Czechia, the Land of Burgers. More Fast Food Chains Enter the Market

The Czech fast food market is expanding beyond its established players, with new international brands entering the country and existing chains opening restaurants in smaller cities.

McDonald’s and KFC continue to build their networks, while brands from Germany, the United States and Poland are looking for opportunities in the Czech Republic.

The expansion is increasingly moving beyond Prague and other major cities, with retail parks becoming an important location for new restaurants.

Burgermeister prepares Czech debut

One of the newest international brands preparing to enter the Czech market is Germany’s Burgermeister. The Berlin-based burger chain plans to open its first restaurant on Wenceslas Square at the beginning of next year.

The company already sees its Prague location as more than a single restaurant. It is also considering further locations across the country.

Popeyes and Burger King continue expanding

Burger King entered the Czech market 18 years ago and now operates around 70 restaurants. Popeyes arrived much later but has expanded quickly, opening 19 locations during its first three years in the country.

The companies are building a network that stretches from smaller regional towns to central Prague. In Králův Dvůr, a town of around 11,000 people, both Burger King and Popeyes operate at the Litavka Retail Park.

Popeyes is preparing additional restaurants at the Eden shopping centre and in the Budějovická area of Prague. The chain is also expanding into regional cities, with planned locations in Klatovy and Písek.

Five Guys adds another international brand

The Czech burger market gained another major international name last December when U.S. chain Five Guys opened its first Prague restaurant.

The restaurant is located in the former Máj department store on Národní Street. Five Guys is known for burgers prepared to order and a wide range of toppings, allowing customers to customise their meals.

Its prices, however, are generally higher than those of traditional fast food chains.

Another U.S. brand, Dave’s Hot Chicken, is also expected to enter the Czech market this year, according to consulting firm Cushman & Wakefield.

The chain specialises in spicy fried chicken and will therefore compete directly with established players such as KFC and Popeyes.

Czech chains are looking beyond their home cities

The expansion is not limited to international companies.

Czech burger chain Mama’s Burger is also developing its network. Originally based in Ostrava, the company has expanded into several larger Czech cities and operates a restaurant at Prague’s Arkády Pankrác shopping centre.

The company is also seeking franchise partners as it looks to increase the number of locations.
