Prague Philharmonic Could Begin Construction in 2028. New Visuals Reveal Design

Prague has taken another step toward building the long-planned Vltava Philharmonic.

The Prague Development Company (PDS) submitting an application for planning permission and new visualizations revealing the project in greater detail.

The application covers not only the Philharmonic building but also the surrounding public spaces, transport infrastructure and connections to the existing metro, tram, road, cycling and pedestrian networks.

If the permitting process stays on schedule, the city expects to receive the necessary approval in the first quarter of 2027. A tender for the construction company would then follow, with building work potentially starting in the first quarter of 2028.

The project is planned for the Bubny-Zátory district, near the existing Vltavská metro station. The new cultural complex is expected to be completed in 2033, when trial operations could begin.

The building was designed by Danish architecture studio BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, which won an international competition in May 2022. Preparation of the detailed permit documentation began in 2025.

The complex will have three underground levels and six floors above ground. It will contain five music halls, creative spaces, restaurants and other facilities.

The project is also intended to provide new premises for the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK and music collections belonging to the Municipal Library of Prague. The Czech Philharmonic is also expected to gain additional facilities, addressing the limitations of its current premises.

Construction could start in early 2028

The current estimated cost of the Philharmonic building is around CZK 12.33 billion, including equipment but excluding VAT. The surrounding infrastructure and public spaces are expected to cost an additional CZK 5 billion, also excluding VAT.
