Close to the Charles Bridge, in several rooms of the original Crusaders hospital and Church of the Holy Spirit, is a museum dedicated to the second oldest stone bridge in the Czech Republic.
The Charles Bridge was commissioned by Emperor Charles IV in the 14th century and completed in the early 15th century. Spanning the Vltava River, it connects the Old Town with Prague Castle and other historic districts.
The Charles Bridge Museum, established in 2010, commemorates the bridgeโs historical and cultural importance. Through its exhibits, the museum educates visitors about the bridgeโs construction, its artistic details, and its role in the history of Prague and its people. It highlights the bridgeโs function as both a transportation route and an artistic and architectural achievement.
The bridge itself is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The museum delves into its design and construction, emphasizing the engineering skills and vision required to create such a monumental structure. Built with sandstone, the bridge was a remarkable feat of medieval engineering. Its distinctive design set it apart from others of its time.
One of the bridgeโs most notable features is its collection of statues. Thirty sculptures, depicting religious figures, saints, and historical personalities, line the bridge. Originally created in the 17th and 18th centuries, many have been replaced with replicas, while the originals are preserved in the National Museum. The museum displays detailed replicas and provides insights into the artists behind them and the historical context of each figure.
The museum also explores the artistic influences that shaped the bridge over the centuries. Combining Gothic and Romanesque styles, the bridge reflects the architectural traditions of its time. This blend is evident in its pointed arches and sculptural details, making it a unique example of medieval engineering.
Visitors to the museum can follow a chronological journey through the bridgeโs history. Exhibits trace its construction under Emperor Charles IV, its repairs after floods and other challenges, and its transformation into a modern tourist attraction. The museum showcases the difficulties of building a large stone bridge over the Vltava River in an era without modern tools.
Among the highlights are documents and models illustrating the bridgeโs construction phases. A scale model shows how the bridge has changed over time. Other artifacts, including maps, prints, and paintings, depict the bridge in different periods of Pragueโs history.
