Prague City Prepares Special Event to Showcase Wenceslas Square’s Transformation
On Thursday, October 10, 2024, the City of Prague will host a special public event to unveil the ongoing reconstruction of Wenceslas Square, including the return of trams to the historic space.
The event will take place in the newly refurbished lower part of the square and will feature experts involved in the project, offering a deep dive into the future of this iconic location.
The program promises to be both informative and engaging, with a mix of discussions, exhibitions, and even musical performances. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the history of Wenceslas Square through archival footage and photographs, alongside modern visualizations of its new design, created by Jakub Cigler Architekti.
Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček, who oversees territorial and strategic development, highlighted the improvements brought by the reconstruction: “The refurbishment of the lower part of Wenceslas Square has already created a high-quality public space that both locals and tourists enjoy. I believe the upper half, enhanced by the new tram line, will bring even more convenience to getting around the city center and surrounding districts.”
Return of Trams after 40 Years
This summer, Prague began the long-awaited overhaul of the upper half of Wenceslas Square, which includes the construction of a new tram line. Trams will return to this part of the square for the first time in over 40 years, marking a symbolic yet significant milestone for the city.
While many support the square’s revitalization, opinions on the return of trams are mixed, with some residents expressing concerns or uncertainty about the project’s impact.
In response, Prague is hosting the NEW VÁCLAVÁK event, an initiative designed to inform the public about the square’s reconstruction and address any lingering questions. The event will take place from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
Exhibitions, Discussions, and More
One of the event’s key attractions is a panel exhibition titled Václavák, trams?!, curated by historian and architect Ondřej Šefc. The exhibition will open at 4:45 PM and remain on display for 14 days.
An essential part of the event will be a detailed timetable of the reconstruction, providing clear information about the phases of the tram line construction and what residents can expect moving forward.
For those who cannot attend the event in person, an online version of the exhibition will be available. Attendees can scan QR codes at the event to access videos and presentations on their smartphones, allowing them to explore the square’s transformation from anywhere.
