The Hummus Bar opened its doors for the first time back in 2015, initially named Hummus Nofech. Since then, it changed name and location, but one thing remains the same: the delicious, vibrant Mediterranean food they prepare. Since day one, the main goal was to offer the best hummus and experience with an authentic Mediterranean taste in Prague. The creamy chickpea dip with middle east origin became very popular, and you can find it almost everywhere – but finding a genuine, good quality may be a challenge. In The Hummus Bar, they prepare fresh hummus without preservatives every day. The offer is extensive – from the original hummus, baba ganush, to one with hard-boiled egg, mushrooms, grilled chicken, kebab, or falafel – everyone can find the right one for their taste preferences. In addition to hummus, you get their pitta bread which they freshly bake in their bakery, and let me tell you; it’s so light and delicious. Together with pita, they also bake their baklava, which I suggest you add to your order. There are two chefs in charge in the kitchen, one from Israel and one from Lebanon, both giving a special touch to the dishes. The menu...
The ManaBurger was voted Plant Product of the Year in a poll hosted by Rostlinne.cz, a Czech initiative that helps producers, supermarkets, and restaurants bring new plant foods to market. This is the second time that a meat alternative has won the poll. The ManaBurger dethroned last year’s winner, vegan ground meat produced by Next Level Hack. The enormous spike in interest in plant-based alternatives to meat has been confirmed by hard data; the sale thereof in Europe has increased by two-thirds in the last two years. The demand for plant products is growing year on year. According to data from the Smart Protein Project, collected using Nielsen MarketTrack from 11 European countries, including Austria, Germany, and Poland, the market for such products in Europe almost doubled between 2018 and 2020. The most popular category was plant alternatives to meat, whose sales increased by over two-thirds (68%) during this period, and even by as much as 78% in Germany. The demand is highest for chilled products like burgers and hot dogs. Still, consumers would like to see an even larger selection of plant-based products on store shelves. “Interest in plant products is also skyrocketing in the Czech Republic. Indeed, almost...
The Czech Parliament’s upper house on Thursday overwhelmingly rejected draft legislation to reduce dependency on imports by imposing a quota of locally-produced food to be on sale in supermarkets. Members of the Senate voted 75-0 against the bill, under which the percentage of Czech food sold in stores bigger than 400 sq. meters would be a minimum 55% in 2022 and rise to at least 73% in 2028. The lower house of Parliament, which approved the controversial requirement in January, can override the Senate´s rejection by a simple majority. The bill was drafted by the opposition populist Freedom and Direct Democracy party that pushed it through the lower house with the help from the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Andrej Babis and the opposition Communists. Proponents of the bill argued that the coronavirus pandemic showed that it is important for the country to be self-sufficient in food production. They said the move will also boost local agriculture. It applies to about 120 food products including pork, beef, milk, honey and vegetables produced in the Czech Republic. Eight European Union countries and the bloc´s executive body strongly criticized the bill, saying it would break EU rules by discriminating against imported products.

The gastronomy industry has been struggling to survive for the past year enduring numerous government-mandated closures. As a result, only 45 percent of the previously open gastronomy businesses still remain open and operating through a window. According to recent data published by the Confederation of Trade and Tourism, restaurants have lost an estimated 72 billion crowns, down 37 percent from their pre-covid earnings. Before the pandemic ravaged the gastronomy industry in the Czech Republic would earn about 195 billion crowns each year. Restaurants in the Zlín, Karlovy Vary, and Pilsen regions have been among the worst afflicted by closures earning only half of the reported sales before the pandemic. While the Prague City Tourism board has actively promoted local tourism over the past year, the capital still remains at 66 percent of its earnings recorded before March 2020. Insight into the industry’s revenue loss comes from Dotykačka, the point-of-sale system used in restaurants and retailers across the Czech Republic. “It can certainly be said that there is a great dependence on tourism. Prague, even though most companies have remained open there, is moving in the middle of the field. On the contrary, places that were open during the summer, such...
The Association of Farmers Markets has sent an appeal to the Government, which included detailed plans of how open-air markets could be run. However, its plea to reopen under strict hygienic conditions has been met with stony silence, while bankruptcy looms for small, family-run businesses. “Small farmers are already under pressure due to the closure of the HoReCa [hotels, restaurants and catering] which makes up the majority of direct sales. Closing farmers’ markets will have a further dramatic impact on small producers,” says the chairman of the Association of Farmers Markets Jiří Sedláček, who manages the Náplavka, Kubáň and Heřmaňák farmers markets in Prague. Market operators argue that markets should be treated as essential services, on par with grocery stores and pharmacies. “From the very beginning of the announcement of measures to combat the spread of coronavirus, we feel discriminated. While all food retailers – whether small stores or hypermarkets – are open without restrictions, farmers’ markets had to stay closed,” Sedláček told Lidovky.cz “Producers who supply goods to the markets are harmed. The main focus of the markets is selling food, moreover outside, where, according to experts, shopping is safer than in air-conditioned stores,” he added. Farmers who sell...
Rustic Jerky is a Czech/Irish success story which is thriving despite the ups and downs of the last twelve months. Mark Daly, founder, and head honcho at Rustic Jerky founded the company after trying and failing to get good quality jerky that also tasted good. He experimented by making his homemade beef jerky, which became so popular with his colleagues that he decided to go full time making jerky, starting Rustic Jerky in 2015. Beef jerky was a relatively foreign concept in the Czech Republic, so Rustic Jerky had a great opportunity to introduce the product into the Czech market, and they have been pioneers in this field ever since. The foundation for their success is simply that Rustic Jerky combines quality, locally sourced meat with unique flavors, ranging from succulently sweet to outrageously spicy. In addition, jerky itself is a protein-rich, lean superfood, so the Rustic Jerky team found themselves with a healthy product which tastes great too. Rustic Jerky has seen gradual but constant growth, establishing themselves as a premium niche superfood on the Czech market, before slowly expanding across Europe, with a presence now in eleven different countries. As well as selling directly to hungry individuals, Rustic...
Prague’s restaurant businesses have been innovating and coming up with new ways to keep attracting customers and catch up with their sales. Some sell two portions for the price of one, and some offer weekly home menus, for example. As E15.cz reports, According to a study conducted by Dotykačka, sales for many restaurants fell by 63 billion CZK in 2020, a sharp decline from a sale of 195 billion CZK in 2019. Conditions have become significantly worse, as one in four businesses is on the verge of complete extinction. At the moment, many employees in gastronomy have had to be laid off. On the other hand, cafés and bistros have remained intact during the continuing lockdown, since many of them were already created to adapt and use the concept of ‘take-away’ food even before the lockdown started. Sales for these types of places have apparently fallen by only 15%. Yet there are still restaurateurs who, even after almost a year of pandemic, do not lose hope and have decided to offer their customers an alternative to visiting the hospitality industry. Take a look at our report on Prague companies that have thrown themselves into inventing news for customers. Eat Perfect...

Way back in 1995, American expats Glenn Spicker and Scott Kelly introduced Prague to the addictive delicacy that is the authentic American bagel. Now, some twenty-five years later, Glenn, Scott, and their new partner Isaac Starobin are re-launching the iconic Bohemia Bagel brand featuring a totally updated bagel based on traditional New York recipes passed down through the generations. The menu is rounded out with flavored cream cheeses, breakfast specials, and deli sandwiches with meat sliced paper-thin. For now, the company operates online-only, so locals and expats going through bagel withdrawal can get their fix by delivery via Wolt, Bolt, and DameJidlo or pickup at Cali Brothers Restaurant in Holesovice, and they even offer a 10% discount for pickup. However, the trio of native New Yorkers aren’t stopping there. Rumor has it that they’re working on opening a few delis and schmear shops that would be right at home in the Big Apple. Bohemia Bagel has a truly mind-boggling array of delivery options to get fresh bagels to their customers as quickly and painlessly as possible, which is great because who wants to wait 3 days when bagel fever strikes? Besides their presence on all major delivery apps, they can...
