The Czech government has declared a state of emergency in response to the coronavirus epidemic.

Events and services

Restaurants, cafes, and other hospitality/catering venues will be permitted to open between 6am and 8pm only, from March 13th. It is banned to go to restaurants and bars between 8 pm to 6 am.

Refreshments at shopping malls will be banned altogether.

Gyms, swimming pools, and other sports facilities, clubs, galleries, and libraries will also be closed as well as eateries in shopping malls.

“We are also banning theatre, music, film and other performances, sports, cultural, religious, community, dancing, traditional events and other meetings,” Prime Minister Andrej Babis said.

Anyone organizing weddings during this period are asked to keep the number of attendees to maximum 30, though funerals may be attended by up to 100 people. The ban does not affect the operation of shops, public transport, or courts and other public authorities.

The ban on gatherings does not apply to companies, said Interior Minister Jan Hamacek.

Transport and travel

No entry for foreigners to the Czech Republic from risk countries (from Friday at 23:59): the government has banned foreigners from 18 risk countries (as of 16:00 on Thursday, March 12) to enter the Czech Republic areas, this include Austria, Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iran, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA.

The only exception is foreigners with temporary residence in the Czech Republic and foreigners with permanent residence (NOT student visas or long term residence permits). This list may be updated in the future, as the government updates their own list.

Foreigners from high-risk countries will be banned from entering the country and Czech nationals will be prohibited from travelling to high-risk destinations.

Exceptions for entry to the country will be allowed for several professions, such as truck drivers, to ensure that the supply chain will not be interrupted.

No entry to risk areas (from Friday 23:59): the government simultaneously banned Czech citizens and foreigners with temporary or permanent residence in Czech Republic to travel to risk areas, specifically Germany and Austria. The only exception are people who commute to work across the borders.

Czech Railways will cancel international transport from Friday midnight. Until Friday it is possible to use buses or trains, but from Saturday midnight only cars will be allowed to enter the country. “All Czech citizens abroad will be allowed to return,” said Hamáček.

In addition, the Czech police are now being deployed to check whether people who have been ordered into quarantine are staying indoors.

The Czech Republic has 116 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus on Thursday afternoon, with no deaths.

The state of emergency will last 30 days.

What is COVID-19

Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causes COVID-19 disease. According to currently available information, its incubation is up to 14 days (average of 5 to 6 days). It is transmitted especially in contact with infected people. The main symptoms are fever above 38°C, dry cough and shortness of breath. Please find more information at www.who.int.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says up to 70 percent of the population could eventually become infected by coronavirus, and proposed how to deal with the crisis’ impact on society and the economy.

“The virus has arrived in Europe, it’s there, we must all understand that. According to experts, 60 to 70 percent of the population could be infected if this remains the case,” said Merkel.

Germany has pledged €1 billion to fight COVID-19 virus, the whole of Italy is on lockdown and coronavirus cases have been confirmed in every EU member state.

Germany has so far reported 1,565 cases of the virus and three deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University, and the chancellor has come under fire for her government’s handling of the response.

“I don’t want to comment on the situation in Germany, although I believe that such statements rather cause panic. In any case, we have adopted strong measures for such worst-case scenarios to be out of the question,” as reported by iDNES.

At 2 pm on Wednesday, the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the Czech Republic had reached 67.

More than 121,000 cases and 4,368 deaths have now been confirmed around the world.

As the virus continues to spread across the country, schools are closing their doors in an effort to protect their students.

The new measures will close schools and universities, but not kindergartens, from Wednesday. “We may decide on additional emergency measures later on Tuesday. It is necessary to take active, exceptional measures at the start of an epidemic,” announced Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.

Forty people in the Czech Republic have been infected with the new coronavirus, so far.

From March 10th at 18:00, cultural and sporting events with more than 100 people have been banned.

The Ministry of Health confirmed two new coronavirus disease cases on Tuesday, which brings the total number of those infected to 40.

“The national specialized laboratory on Tuesday confirmed two new positive test results for coronavirus. In the first case, it was a 61-year-old woman who was in contact with a colleague who contracted COVID-19 after returning from Italy. In the second case, it is a 54-year-old man who was on holiday in Italy. Other than that, for the first time, a coronavirus case was detected in a person who had nothing to do with the countries where COVID-19 is widely spread. He is a Prague taxi driver. In total, 40 people are being treated in hospitals or at home,” Health Minister Adam Vojtech wrote on Twitter.

“We understand this will be very unpleasant for people, but we want to prevent, by all means, what happened in Italy from happening here,” added PM Babis.

The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the Czech Republic has risen to 38 from 32 on Sunday, according to official figures.

This was announced on Monday evening by Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch (ANO).

Among them a Prague taxi driver, who may be a source of community-borne infection, a serious development. “At the moment, it is very difficult to trace people who the man was in contact with,” said Roman Prymula – Professor of Preventive Medicine at School of Medicine, Charles University – to Czech Television. “Stricter measures can now be required,” he added.

For preventive reasons, some Prague universities are closing their classrooms and canceling lessons. CTU decided to interrupt its lessons for two weeks.

“We have three new cases reported. One from the Zlin region is a 41-years-old woman who was on vacation in Trentino, Italy,” said Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch on Twitter.

“She went skiing with her family. She came back on March 7th. We had her tested and today the results were positive,” said Eva Sedláčková, Director of the Regional Hygiene Station in Zlín.

“The other two cases are two men who are close contacts of an existing case. They are currently in isolation at home,” he added.

Prague’s Public Health Authority has opened two hotlines specifically for coronavirus-related questions, at 773 782 856 and 773 782 850.

The Czech National Institute of Public Health can also be reached at 724 810 106 and 725 191 367 from 8:00 to 21:00.

Italy is extending its coronavirus quarantine measures, which include a ban on public gatherings, to the entire country.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that people would only be permitted to travel for work or family emergencies. He said the measures, which come into effect on Tuesday, were to defend the most fragile members of society.

Italy’s coronavirus death toll jumped on Monday by 97 to 463. It is the worst-hit country after China.

The number of confirmed infections also increased to 9,172, up from 7,375 on Sunday, official figures show.

Czech government decides to suspend flights to and from Italy (Milan, Venice, Bergamo and Bologna) and South Korea amid coronavirus outbreak (2019-nCoV).

This was announced by PM Andrej Babiš after the meeting with the State Security Council.

The Czech Republic is negotiating this step with the European Commission and expects to limit flights from and to Italy for 14 days.

Moreover, the upcoming Biathlon World Cup in Nové Město na Moravě, where up to 100,000 people are expected, will take place without an audience.

The Prime Minister stressed that anyone who has been in high-risk locations and has coronavirus-like symptoms should report their symptom by phone rather than seeking medical attention at clinics or hospitals.

Yesterday, the Czech health minister confirmed the first three cases of coronavirus infection in the country.

It is not yet clear how many other people that the three came into contact with will be quarantined. None of the patients are reported to be in serious condition.

In the Czech Republic, three people are infected with the new coronavirus. Two are located in Na Bulovce Hospital in Prague, one in Ústí nad Labem.

A fourth person, a woman, is still undergoing tests.

The Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch (ANO) confirmed this to CT24 in a press briefing.

“We ask everyone to very seriously consider not traveling to those (affected) regions for holiday or ski trips unless necessary, because the danger exists,” Vojtech told a televised news briefing.

All patients are isolated in infectious wards. According to the minister, the course of the disease is not serious.

The first case at hospital Na Bulovce is a Czech man, born in 1952, who stayed at the Italian University in Udine, where he attended a conference.

The second registered case is a woman from the United States of America, born in 1999, studying in Milan.

“She arrived in Prague as a tourist. Later, her condition deteriorated, and she was first examined in Motol. She was treated as potentially infectious, all medical staff had protective equipment, so the risk of infection in the hospital was minimized. Afterward, she was moved from Motol to Na Bulovce Hospital,” added the Minister.

The third one is in Masaryk Hospital in Usti nad Labem, is a Czech man, born in 1976, who was on a ski holiday in Italy in the northern part of Veneto region.

It is not yet clear how many other people that the three came into contact with will be quarantined. None of the patients are reported to be in serious condition.

Vojtěch added that these are individual cases. Thus, the Czech Republic will not take any quarantine measures due to these first three cases.
