Prague is commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Czech Republic’s accession to the European Union with a rich program of events and exhibitions.
A outdoor exhibition titled “20 Years in the EU” opened yesterday on Mariánské námÄ›stÃ, showcasing key milestones in the Czech Republic’s EU journey and highlighting the benefits membership has brought to Prague specifically.
The capital has already received 681.3 million euros in EU funds, making it the fourth richest region in the EU. The exhibition also features successful projects in Prague that were significantly supported by EU funds.
The exhibition is presented in both Czech and English and is open to the public until May 31st.
Adding to the festivities, parades with 28 flag bearers accompanied by music will take place today, May 1st, at approximately 2:30 p.m., crossing the city center.
The New Town Hall and PetÅ™Ãn Lookout Tower will be illuminated in the “European” blue color on specific dates, while Prague trams will be adorned with flags throughout the celebrations.
Throughout May, various concerts, theater performances, and exhibitions will commemorate key figures and events related to the Czech Republic’s EU entry. The traditional United Islands of Prague 2024 festival, held on May 1st in the city center, will also focus on this significant anniversary.
“Prague is not only a recipient of EU funds for construction and urban infrastructure development, but we also see the Union as a community of countries sharing values like democracy, freedom, and human rights,” stated Adam Zábranský, Councilor for Property, Transparency, and Infrastructure. “Our membership allows the Czech voice to be heard more strongly against extremism and authoritarianism.”
Deputy Minister for European Affairs Tomáš Dub expressed his gratitude for the exhibition and invited everyone to the “Experience Europe” music festival on May 1st at Strelecky Island, sponsored by Minister for European Affairs Martin Dvořák.
