Professional football clubs in the Czech Republic on Tuesday approved a proposal to restart the top two divisions this month after they were suspended by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Boston Bruins were supposed to open the 2020-21 NHL season at O2 Arena in Prague against the Predators., but that will no longer be happening. On Friday, the NHL postponed all international events in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. This announcement didn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Last month, in a virtual reunion of that team that began their Cup journey in Prague ten years ago, numerous Bruins players and alums expressed their doubt there would be any kind of déjà vu next season at least from where the team begins their season. “The NHLPA and the NHL remain committed to maintaining and growing our international presence,” the organizations said in a joint statement. “We hope that our fans overseas understand the need to postpone the 2020 games, but we look forward to being back with them in 2021.” The team was also set to finish training camp in Europe, with three exhibition games set to take place in Germany. The International Olympic Committee, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the government of Japan and representatives of the Tokyo city government have agreed that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad will take place from 23rd July to 8th August 2021. “It is good news for everyone that we now know the target date that we can prepare for,” said Jiří Kejval, President of the Czech Olympic Committee. “ Postponing the Olympic Games by a year later is a logical step for many reasons. It provides the organizers and other interested parties with the maximum possible time to prepare in the current situation, which remains uncertain, and will permit the completion of the qualification, and also minimize the impact on the sporting calendar.” The Paralympic Games, originally due to start on 24 August, 2020, will now take place between 24 August and 5 September, 2021. After long discussions with all stakeholders and taking into consideration the Government regulations, organizers have been forced to announce the postponement of the Volkswagen Prague Marathon 2020 (scheduled for Sunday, 3 May). “We are already looking for an alternative date and once it will be agreed with all responsible authorities we will communicate it on our official channels. All the participants will receive by email all details and additional information,” as stated on their website. The accompanying events like dm family run, Walk with dogs and Marathon Expo will be also moved. The Prague Half Marathon 2020 is now scheduled to take place on Sunday morning, 6 September 2020. The time and place of the start will be confirmed. The Golden Spike Ostrava has been postponed, as well. No substitute date for the marathon has been announced yet. Japan’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe, has proposed a one-year postponement for the Tokyo Olympics during talks with IOC president, Thomas Bach. Abe said Japan and the International Olympic Committee came to an agreement during a phone call with the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, following growing calls for the games to be delayed or canceled because of the concerns around coronavirus pandemic. The Japanese leader said they have agreed that the games would not be cancelled and will be held by the summer of 2021, his office said on Twitter. He added that he hoped to reschedule the Olympics as a proof of human victory over the coronavirus pandemic. Until a few days ago, Japan had insisted there were no plans to delay the Games—but the decision to postpone became inevitable when teams from around the world announced they would not be traveling to Tokyo in July. Dana Zatopkova, the 1952 Olympic javelin champion and wife of four-time Olympic running champion Emil Zatopek, died at the age of 97 on Friday, the Czech Olympic Committee said. “Czech sport has lost one of its greatest personalities,” the COC said in a statement. Besides the gold from the Helsinki Olympics, Zatopkova won the Olympic silver in Rome in 1960. In 1958, she set the world record of 55.73 meters at the age of 35. She became the European champion in 1954 and 1958. Zatopkova was born on Sept. 19, 1922, and shared the same birthday as her husband Zatopek, the 1948 Olympic running champion over 10,000 meters, who went on to win the 5,000, the 10,000 and the marathon at the 1952 Helsinki Games.
