The Czech capital is set for a major transport upgrade with five new underground railway stations, a double-decker hub, and a 10.6-kilometer tunnel system, aiming to enhance public and suburban transit.
The Railway Administration has unveiled plans for a transformative railway project in Prague, with the construction the construction of a two-level underground train station beneath the main railway station, with additional underground stops at Wenceslas Square, Karlovo namesti, Karlรญn, and Florenc.
The project, estimated to cost 185 billion CZK, is expected to be completed by 2047. The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Transport, Pragueโs city administration, and the Central Bohemian Region, targeting improved connectivity for long-distance and suburban trains while easing the burden on the cityโs public transport system.
The centerpiece of the plan is a double-decker station beneath the main railway hub, complemented by four additional underground stops: Karlรญn, Florenc, Wenceslas Square, and Karlovo namesti.
Each tunnel in the 10.6-kilometer system will handle up to 16 trains per hour in both directions, ensuring efficient movement through the city. These new lines will connect the busiest parts of Prague, reducing congestion and providing faster transit options for commuters and visitors alike.
Station Details and Timeline
The central station hub, located beneath the main railway station, will serve as the intersection of the new routes. Its two levels will be constructed at depths of 40 meters and 15 to 20 meters, offering a seamless transition between long-distance and suburban services.
The Wenceslas Square and Karlovo namesti stations will align with the depths of existing metro lines, making transfers convenient for passengers. The Wenceslas Square stop will be situated at the squareโs center, while the Karlovo namesti station will be located near the Center for Architecture and Urban Planning.
The project is set to be included in Pragueโs strategic transport plans, with preparation beginning immediately.
Construction is scheduled to commence in 2035, with completion expected in 2047.
