Prague Has Chosen Its 2025 Christmas Tree for Old Town Square

Prague Morning

Prague has officially chosen its Christmas tree for 2025. A spruce from Jiřetín pod Jedlovou will illuminate the Old Town Square, marking the start of the city’s holiday season.

City councillor Michal Hroza (TOP 09), responsible for infrastructure, revealed the choice on social media.

“We’ve decided! This year, a spruce from Jiřetín pod Jedlovou will shine on the Old Town Square,” Hroza announced on Facebook, sharing a photo of the tree standing proudly beside a traditional wooden cabin.

The spruce, which measures over 26 meters, will be shortened to around 23 meters before its journey to Prague. “It’s more than half a century old and about 11 meters wide — truly a forest giant,” Hroza wrote.

However, the tree wasn’t chosen solely for festive reasons. According to the councillor, it was already due to be removed because it posed a risk to nearby buildings. “The spruce had to be cut down anyway because it threatened the owner’s historic timbered cottage,” he explained.

Thanks to the city’s decision, the tree will get a second life as a centerpiece of Prague’s Christmas celebrations. “It’s wonderful that this spruce can bring joy to all residents and visitors who come to see the Christmas markets this year,” Hroza added.

The lighting ceremony on the Old Town Square is traditionally one of the most attended events of the Prague winter season, drawing thousands of locals and tourists every year.
