Prague Hosts Major Chess Duel Between Gürel and Navara

Prague Morning

The ČEZ Chess Trophy 2025 is bringing one of the most anticipated chess events of the year to the Czech capital.

On June 26 and 27, Turkish prodigy Ediz Gürel, currently the world’s number one under-18 player, will face Czech grandmaster David Navara in an eight-game rapid match.

The duel will take place at the Gregor Hall of the Municipal House, right in the center of Prague.

Chess fans can attend both days of the event in person, with games scheduled from 3 p.m. to approximately 7 p.m. Tickets will be available directly at the venue.

For those unable to attend, live online commentary will be provided on praguechess.cz and ČT Sport Plus, featuring analysis by grandmaster Sergej Movsesjan and master Lukáš Vlasák.

Beyond the headline match, the festival offers several additional attractions for chess enthusiasts. Visitors to the Municipal House will be able to explore a special exhibition of chess-themed paintings by old masters—a rare opportunity, as many of these works are not part of public collections.

There will also be a chance to purchase hard-to-find chess books that aren’t usually stocked in Czech bookstores.

Adding to the festival’s program, both grandmasters will participate in a simultaneous exhibition match on June 28, playing against 25 opponents at once.

This event will take place from 3 p.m. at the Rudolf Foundry, located near the Vikárka restaurant at Prague Castle, offering a unique backdrop for this public spectacle.
