Prague Activists Urge Mayor to Block Kanye West Concert
Prague Morning
Prague human rights organizations have launched a petition demanding that Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda prevent the American rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, from performing in the city.
The show was reportedly rescheduled for Prague following the cancellation of Slovakia’s Rubikon Festival, which was set to take place near Bratislava in July.
No Czech promoter has officially confirmed the concert yet.
The petition, signed by around three dozen figures including lawyers, artists, filmmakers, and former ombudsman Anna Šabatová, calls on the city to intervene.
The signatories argue that hosting Ye in Prague would not only insult historical memory but also glorify military violence and humiliate victims of the Nazi regime.
They cite Czech soldiers, civilians, political prisoners, resistance members, and the Jewish community as groups that would be disrespected by the performance.
Activists further warn that the concert could pose a security risk, attracting radicals and extremists from both the Czech Republic and abroad.
They urge the mayor to use all available measures, including negotiations with organizers and interventions through city services, to prevent the event from taking place.
While the petition has drawn public attention, officials note that no Czech promoter has confirmed the show, and staging the concert on such short notice may be challenging.
