A new app called Prague Castle Archaeology will guide visitors through five significant areas of Prague Castle, including its hidden underground sections that are usually inaccessible to the public.
The app provides detailed historical insights and showcases how these spaces have evolved over the centuries.
Beneath the reinforced concrete structures of Prague Castle lie the remains of buildings dating back to the ninth and tenth centuries, extending over several thousand square meters.
Many visitors are unaware of these ancient structures, but the new app changes that by offering a virtual tour of these hidden gems.
The app highlights five key archaeological sites: the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, the Third Courtyard’s Great and Small Excavations, the crypt of St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Monastery and Basilica of St. George.
Users can explore these sites in detail using 3D scans and a timeline feature that illustrates the changes and research history of these buildings.
Experts from the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Department of Historic Preservation of the Office of the President of the Republic, spent four years developing this application.
It serves as a guide for visitors to Prague Castle and can also be used anywhere outside the premises.
The app is available for free download on major platforms and supports Czech, English, and German languages.
