More Than Cocktails: The Story Behind the Iconic Tretter's Prague

Prague Morning

For many expats in Prague, Tretter’s is far more than a cocktail bar. Over the years, the brand has grown into a collection of venues known for their atmosphere, elegance, and long-standing place in the city’s social life.

Behind the brand is Michael Tretter, one of the most recognized names in Czech hospitality. During a recent conversation, he shared the story behind Tretter’s, its philosophy, and some lesser-known details that help explain its enduring popularity.

“Our goal was to create places that leave a lasting impression,” Tretter says. “We wanted our venues to feel as though they had existed for decades—even when they were brand new.”

That idea of timelessness has guided the company from the beginning. From interior design and music to lighting and service, every detail is carefully considered to create a sense of character and history.

One of the most remarkable parts of the Tretter’s story is the American Bar inside Prague’s Municipal House. Hidden beneath the building’s marble staircase, the venue first opened in 1912 and is considered one of the oldest cocktail bars in Europe.

Its original features have largely survived, including artwork by painter Mikoláš Aleš and historical design elements linked to the era of Franz Kafka.

“When we received the opportunity to help bring this venue back into the spotlight, it was impossible to refuse,” says Tretter.

While cocktails remain an important part of the brand, Tretter’s has expanded well beyond the bar business. Today, its activities include restaurants and cafés, hospitality training through Tretter’s Academy, delicatessen products, catering, private events, and a growing range of branded products.

Food also plays a central role in the concept.

“We often combine familiar recipes with unexpected ingredients,” Tretter explains. “The goal is always to create a memorable experience.”

One detail many guests may not notice is the brand’s focus on scent. Tretter’s has developed its own sensory identity, including signature coffee, pralines, truffle products, Burgundy Crémant, candles, and a custom fragrance used throughout its venues.

“The moment guests enter one of our establishments, they recognize the scent of Tretter’s,” Tretter says.

Although Michael Tretter has spent the past three decades building the modern brand, its roots stretch back to 1928. After working abroad, including a period in New York following the Velvet Revolution, he returned to Prague inspired by the hospitality traditions of cities such as Paris, London, and New York.

“I always felt Prague deserved venues that could stand alongside those people experience in Paris, London, or New York,” he says.

Professional service. Attention to detail. Atmosphere. Elegance. Familiar faces. Genuine hospitality. These qualities have become increasingly rare—and increasingly valuable.

As Michael puts it:”We build our venues for guests who understand the meaning of timeless elegance.”

And perhaps that is the real secret behind Tretter’s enduring success.
