The Czech Republic will now appear on the sports scene under the one-word name Czechia. On Tuesday, the Czech Olympic Committee (COC) will ask the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to enter the new name into the international sports database. It will replace the previously name “Czech Republic”. “This is a formal step that can be implemented within a few weeks”, according to Roman Kumpošt, vice-president of the Czech Olympic Committee. Officials from various sports associations supported the gradual transition to the one-word name at the April conference. Basketball, hockey and football have already started using the unified name of Czechia. “We are following the approach of the Foreign Ministry, which has already made this change at the UN or NATO. Naturally, many other organizations have adopted this name at the international level and it is a logical outcome in sports as well. In our case, the vast majority of Olympic sports were in favour of this change,” said Roman Kumpošt, Vice-Chairman of the COC for International Relations. “Czechia” was adopted as the official name of the country in 2016, coming in addition to the longer and more widely used “Czech Republic”. The change in the database used to create sport...

The San Jose Sharks and Nashville Predators will bring the National Hockey League to the Czech Republic for the 2022 NHL Global Series. The two NHL regular season games between the Sharks and Predators will be played on October 7 and 8, 2022 at the O2 Arena in Prague. The Predators upgraded their roster in the offseason by trading for veteran defenseman Ryan McDonagh and signing skilled forward Nino Niederreiter. The NHL’s first game in Europe since 2019 nearly ran into a snag when the Czech Foreign Ministry informed the NHL that Russian players were not welcome in Prague due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But the Czech government reversed their stance on Sept. 29. The Sharks have two Russian-born players, left-wingers Alexander Barabanov and Evgeny Svechnikov, and the Predators have Russian center Yakov Trenin on their roster. The 2022 NHL Global Series will mark the ninth season overall that the NHL has traveled to Europe to play regular-season games. To date, there have been five NHL regular-season games played in the Czech Republic, which have all been played at O2 Arena in Prague. This year’s games in Finland will mark the first NHL regular-season games to ever be played...

The “Czech Locomotive” – a long-distance runner Emil Zátopek – was born 100 years ago in the city of Kopřivnice. He became world-famous by winning at the 1952 Olympics Games in Helsinki (5,000m, 10,000m, and Marathon). Zátopek was also the first runner to break the 29-minute barrier in 10,000m. But it was the influence of Zatopek that spoke as much to his greatness. It is often said that someone is a man, or woman, of his or her times. Zatopek was often a man who seemed at odds with the prevailing views. His background was entirely parochial – born into a large family in what was then Czechoslovakia, apprenticed to the local Bata shoe factory, he came to athletic maturity while running, training, but most of all surviving in his Nazi-occupied homeland. As the post-war world ossified into two competing blocs during the Cold War era, Zatopek was a practising internationalist. In Helsinki, where the eastern bloc athletes were housed in a different Village from the rest of the athletes, Zatopek virtually conducted open house. He trained and chatted with whomever could be bothered to make the trek out to his accommodation. Zatopek had few training secrets other than hard...

Viktoria Plzen is in familiar waters as it prepares to play Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in the Champions League. The Czech champion has faced European heavyweights before in the group stage but hopes the results will be different this time. “We believe,” said assistant coach Pavel Horváth, the former Czech Republic playmaker who captained Plzen in some of its biggest battles in Europe´s most prestigious club competition. “We’re ready.” Plzen will play Barcelona at Camp Nou on Wednesday. Viktoria reached the group stage for the first time in 2011 and was immediately tested by Barcelona, which won 2-0 at Camp Nou and 4-0 at Plzen. Two years later, Bayern routed the Czech club 5-0 in Munich, handing Plzen its biggest defeat in European competitions, and won 1-0 win at Plzen. Manchester City was another tough opponent and won both encounters. Four years ago, Real Madrid won 5-0 at Plzen and 2-1 in Spain. All three previous campaigns looked like mission impossible but Plzen each time managed to finish third, securing at least a spot in the second-tier Europa League.
