The number of cases in the country is increasing, but Prague is not discouraged. The onset of Christmas distracts from worries: open fairs, with people in line for freshly cut Christmas trees or waiting around to buy tons of wrapping paper. Food-wise, the local coffee shops are brimming with aromatic coffee, fresh pastries and self-roasted beans. But no in Prague one does innovative and specialty coffee drinks better than The Miners. “Nothing is impossible” is the motto on their website. After talking with Egor (the main co-owner of The MINERS)one realizes that much is true. Egor opened his first coffee house when at age 19. It is still open, and any curious reader can find it at Tusarova 25. Once a newcomer to the coffe scene, now everyone knows The Miners as a successfully growing chain. Prague Morning met with Egor in one of the coffee houses — Churchill (as the locals call it, all because the coffee shop is located in the business center of the same name). This coffee house feels special — a world of its own where various people indulge in their activities, surrounded by the delicious smells wafting from behind the register. Per Egor, the...
Online supermarket Rohlik is now expanding into Italy, Romania and Spain under the brand name Sezamo. Next year, the Czech company will reach seven countries, after which more cities will follow in Germany. 8,000 items within 2 hours The Czech online supermarket Rohlik is continuing its European conquest: in 2022, the disruptor will launch in Italy, Romania and Spain, bringing the total up to seven countries. In the new markets, the online supermarket will be branded Sezamo, named after sesame seeds and the phrase “open sesame”. Until now, the e-commerce player operated in each country under a different name. In Austria, for instance, they are called Gurkerl, and in Germany, the company operates under the brand name Knuspr. Despite the different names, the recipe remains the same throughout: Rohlik is an online-only supermarket delivering to consumers’ doorsteps within two to three hours and offers a full range of supermarket products. Sezamo, for example, intends to offer around 8,000 fresh items delivered within three hours in Italy and two hours in Romania. “To be ten times better than the supermarket” The concept is thus a cross between the growing express delivery services, such as retailer Gorillas – present as keynote speaker at RetailDetail Night – and traditional online grocery...

The Michelin Guide Prague 2021 is released today and features 27 restaurants in the capital city. While the 2021 selection sees no new Stars, both Field and La Degustation Bohême Bourgeoise retain their One Michelin Stars. The Eatery is a cool, industrial-style restaurant with a large kitchen counter, staffed by personable chefs who serve a daily menu of skilfully cooked, easy-to-eat seasonal Czech cuisine. Dejvická 34 by Tomáš Černý is a cosy, enthusiastically run neighbourhood spot north of the river where the eponymous chef-owner showcases top-quality imported ingredients in robust, flavour-packed Italian and Czech dishes. The stars are given out by anonymous inspectors, and restaurants can earn up to three stars, although the Czech Republic only has only ever had one-star restaurants. Na Kopci, Divinis and Eska also retain their Bib Gourmand awards. Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides said: “We are delighted to have found two more restaurants to add to our list of Bib Gourmand awards in Prague. These restaurants represent the great value for money which can be found in the city, whilst also offering high-quality cooking with fantastic flavours.” Field won its star in 2016, while La Degustation Bohême Bourgeois has had a star since 2012. The anonymous Michelin inspectors also found four new...
Prague’s pastry boutique Votre Plaisir will enchant you with their full, fascinating flavours and perfectly thought-out, precisely executed details. It’s love at first sight or, better of said, at first taste. Gabriela and Michal are a lovely couple who were led to the founding of Votre Plaisir by a shared love of food and stubbornness to do things as best as they could. The whole idea behind Votre Plaisir began years ago in French Guiana, where they spent their holidays and quickly realized it was time to start turning their passion for pastry into a real job. After their trip, they gradually left their jobs and slowly built a confectionery factory in Prague 9. At first, they became regular sellers of farmers’ markets in Náplavka and Kulaťák, delivered many goods to many cafes and restaurants, and in the end, opened their first pastry boutique. However, they were forced to close it because of the water flute, but they didn’t wait too long and opened a new boutique in November 2019 in the heart of Prague, Klimentská street. The success behind Votre Plaisir stands behind a combination of quality ingredients, handicrafts, and rich experience. Gabriela and Michal create unique desserts that simultaneously surprise...
Lidl officially launched today its special vegetables and fruit boxes. It wanted to prove that unattractive produce is just as edible. These special boxes are put on the shelves every day, with various “ugly” – but still edible – vegetables and fruits. The weight of one box is about three kilograms. Vegetables and fruit have been selected from farmers’ crops because they are misshapen, have growth cracks or are smaller or larger than average. The produce is washed but the discount reflects the fact that customers may need to spend extra time peeling it or they might not be able to use the whole vegetable. “The positive feedback that we have received off the back of our trial has been incredible; from our colleagues who are showing so much passion for them, to our customers who were getting in touch from the get-go asking where they could get one,” Eliška Froschová Stehlíková, head of CSR projects at Lidl, commented. The average Czech throws away about 40 kilograms of food a year. People in housing estates waste the most food, while in rural areas, waste is less, which is related, among other things, to the fact that in these localities there...
Back in April of this year, Kohoutek opened its doors in Prague, ready to treat restaurant-goers to a new and distinct menu immersed in Italian tradition. Forget pizza and pasta. Kohoutek has introduced cockerel – which is a young, male rooster – to the Czech Republic. For years cockerel has been a favourite food among families in northern Italy, but it is not traditionally served as part of Czech cuisine. The founder of Kohoutek, Fabio, moved to the Czech Republic 15 years ago with the intent to eventually share the quintessential tastes of his region, Brescia. He knew that cockerel would be unfamiliar to the people here, but since his venture began, it has been thriving. Cooking the cockerel is a long and delicate process, but it is totally worth it to achieve the succulent taste. Alberto Vitale, executive manager at Kohoutek, broke it down for us. “We marinate the product for more than 48 hours, using more than 12 different spices. Afterward, it is smoked and then grilled,” he explained. “The process takes around 50 hours before it is served to the client, which is why it is so nice and so tasty.” Every dish in the restaurant is...
In the hopes to reduce food waste, scientists from the Faculty of Agriculture (FA) of Mendel University in Brno brew classic Czech lager from unsold hardened bread. Since starting this project, they have prepared more than 30 lager recipes, as well as several other recipes for top-fermented beers. “Even uneaten bread is a waste in a way. By no means does this mean any soiled or moldy bread, but hardened bread that has not been sold, ” Milan Geršl of the Institute of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Engineering AF, said. Procedures adapted from the American and British methods of beer brewing inspired the researchers for this project. However, in these other methods, different types of pastry are used, resulting in a beer that is very different from the classic Czech brew. The researchers, therefore, aimed to prepare a recipe for classic Czech lager, which could be cooked from various types of bread. In the project, beer is created in two ways. One group brews beer purely from uneaten pastries, while the other uses bread baked by hand. Thanks to the content of cereals, it is possible to replace part of the malt with bread. “When we prepare new recipes and...
Prague has been spoiled with the number of great new restaurants, bars, and cafes that have opened up in recent months, and the places listed below are no exception. Zdibský brewery Address: U Továrny 1, Zdiby The owners of the Zdibský brewery boast of self-brewed beer. Straying from established spirit standards, their motto is that beer is like sirloin — it has thousands of different recipes, yet it is a staple in every household. Their light beer is not pure gold, lending it its own original “final touch.” In the Zdibský brewery, customers can choose from four types of draft beers: Zámecké desítka, eleven Zlatý kopec, twelve Ležáček and American beer eleven Miami. These are accompanied by beer classics — pickled camembert, tartare, greaves spread or grilled venison sausage. On weekends, they serve a special lunch menu, inspired by different cuisines. You have a unique opportunity to soak up the taste of Mexico and domestic Czech classics in one locale. Restaurace u Radnice Address: Generála Šišky 6, Prague 12 Looking for a local, fairly priced lunch? This eatery in Prague Modřany is the place to visit. Fans of Czech cuisine will love it here, as the menu includes...
On-demand delivery giant DoorDash announced Tuesday it was acquiring food delivery company Wolt in an all-stock deal valued at €7 billion, or $8.1 billion. Talking about the acquisition, Tony Xu, co-founder and CEO of DoorDash said in a statement that the move “will accelerate our product development, bring greater focus to each of our markets and improve the value we provide to consumers, merchants, as well as Dashers and couriers around the world.” Finland-based Wolt was founded in 2014 by Miki Kuusi, who, upon the deal closing, will run DoorDash International and report to Xu. The company has over 4,000 employees across 23 countries and its technology enables users to easily discover and receive food via its platform by selecting a restaurant, placing the order and hitting send. Wolt has raised over $850 million to date, according to its Crunchbase profile. Its most recent funding round was $530 million in January, led by Iconiq Growth, with participation from Tiger Global, DST, KKR, Prosus, EQT Growth and Coatue. Everli, an Italian online marketplace for grocery shopping, recently signed a partnership agreement with LÁHVE: wine store. Prague residents now have the opportunity to order quality wines for their home or office at affordable prices. This can be done on the Everli website or through the mobile application. Everli entered the Czech market in April 2021, offering products from major retail chains like Billa, Kaufland, Tesco and Lidl. Unlike with the other retailers, the entire assortment of the LÁHVE: store is available for delivery through Everli: about 500 types of wines (Italian, French, Czech, German and Austrian). Everli operates on a simple system: the client, as in a regular online store, selects products from the range of partner networks and places an order. The courier goes to the nearest supermarket, makes purchases from the list and delivers the products to the specified address. At the moment, wines are only delivered to these areas (see map below). Next year LÁHVE: will open a second store in Prague and the delivery area will expand. The standard delivery costs are 59 Kč and with Everli Plus plan you can get unlimited free delivery for only 92 Kč per month. You can place an order...
There was a time in the not-too-distant past when brunch options in Prague were scarce. Things have since changed. Brunch is now an institution with countless possibilities found throughout the capital. The wide range of choices now available could certainly lead to debates concerning the best brunch in the city and VENUE, located in a lovely part of Old Town, has earned a spot in this discussion. VENUE began serving brunch in 2016. It is this establishment’s central focus served all day. The menu is both expansive and compact. A guest should never feel overwhelmed whilst trying to select a meal and VENUE succeeds by eliminating that dilemma. This is quite an achievement considering the numerous dishes on offer. The service was friendly, effective, and attentive. The staff were there when needed, but also knew when to back off. Meals arrived quickly even though the restaurant was quite full. The bacon french toast was an excellent choice. It wasn’t smothered in syrup or sugar to the extent where the bread was soggy which would detract from the taste. However, the bacon’s consistency differed slightly, but not to the point where this would elicit any sort of complaint. This was a...
