Škoda Elroq named Czechia’s Car of the Year
The Škoda Elroq has been named Czechia’s Car of the Year 2026, with the Mercedes-Benz CLA finishing second and the BMW iX3 in third, the Association of Automobile Importers announced today. The winner was selected by 19 leading Czech motoring journalists.
Unemployment in Czech Republic Rises to 5.1% in January
Unemployment in the Czech Republic rose to 5.1% in January. The highest rate was recorded in the Ústí Region at 7.5%, while Prague had the lowest at 3.8%. Labour Minister Aleš Juchelka said the increase is largely linked to new benefit payment rules, which led many people to register with employment offices at the start of the year.
KFC Czech Republic Says Food Safety Issues Were Minor
KFC’s management in the Czech Republic said food served in its restaurants meets safety standards and that issues identified during inspections were not critical. The company stressed that no branches were closed for sanitary reasons and that all shortcomings were quickly addressed. According to the chain’s CEO, restaurants are regularly checked by regulators and audit results are comparable to the wider food service market.
Czech Paralympians to Receive Full Medal Bonuses
Czech Paralympians competing at the Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo will receive medal bonuses under the same conditions as Olympic athletes. The government confirmed that each medal — including second and subsequent ones — will be paid in full without reductions. Earlier plans to cut payments after the first medal had drawn public criticism.
Czechia Improves in Corruption Perception Index
Czechia has improved its position in the global corruption perceptions index compiled by international organisation Transparency International, climbing to 39th place from 46th in the previous ranking. Slovakia, by contrast, slipped further down the list. The annual report, covering 182 countries, once again puts top scores to Denmark, Finland and Singapore.
