A New Chapter Begins: The 1st of September at Canadian International High School in Prague
Prague Morning
September 1, 2026, marked a special milestone for Canadian International High School in Prague: the very first day of school.
For the first time, our doors opened to our students, their families and our teaching team. New classrooms, new teachers, new classmates – and the beginning of an educational journey that starts in Prague and reaches far beyond it.
Rather than a traditional first day of lessons, we created a special welcome programme designed to bring our new school community together. The day included an official opening ceremony, introductions to teachers and classmates, team-building activities and plenty of opportunities to get to know the school and one another.
First Day, First Impressions
A school’s first impression is about much more than classrooms, timetables and textbooks. It is about people: the teachers who guide and inspire students, the classmates they will spend some of the most important years of their lives with, and the atmosphere that gives them the confidence to grow, explore and be themselves.
That is why our first day began with getting to know each other rather than with regular classes. From early morning, students arrived with their parents and were welcomed by members of the school team. Over coffee and tea, families had a chance to meet their new classmates, speak with teachers, ask questions and get to know the school community.
Each student also received a Welcome Pack containing everything they needed to get started, including their timetable, school holiday calendar, attendance guidelines, important documents and staff contacts.
Opening the School Year
The morning continued with the official opening ceremony. The school’s leadership team and teachers welcomed students and parents and introduced the academic year ahead. They shared more about the school’s educational programme, its values and the opportunities available to students, including international educational trips to the USA, Canada, Switzerland and England during school holidays. One of the highlights was a special video message from lecturers in Canada.
For our students, it was a meaningful reminder that although their education begins here in Prague, they are part of a much broader international academic community from the very beginning.
Introducing Our Teachers
The ceremony was followed by introductions to the teaching team. Each teacher shared a little about themselves, their subject and what students could look forward to during the year ahead. After all, education is about more than a curriculum or a textbook. It is also about the people who help students discover new interests, develop their strengths, set ambitious goals and work towards achieving them.
A Personal iPad for Every Student
The first day also brought the first gift from the school: every student received their own iPad. The iPad will be an everyday part of school life, supporting learning, creativity and independent work. Students will use it for assignments, presentations and projects, digital learning platforms and research, while developing practical digital skills that will be valuable well beyond their school years. For us, technology is not something added to education.
It is an integral part of how students learn and work in a modern international school. Following the opening ceremony, the school team held an organisational session for students and parents. Families were introduced to the structure of the school day, the digital platforms students would be using and the key information they needed to know at the start of the academic year.
And then the parents’ session came to an end. The atmosphere changed – the school was now officially in the hands of its first students. And that was when the fun really started.
More Than a Class – A Team
Starting at a new school means meeting a lot of new people. On the first day, we wanted those unfamiliar faces to quickly become names, conversations and, hopefully, new friendships.
Students took part in icebreaker games, team challenges and a range of activities designed to help them get to know each other. The teachers joined in too. It was a simple but important way to break down the usual distance between “teacher” and “student” and introduce one of the principles we value at our school: learning works best when it is built on interaction, trust and mutual respect.
Seven Countries. One Class.
To make introductions even easier, every student received a name badge showing their name and country. It may have been a small detail, but it quickly became a conversation starter. This academic year, our students come from the USA, Greece, Türkiye, Germany, Georgia, Ukraine and the Czech Republic.
Seven countries, one classroom – and the beginning of a truly international school community. For our students, being surrounded by classmates from different backgrounds means much more than studying together. It is an opportunity to discover different cultures, exchange perspectives, make friends from around the world and build relationships that may last well beyond their school years.
Choosing the School Uniform
With the introductions underway, it was time for another important first-day decision: the school uniform. Students had their measurements taken for their individually tailored uniforms and were able to choose between the proposed school colours.
Each student will receive two sets, giving them the flexibility to alternate throughout the school week. The fitting was another part of the busy first day – and quickly became one of its memorable moments. The school year had only just begun, but students were already starting to picture what everyday life at their new school would look like.
School Life Beyond the Classroom
Of course, school life is about more than studying. Movement and physical activity are also an important part of a balanced school experience, which is why the next stop on September 1 was the fitness centre. A full-year fitness centre membership is included in the tuition fee for every Canadian International High School in Prague student.
Students can visit Xplore Fitness in central Prague in their free time and take part in group classes, making regular physical activity a natural part of their routine. The visit to the fitness centre brought the first day to a close – a fitting end to a day that had been about much more than simply starting a new school.
The First Day Is Over. The Journey Has Just Begun.
In a single day, our first students met their teachers and classmates, received their iPads, learned how school would work, had their uniform measurements taken, explored their fitness options, played games, laughed, talked and began to build a new international community.
A new school. Its first students. The first introductions, conversations and shared experiences.
And now, Canadian International High School in Prague has its first September 1 – a day that will always be part of our school’s story. Welcome to Canadian International High School in Prague. This is where the journey begins.
