Prague Moves Forward With Plan to Name Square After Karel Gott
Prague Morning
Prague may soon honor legendary singer Karel Gott with a public square named after him in the city’s Smíchov district.
A small space near the villa where he lived for decades is being considered for the name “Náměstíčko Karela Gotta”, or Karel Gott Square.
The Prague 5 municipal council has expressed support for the renaming. The square is located at the intersection of U Mrázovky, U Blaženky, and Nad Bertramkou streets, just steps from the late singer’s longtime home.
The proposal now heads to Prague City Hall’s Topographic Commission for further review.
The idea came from Ivana Gottová, the singer’s widow, and is tied to the ongoing Villa Gott museum project, which is turning the family’s home into a cultural site dedicated to Gott’s life and career. The commission has already given the new name preliminary approval, according to officials.
“Karel Gott wasn’t just a brilliant performer—he was a cultural icon who helped shape the identity of this country,” said Lukáš Herold (ODS), mayor of Prague 5. “He lived in our district for more than forty years, and it’s only right that we commemorate him in a dignified and lasting way.”
Herold described the initiative as a “sensitive and meaningful” gesture to preserve the singer’s legacy. He emphasized that the move wouldn’t alter existing street names and would respect the historical, linguistic, and local context of the area.
The square’s renaming is just part of a broader plan. The municipality and the Villa Gott project’s private investor are discussing architectural upgrades to the public space to better reflect its cultural significance.
These improvements aim to enhance both the aesthetics and accessibility of the area for visitors once the museum opens.
Karel Gott, often referred to as the “Sinatra of the East,” was one of the most influential figures in Czech popular music. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 80.
