Medieval Monastic Brewery Reopens at Augustine Hotel

Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel located in Prague’s Lesser Town district recently reopened its St. Thomas Brewery Bar for public, adding one sidewalk entrance to the venue for easier navigation of its guests.

The cellar housing this famous bar dating back to 1352 is now open not only for the guests yearning for extraordinary experience and pint of the dark St. Thomas lager, but also for private groups.

Rentals of the St. Thomas Brewery Bar are possible based on the availability for up to 55 guests with pricing tailor-made to each event organizer’s requirements.

Apart from the original beer brewed here since the 14th century, the Bar, designed as an artificial grotto with stylish cubistic furniture, offers traditional Czech dishes and is currently one of the richest historical landmarks of the Augustine Hotel Prague.

In the 16th century, during the reign of the well-known emperor Rudolf II, the local brewery became an exclusive supplier of beer to the Prague Castle. The chronicles say that “when Czech kings were at the Prague Castle, they would only drink St. Thomas beer!“.

Nowadays, the local award-winning Matuška micro-brewery produces both draught and bottled St. Thomas beer uniquely for Augustine Hotel.

The hotel’s owners obtained the recipe in 2009 when the Augustinian monks agreed to rent a part of the St. Thomas Monastery and connect it with a hotel complex in exchange for renovation of their church.

The hotel has been created from a set of seven buildings, many of which have historical significance, and are interconnected with a part of the monastery that is still inhabited by four Augustinian monks.

There’s also the St. Thomas Church and a unique 13th-century library, which can be visited on special guided tours.
