Bangkok Gears Up for the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings
Prague Morning
All eyes are on Thailand as the country prepares to host the 2026 International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) Annual Meetings, also known as the 2026 Annual Meetings or AM2026 Thailand.
Running from 12-18 October 2026, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) in Bangkok, the event will mark Thailand’s second time hosting the meetings, following its first in 1991. This will make Thailand one of only three nations to have hosted the IMF–WBG Annual Meetings twice.
The IMF–WBG Annual Meetings, held for two consecutive years in Washington D.C. and every third year in one of the 191 member countries, serve as a gathering of top economic figures from around the world. By covering a broad range of issues, the meetings aim to strengthen global financial stability, combat poverty, and ensure inclusive economic growth and job creation.
Thailand’s selection to host again in 2026 highlights how the country has advanced over the past three decades in terms of its institutional progress, economic resilience, and sustained engagement with international partners. As host, Thailand brings decades’ worth of experience in economic transformation and regional leadership to the table.
The “Olympics of Finance”
Often dubbed the “Olympics of Finance,” the meetings are set to attract more than 15,000 participants, including finance ministers, central bankers, economists, business leaders, civil society representatives, and journalists from the IMF and World Bank’s 191 member countries, including the Czech Republic.
The Annual Meetings will be held under the theme of “Thailand’s New Horizons: Empowering People, Building Resilience”. Therefore, the meetings will focus on enhancing people’s potential and creating opportunities, with the goal of fostering a financial and economic system that is safe, sustainable, and inclusive.
Under the theme, the government plans to showcase four policy priorities it believes are increasingly relevant in an era marked by geopolitical fragmentation, economic volatility, and demographic change. These are indeed the issues that warrant serious conversation and sincere collaboration among the global community and all stakeholders to address them in the most efficient way:
- Digital Transformation: The first centers on digital transformation and artificial intelligence, using the examples from Thailand’s Digital Public Infrastructure, including PromptPay and cross-border QR payment systems.
- Connected Economy: A second pillar focuses on what is called “Building Resilience in a Fragmented World”. In order to achieve this, the concept of a “Connected Economy” capable of bridging divides between competing blocs while strengthening supply chains and investment links will be explored.
- Climate Finance: The third pillar addresses climate finance, with emphasis on reforms to help countries adapt to climate change.
- Longevity Economy: The final priority seeks to turn the challenges of ageing populations into new sources of economic growth.
Alongside these focus areas, the Bank of Thailand plans to unveil the “Bangkok Blueprint,” an international framework developed jointly with the IMF and the World Bank aimed at combating digital financial fraud and strengthening trust in the digital economy.

Readiness in All Aspects
According to the Fiscal Policy Office, Thailand’s overall readiness has been assessed at “Grade A” following months of coordination between the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Thailand, and the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings Secretariat.
Preparations extend beyond the conference venue. Authorities have developed contingency plans for traffic management, emergency responses, and arrangements for high-level foreign officials. A working group has also been established to address cybersecurity matters.
Beyond Tourism: A Regional Economic Capital
Beyond its long-established reputation as a world-renowned tourist destination, the 2026 Annual Meetings offer Thailand an excellent opportunity to present another dimension of the Kingdom to the international community.
AM2026 reinforces Thailand’s standing as a trusted international partner while highlighting its growing role as a regional economic capital and a hub for finance, investment, policy innovation, and multilateral dialogue in Southeast Asia. Having said that, countries and companies vying for economic and business opportunities cannot overlook Thailand and its potential to become an important impetus for their long-term prosperity and growth.
