Fire Breaks Out at Evropa Hotel on Prague’s Wenceslas Square

A fire erupted at the Evropa Hotel on Wenceslas Square in Prague on Thursday afternoon, causing minor disruptions to tram services.

Thick black smoke billowed from the hotel courtyard around noon, originating from roofing materials that ignited during renovation work. Sixteen fire brigades and a police helicopter responded to the scene.

As a precaution, police evacuated people from the surrounding area and halted tram and car traffic on Jindřišská Street.

The incident impacted trams operating on six routes (3, 5, 6, 9, 14, 24), prompting Prague’s transport company to reroute them.

Police clarified that the fire occurred during hotel renovations. “Workers were evacuated from the burning hotel undergoing construction,” said police spokesperson Eva Kropachova. “We blocked nearby streets to ensure emergency services had unobstructed access.”

Firefighters quickly contained the blaze and extinguished it. By 12:43, they reported the final stage of operations – searching for hidden embers and removing charred roofing materials.

The building was evacuated and the fire was quickly contained. No one was reported injured. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
