Prague’s Hradčanská metro station will close for at least ten months beginning in late 2025 due to a major reconstruction project.

During this period, trains on Line A will bypass the station without stopping, significantly affecting public transport in one of the capital’s busiest areas. The closure was announced by the Prague 6 city district, which confirmed that the work will last until mid-2026.

The reconstruction will focus on replacing outdated infrastructure that has been in service for nearly three decades. All escalators, which have operated for 28 years, will be completely replaced.

In addition, the station’s platforms, main vestibule, and exits will be renovated. A full upgrade of the station’s technical systems, including cabling, pipelines, ventilation, and heating, is also planned. Lighting throughout the station will switch entirely to LED technology to improve energy efficiency and visibility.

Architectural preservation is also a key part of the project. The marble wall coverings and aluminum relief panels, originally installed when the station opened in 1978, will be dismantled and cleaned. Those in poor condition will be substituted with faithful replicas to maintain the original appearance of the station.

To allow better visibility of the station’s historic design, some shops currently located in the vestibule will be removed.

However, a point of concern remains. Despite the scale of the overhaul, the current design does not include the installation of elevators, leaving the station one of fourteen in the Prague metro system without barrier-free access. Officials from Prague 6 have voiced their dissatisfaction and are calling for elevators to be added during the closure.

Adding lifts would require complex coordination with the upcoming Prague–Airport–Kladno railway project and a planned transport terminal at Hradčanská Street.

The exact start date of the reconstruction will be announced once building permits are granted. Until then, DPP and Prague 6 continue to prepare the necessary project documentation and engineering plans, with Metroprojekt in charge of design.
