Prague Invests 139 Million CZK in Public Lighting and EV Charging Network

The City of Prague is allocating more than 139 million CZK this year to modernize public lighting and expand the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
The Prague City Council approved the investment at a meeting on Monday, with the funds going toward the renewal of lighting systems and the installation of EV-ready street lamps (EVR), supporting the city’s push for sustainable mobility.
These specially designed street lamps will allow for the future installation of electric vehicle charging stations without additional costly infrastructure upgrades.
“The modernization of public lighting is an opportunity to combine safety, cost savings, and future-readiness. This year alone, we are investing over 139 million CZK into 300 poles, luminaires, and 140 EVR lamps to facilitate the expansion of charging infrastructure. Each step brings us closer to a more modern and sustainable Prague,” said Michal Hroza, Prague’s councilor responsible for infrastructure.
According to the General Development Plan for Charging Infrastructure, approved in February 2021, the city anticipates 180,000 electric vehicles on Prague’s streets by 2030.
To meet demand, Prague will require approximately 4,500 charging stations, prompting the city to steadily increase its charging capacity along key routes.
Smart Use of Public Infrastructure
A key part of Prague’s strategy is to integrate charging capabilities into public lighting poles, leveraging the existing electricity distribution network. As part of ongoing cable infrastructure upgrades, power will be supplied directly to streetlight poles, enabling their conversion into charging points with minimal additional investment.
This approach reduces costs and shortens installation time, ensuring that as more electric vehicles hit the roads, Prague’s infrastructure will be ready to accommodate them. The EVR lamps will be fitted with charging points in the future without major financial or technological obstacles.
In 2024, Prague installed of 143 EVR lamps, 447 new poles, and 1,016 luminaires.
