Gunfire Near Elementary School in Jablonec Region: Two Victims, One Hurt
Prague Morning
Two people were killed and one seriously injured in a shooting on Thursday afternoon in the town of Smržovka, located in the Jablonec nad Nisou region of northern Czechia.
Police have confirmed that the suspect was detained shortly after the incident and that there is no further threat to the public.
According to police reports, the shooting took place near a local elementary school, though investigators say the incident was not connected to the school or its students.
Officers immediately secured the area and instructed nearby residents to stay indoors as precautionary measures were put in place.
Police spokesperson Klára Jeníčková told Czech media that the timing and location appeared to be coincidental. “It seems the shooting happened close to the school by chance. There is no indication that the building or anyone inside was targeted,” she said about an hour after the first emergency call.
Law enforcement deployed multiple patrols to the scene, including armed response units equipped with ballistic protection, to ensure the situation was contained.
Emergency services were also dispatched, including paramedics and an air rescue helicopter, according to Michael Georgiev, spokesperson for the regional rescue service.
He declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing police investigation. Firefighters were also present to assist the emergency teams.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved or the possible motive behind the shooting. Police said they are continuing to question witnesses and gather evidence at the scene.
