An outbreak of coronavirus linked to a music club in Prague has increased to 109 cases, public health officials have said.

Czech authorities suspect one woman with no symptoms was the source of the infection at a birthday party on 11 July at the Techtle Mechtle club.

Media reports that some of the club’s customers became infected by sharing a drink with one straw.

Public health officials have reimposed restrictions on public activities in some areas, including the industrial north-eastern region that is home to 10% of the country’s 10.7 million people.

The Czech Republic has reported 365 deaths from the disease caused by the coronavirus, a fraction of the toll in more severely hit west European nations.

New restrictions

From Saturday, July 25 at midnight, it will be mandatory to wear face masks at indoor public gatherings with over 100 people, including nightclubs. The Health Minister Adam Vojtěch (ANO) informed Czech Television today afternoon. This measure does not concern shops or restaurants, but specifically sports and cultural events.

A maximum of 500 people seated in five separate sectors, each comprising 100 people, will be allowed at indoor events.

From Monday, July 27, the public will be required also to wear a face mask in GP surgeries and pharmacies, “where it is not always possible to maintain a two-meter distance from other people”, the Czech government said in an update on its website.
