loan at Spanish club Getafe, posted an incredibly powerful video on social media to announce the news. “Hi, I’m Jakub Jankto,” he said in a video published on his Twitter page. “Like everybody else, I have my strengths, I have my weaknesses; I have a family, I have my friends. “I have a job, which I have been doing it as best as I can, for years, with seriousness, professionalism and passion. Czech PM Against Participation of Russia, Belarus in 2024 Olympics

The 2024 Paris Olympics should not allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said after the International Olympic Committee said it is keen to include them as neutral contestants. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) caused uproar after it announced that it is considering the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes as neutrals. While the US and the UN have widely backed the announcement, Poland, Ukraine, Baltic states and now Czechia, have sharply criticised the IOC’s announcements. “I absolutely cannot imagine Russian and Belarusian athletes competing there,” Fiala said while acknowledging that the sports sector has its own autonomy. The same sentiment was echoed by the Czech Olympic Committee, which said it favoured maintaining the current sanctions that would prevent these athletes from competing. The Czech committee will not go as far as boycott the Games in case Russian and Belarusian athletes participate – a move Poland, Ukraine and Baltic states said they are considering. “Of course, we will respect the will of each athlete if any of them decide not to participate in the Games. Jaromir Jagr Breaks Gretzky’s Record For Most Professional Goals

During Sunday’s game between Kladno and HC Trinec in the Czech Extraliga, hockey legend Jaromir Jagr scored the 1,099th goal of his professional career, surpassing Wayne Gretzky, who had 1,098. Gretzky tallied his 1,098 goals between the NHL, WHA (playoffs included for both), as well on the international stage for Canada. As for Jagr, his 1,099 career goals came in the NHL, KHL, and Czech leagues, one goal in the German league, as well as internationally for Czechia. Krejčíková, Siniaková Win Australian Open Doubles for 7th Major Title

Defending champions Barbora Krejčíková and Katerina Siniaková continued their exceptional Grand Slam winning streak in women’s doubles by capturing the 2023 Australian Open title in Rod Laver Arena on Sunday. No.1 seeds Krejčíková and Siniaková of the Czech Republic won their second straight title in Melbourne, and their seventh major title as a duo overall, by holding off No.10 seeds Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara of Japan 6-4, 6-3. “I’m really excited to have this trophy again,” Siniaková said in the champions’ press conference. “To look back, what we achieved last few months, it’s amazing. VIDEO: Sparta Prague Footballer Goes Viral for Scoring While Wearing a GoPro

Sparta Prague winger Lukas Haraslin has gone viral after scoring a goal in his side’s 3-1 friendly win over FC Nuremberg on Saturday whilst wearing a GoPro camera. Both sides came into the contest on a cold afternoon at Sparta’s Letna Stadium off the back of a winter break. However, the home side didn’t let their inactivity bother them as they raced into a two-goal lead inside the first 10 minutes. After Tomas Cvancara had given Sparta the ideal start four minutes in, Haraslin pounced on some terrible defending by the German side to make it 2-0 with barely seven minutes gone. As you’ll see in the footage below (at 22:40 onwards), there wasn’t much out of the ordinary with Haraslin’s goal when viewed from a traditional TV camera angle. Yes, the 26-year-old took his chance well after profiting from an error at the back, but it’s certainly not a strike that will feature in his career highlight reel. Prague International Marathon to Take Place on 7th May

The Prague International Marathon is held in Prague already for a quarter of century. David Jiricek tied it with 39 seconds left in regulation, Jiri Kulich scored late in overtime and the Czech Republic stunned Sweden 2-1 on Wednesday to advance to the world junior hockey title game. The Czech Republic will face the winner of the night semifinal between the United States and Canada. December 25-31: Prague Sports Venues to Open for Free

For the 15th year in a row, Prague is hosting a ‘free sports week’ from December 25th until December 31st. The purpose of this event is to offer everyone a chance to try out a new sport or explore new sports venues. It will be possible to make reservations to certain locations from December 23rd. During the last week of the year, residents and visitors of the Czech capital will have the opportunity to try out new sports and disciplines as badminton, squash, beach volley, floorball, martial arts and bowling. “This year, we again prepared a small Christmas present for all sports enthusiasts with a free week in all kinds of sports venues. The Central European Rally will start in Prague with the premiere of this new event scheduled for the 26th to 29th of October 2023.
