Sunday was the warmest day ever recorded at Prague’s Klementinum, the oldest Czech monitoring station. The temperature reached 37.9 degrees Celsius, the highest since measurements began in 1775.
The previous record for the 30th of June at Klementinum was 35.7 degrees, set in 1950.
For June as a whole, the average national temperature was 20.7C, which was the warmest since 1961 when forecasters began monitoring monthly averages.
Across Europe, several other records were set as well, with a town in southern France reporting a new national high of 45.9 C on June 28.
Last week much of Europe sweltered in an early summer blast of scorching temperatures, as scientists warn that global warming linked to human fossil fuel use could make such heatwaves more frequent.

For the second year running, Hong Kong has topped the league, emerging as the most expensive city for overseas workers, according to Mercer’s 2019 Global Talent Trends report
Other Asian cities are not far behind, with the continent claiming eight of the top 10 places in the table. Once again Tokyo comes second in the human resources consulting firm’s list, while Singapore has shifted up a rank to poach the third spot from Zurich.
Seoul has also moved up a spot, now ranking fourth, with Zurich right behind. The only other non-Asian city in the top 10 is New York, which has risen to ninth place this year from 13th in 2018.
China is not immune to the high cost of living, with Shanghai snatching sixth place (from up seventh last year), Beijing at eight (it was ninth in 2018) and the southern city of Shenzhen moving up two places to the 10th spot.
A surprise entry to the top 10 is Ashgabat in Turkmenistan, which saw a massive rise from 43 last year to seventh this year. The consulting company didn’t give a reason for Ashgabat’s surge, but the International Monetary Fund forecasts Turkmen consumer price inflation to hit 9% in 2019.
At the other end of the table, the cheapest cities are the Tunisian capital, Tunis (209), Tashkent in Uzbekistan (208) and Karachi in Pakistan (207).
Various factors, including currency fluctuations, cost of inflation for goods and services and accommodation prices, contribute to the cost of expatriate packages for employees on international assignments, Mercer said.
“Cost of living is an important component of a city’s attractiveness for businesses,” said Yvonne Traber, Mercer’s global mobility product solutions leader. “Decision makers increasingly acknowledge that globalization is challenging cities to inform, innovate, and compete to foster the kind of satisfaction that attracts both people and investment — the keys to a city’s future.”
2019 cost of living city ranking
1. Hong Kong (China)
2. Tokyo (Japan)
3. Singapore
4. Seoul (South Korea)
5. Zurich (Switzerland)
6. Shanghai (China)
7. Ashgabat (Turkmenistan)
8. Beijing (China)
9. New York City (USA)
10. Shenzhen (China)
On June 27th, Bistro Sisters (part of Together Group) reopened its doors at Dlouhá street.
This little shop serves up modern takes on chlebičky (small open-faced sandwiches), the “treasure” of the Czech gastronomy. It’s popular for its creative versions of the classic snack, all made using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients from a small farm about 30km from Prague.
Vegans, vegetarians, and meat lovers could find their favorite among the variety. Classic chlebíčky could also be found with egg, goat cheese with beets. However, the bistro also provides distinctive sandwiches with duck and cabbage or pork with cabbage. At this instance, Hawaii Poke is the potential best-seller, made with a special recipe including avocado, mango, cucumber, seaweed, and wasabi.
One of bistro’s main objectives is to keep the Czech tradition alive. “When making sandwiches, I often kept Czech classics in terms of raw materials, but their adjustment and texture is quite different than what Czechs are used to. For example, cucumber is a jelly in the case of ham sandwiches, the egg is dried in salt, and diced ham is spread over the whole bread length,” says chef Vladimír Čech.
The individual recipes and ingredients are prepared in cooperation with some of the top chefs of the Together.
Chlebíčky are very prominent in the country. However, it is because of its convenience and availability. What can grab your attention is that you will certainly see people with chlebíčky in their hands. Almost every street in Prague has a place with those classics.
Chlebíčky are beautifully served, though very simple ingredients are used. That probably connects to their history. Jan Paukert, a Czech chef wanted to create something easy and lovely for starters besides canapes. Thus, in 1916 represented the first chlebíček, which was a slice of white bread with potato salad, a slice of Prague ham, Emmental cheese, Hungarian salami, a piece of boiled egg, and a slice of tomato.
Notwithstanding, the changing of the season would also enhance the diversity of Sisters’ menu. The cooking process can be seen by customers because the kitchen is open in front of them. “We want to avoid a situation where the customers eat ham in one bite and then eat just bread and butter,” says the new owner David Petřík.
Bistro Sisters is open from Monday to Friday (8:00–20:00); on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00.
Bistro Sisters was founded in 2014 by Hana Michopulu, food writer and former editor-in-chief of the Apetit magazine. She is one of the most visible and popular personalities on the culinary scene in Prague.

The Bohemia Jazz Fest, which Downbeat magazine lists as one of the world’s most important cultural events, was founded in 2005 by acclaimed jazz guitarist Rudy Linka.
Thanks to its sponsors and patrons, the Bohemia Jazz Fest has become a summer ritual with jazz fans from all over Central Europe gathering on the squares of historic Czech cities to see and hear the world’s greatest jazz performers. In addition to jazz, there will also be a thrilling blend of blues, funk and world music.
The headliner in Prague will be Wolfgang Muthspiel Quintet, Stefano Bollani Napoli Trip, and Tuck & Patti.
The guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, born in 1965, lives in Vienna and is considered to be one of the most influential guitarists of his generation. From the mid-90s, he lived and worked in the Jazz capital, New York. During this time, he daringly took sensitive excursions into the world of pop music with Rebekka Bakken, while pursuing the electronic project Muthspiel/Muthspiel with his brother.
Jazz pianist Stefano Bollani began playing piano as a child in order to accompany his singing but soon concentrated solely on the instrument, enrolling in a conservatory in Florence when he was 11. There, he studied both jazz and pop music, and after graduating in 1993, added his keyboard skills to albums for many of Italy’s top pop stars, including Laura Pausini, Irene Grandi, and Jovanotti.
Tuck & Patti are an American jazz duo consisting of guitarist William Charles “Tuck” Andress and singer Patricia “Patti” Cathcart Andress.
By 2010 Bohemia Jazz Fest was drawing more than 70,000 jazz fans to historic town squares throughout the country, making a significant economic impact.
All the concerts are open-air, featuring headline performers playing in spectacular medieval settings. And they’re all free.

The National Gallery Prague (NGP) opened a large exhibition French Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Ordrupgaard Collection with 60 works including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro on June 29 in the Kinsky Palace.
The display will show also artistic overlaps with other artistic tendencies. Romantic painting will be represented by Eugène Delacroix and the realistic method by Gustave Courbet or the artists of the so-called Barbizon school, such as Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny. The outstanding works from the collection of sixty paintings will also include chef d’oeuvres by post-Impressionists Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin.
Since autumn 2017, Ordrupgaard’s unique collection of French art has been touring outside the borders of Denmark. The museum is closed, and the French masterpieces have therefore been available for loan to a large number of prominent museums abroad.

Have you ever think about having dinner in a galactic spaceship? You don’t need to become cosmonaut or travel to NASA museum. You can just visit a newly open Cyberdog in Prague. I can’t promise you the zero-gravity experience, but robotic hand Kuka who is serving drinks here is a great companion to your futuristic discovery.
Futuristic Design
Cyberdog is a two-floor building made from the material of a spaceship that might evoke you the shape of a dog. Inside of this creature is a futuristic wine bar and restaurant that is served by a robotic hand Kuka. The interior evokes sci-fi movies, with its perfectly simple design, galactic music and lightening completing your futuristic experience.
This is the only project of its kind in Europe where customers are served by a robot with complete automatization from the order and serving to the payment. But no worries, humans are still present here. If you feel uncomfortable with the menu on a tablet or cashless payment, there is always somebody with a warm smile that will help you to enjoy this experience.
The authors, architect Tomáš Císař and artist David Černý, included many interesting details. You might know the controversial art of David Černý from my previous article on Trifot, and he did his job in Cyberdog as well. On first sight, you can see a polished and clean design of the spaceship. On the second look, you will find human eyes, hair on the staircase and another part of the bodies that you should better discover by yourself.
Robotic Hand Kuka to Your Service
The whole service in Cyberdog is almost a “one-man” show of Kuka. Kuka is a robotic hand that prepares your glasses of wine. He carefully chose the wine you order, with smooth moves open the bottle and pour exactly 0,125 l to your glass. When your glass is ready, Kuka places it carefully to galactic trolleys that distribute drinks and refreshment to your table. When Kuka is not busy with the orders, he is showing off his “moves like Jagger” and like to be video recorded dancing like this.
Cyberdog Galactic Menu
You can order a menu via application in your smartphone or via local tablets. The main highlights are wines Dog in Dock served by Kuka. You can also have a galactic Cyberdog menu. I found the most interesting one the pannacotta dessert served in three different tubes that you mix by yourself and the water in special plastic glasses. However, if you are a gourmand and you prefer having “proper” food, there is a nice variety prepared in nearby Trifot Restaurant and served in Cyberdog.
Cultural Experience
Cyberdog has a large screen in its “face of a dog” on the second floor that is used for various projections. The great news is that since April, we can even enjoy a summer cinema in front of Cyberdog. It means the whole area around Trifot and its restaurant will become a seating area for our next summer evenings.
How to get to Cyberdog:
The easiest way is to take a yellow line of metro until Nové Butovice. Find a pedestrian avenue leading under the highway and walk until you see Trifot from a distance. Just next to Trifot, you will find a smaller brother Cyberdog.

When Unibail-Rodamco acquired Westfield last year, one of its aims was to leverage the hallowed Westfield mall brand among its European Holdings. Today, the combined Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield named the first 10 Westfields on the continent.
Seven of them are in France: Westfield Les Quatre Temps; Westfield Forum des Halles; Westfield Vélizy 2; Westfield Parly 2; Westfield Carré Sénart, Westfield Rosny 2 in the Paris region, and Westfield Euralille in Lille.
Poland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic will host the remaining three: Westfield Arkadia in Warsaw, Westfield Mall of Scandinavia in Stockholm, and Westfield Chodov in Prague.
The shopping center in Chodov underwent an extensive reconstruction two years ago and is currently the largest one in Prague with 300 shops. It opened on November 9, 2005.
“As the only global brand in the industry, the introduction of Westfield will enhance the value and positioning of our destinations across Continental Europe [and provide] an international platform for retailers to enter new markets,” said URW group CEO Christophe Cuvillier in a press release announcing the locations.
A marketing and advertising campaign employing cinema, TV, print, and social media will support the introduction of the Westfield brand in all four countries where it’s being introduced.
Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield is currently focusing on the construction of a brand new shopping center above Vltavská metro station in Holešovice.

Proposals to re-erect a Baroque column with a Marian statue in Old Town Square has led to a religious controversy.
A group of Catholics and Prague history enthusiasts hope to erect in the city’s central Old Town Square a replica of the original column built in the 1650s and torn down in 1918.
Its height reached almost 14 m and on the top, there was a two meters high golden-plated statue of Virgin Mary, in the corners of the stone railings there were four groups of angels fighting with evil forces.
The column was viewed as a symbol of the Habsburg empire. It was erected to commemorated Prague’s defenders against the Protestant Swedish army at the end of the Thirty Years War of 1618-1648.
The Marian Column was also very important for time determination because its shadow was showing the high noon during its fall over the Prague Meridian.
In the past, similar plans to re-erect the column were stopped under both Nazi and Communist rule when many Czechs turned away from the Catholic Church.
In 1989 — shortly after the fall of Communism — local Catholics and history enthusiasts set up the “Association for the Renewal of the Marian Column.”
Archbishop Dominik Duka of Prague has spoken in favor of the project but has done so only privately “as a Catholic and a citizen.” The archdiocese has not taken an official position.
However, the association has found itself caught in a bureaucratic tangle. It possesses a building permit — scheduled to expire in July — but not permission for construction to begin at a specific site.
Hence, the association’s members have twice thwarted from digging up the square’s paving stones by municipal police.
The remains of the Marian Column are nowadays placed in the Lapidarium of the National Museum in Výstaviště.

Jakub originally comes from Martin (Northern Slovakia). He studied film editing and sound engineering. Back in his home country, he was running summer cinemas and a music club.
Recently, he moved to Prague as an opportunity came up in the shape of a 70m long boat, which wasn’t being used much at the time. The idea was to open an 80-seat cinema on it with a friendly atmosphere for film lovers to share their passion and hang out.
As a Slovak, he feels at home in Prague. Not only are the languages very similar and people understand each other mutually, but he also loves the fact that everything can be found in Prague. From quiet places and historical sites to busy places and modern sites, but the thing he finds the most important, are the wonderful people from all around the world that you can come across in Prague.
Go and meet Jakub on his boat. Enjoy a great mixture of alternative movies and selected blockbusters either on board or even outside the boat.

The concept of “overtourism” has gained so much traction over the last few years, it was even named as one of the Oxford Dictionary’s 2018 Words of the Year.
Now, 20 more cities are on alert lest they turn into the future face of the problem, according to a new report from the World Travel & Tourism Council and commercial real estate firm JLL.
The report, called “Destination 2030,” examines the tourism “readiness” of 50 destinations around the world and groups cities into five types. The “emerging performers” category includes destinations where infrastructure and tourism momentum are growing along with the pressures associated with more tourists. Those cities were Bangkok; Cape Town, South Africa; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Istanbul; Jakarta, Indonesia; Mexico City; and New Delhi.
Another 13 cities — called “mature performers” — were described as having an established tourism infrastructure, strong leisure or business travel, and good positioning to manage current growth levels. “But there is a risk of future strains related to visit volume, infrastructure or activity that is testing readiness for additional growth,” the report said. It listed Auckland, New Zealand; Berlin; Dublin; Las Vegas; Lisbon; London; Los Angeles; Madrid; Miami; New York; Seoul; Seville; and Sydney in this category.
Some of the names most synonymous with crowds fell into the “managing momentum” type: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, Prague, Rome, San Francisco, Stockholm and the Canadian cities of Toronto and Vancouver, B.C. Those are described in the report as having established tourism infrastructure and urban readiness but heavy leisure travel volume “with potential to cause strain on the city.”
The number of tourists arriving in Prague has been increasing steadily. Back in 1989 there were 1.6m tourists arriving in the Czech capital. In 2000 the figure was 2.6m and in 2017 as many as 7.6m, according to figures from Prague City Tourism.
A Euromonitor study (2017), noted Prague had become the fifth most visited destination in Europe, after London, Paris, Rome and Istanbul, and experts are predicting further growth.
Prague will host an event for all Italian tin-wasp enthusiasts. This year, it’ll take place one month earlier than usual – from Friday, 21st till Sunday, 23rd of June 2019.
The traditional meeting of the Vespa owners from various countries takes place at the Dzban site near an artificial lake.
“We have participants from the neighboring countries, Poland, Austria, and Germany. There is also one woman from Italy who drove some 1000 kilometres alone on the way to Prague, and some Dutch people. We are still waiting for one from Albania,” said Simon, vice-president of Vespa Club Prague.
Some participants have brand new Vespas, while others are looking after their scooters for years carefully.
Several fans drive even historical Vespa scooters from the 1950s.
The scooter’s name means “wasp” in Italian as its engine sounds like a wasp’s buzzing. Others point to the scooter’s shape that resembles this black-yellow insect.
