Hellichova Tram Stop to Be Renamed after Infant Jesus Statue
Prague Morning

The Hellichova tram stop in Prague 1 will soon be renamed in honour of the nearby cultural and historical sites.
Starting June 28, a Prague tram stop will bear two different names depending on the direction of travel: โPraลพskรฉ Jezulรกtkoโ for trams heading toward the city center, and โTyrลกลฏv dลฏmโ for those moving away from it.
The change was spearheaded by Jan Wolf (KDU-ฤSL), chairman of the cultural committee of the Prague City Council, after a proposal from parishioners at the Church of Our Lady Victorious. Submitted about a year ago, the plan received unanimous approval from the cityโs Topographical Commission before being cleared by the Railway Authority.
The initiative aims to highlight the nearby Church of Our Lady Victorious, home to the famed statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague, a major pilgrimage site. Wolf noted that the renaming, particularly for trams heading toward the center, will better guide the thousands of tourists who visit the church each year.
Filip Drรกpal, spokesperson for ROPID, the organization overseeing Pragueโs public transport, added that timetable changes typically take place at the start of summer holidays, aligning with the renaming.
The Infant Jesus statue, widely venerated by pilgrims, is believed to date back to the 16th century, though some traditions suggest an even earlier origin. According to legend, the statue was modeled after a vision experienced by a Spanish monk. The figure itself is thought to have a wooden core covered with cloth and wax.
Albert Kubiลกta, chairman of the Topographical Commission, underlined the siteโs significance. โThe commission accepted the name kindly because it represents an important landmark for the Lesser Town area,โ he said. He also noted the statueโs particular draw for visitors from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal.
