Bazén Barrandov – Forgotten Pool

In the ’30s, there used to be happy crowds, sportsmen and many parties here. Now it’s a jungle taking over a place that used to be a pool and the only thing visible is the devastated diving tower. And everybody knows Bazén Barrandov was here. I have seen the diving tower many times from a train or a car, and when I finally got here, I was really surprised. The pool used to be really big and deep (of course because of the tower) and even if there are wild plants and basically jungle all over the place today, you can still feel the old glory.  This place used to be a top spot for the high society of the ’30s in Czechoslovakia. At the top of the hill, there used to be a nice restaurant called Barrandovské terasy and there used to be swimming competitions held in Bazén Barrandov, so many people used to come here for a trip from Prague, for a coffee or a bite or to watch the competition or just for a swim. Prague Independent Film Festival to Kick Off on August 5th

Prague Independent Film Festival (PIFF) opens its doors for the fourth time on August 5th. During 4 days visitors and residents of Prague will be able to see some of the best new films from all over the world presented by international filmmakers. Prague Independent Film Festival will be held for the fourth time in the Kino Pilotů cinema. The festival will screen films in a variety of different genres and styles.  The festival will begin with an independent American film “Night Walk”, directed by Aziz Tazi, a Moroccan director from Los Angeles. It is a thrilling crime drama about a man wrongly imprisoned for the murder of his wife, with major film stars, such as Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, and Sean Stone. The film will be presented by the director himself.  The film “Away from the Shore” from award winning Bulgarian director Kostadin Bonev, is a drama about a talented theater director who has been expelled from the capital for two years and has been sent to a small provincial theater. The (Sad) Fate of Vyšehrad Train Station

Located in a whimsical part of Prague that many tourists do not venture to, is the abandoned Vyšehrad Train Station.  This Art Nouveau gem sits quietly in her old grandeur, a crumbling boarded up beauty laden with grafiti just waiting (like many other gorgeous structures in the city of Prague) for a new facelift. The neighborhood is beautiful as well as it is surrounded by the Cubist homes of Vyšehrad such as the Kovarovic Villa, the ancient Vyšehrad fortress, the fabled Vltava River and the Charles University Botanic Gardens. As it is no longer in use as a train station it could more than likely be used for a social complex with cafes, kiosks and gallery space.   A bit of history… The project to build a railway station in the Vysehrad district was set up in 1867 in connection with the proposal to build the Prague connecting line. Prague to Commemorate the First Defenestration Anniversary

New Town Hall and the Municipal District Prague 2 have prepared an interesting programme for the anniversary of the First Defenestration of Prague, running until the 31st of July. You can take part in guided tours, an open-air cinema in the New Town Hall courtyard and other events in Karlovo náměstí. As part of this notable commemoration, three guided tours of the New Town Hall will take place. During these tours, you will be able to visit places that are not commonly accessible to the public, such as ​​the former prison and the Large Hall, whose windows the councillors were thrown from. You will also be able to visit ‘Konšelský salonek’ (a lounge for city councillors of the time), the historical Maazhaus, the Chapel and other areas of the tower, including a former tower guard’s apartment. FREE Music Concerts at Wallenstein Garden Start Today

From July 4trh to September 19th, Wallenstein Garden hosts classical music concerts every Thursday at 5.00 p.m. until September 26, 2019. You can listen for free to performing brass bands, choral groups, jazz bands and many others. The garden was created at the same time as the Wallenstein Palace in the early 17th century, in the lower part of the Malá Strana District. It displays a fine example of Mannerist layout and decoration, with very diverse sections. This Friday: Open Day at Liechtenstein Palace

In order to commemorate the end of WW2, the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic is going to open for the public Liechtenstein Palace at the Kampa, a historic palace built in the late 17th century, renovated in 1864. Liechtenstein Palace is one of the most beautiful and largest palaces in Prague. It´s used for representative purposes by The Office of the Government of the Czech Republic. On the second floor, there are apartments, in which stayed, for example, Spanish King Juan Carlos with his wife Sofie, British Queen Elisabeth II, Japanese Emperor Akihito with Empress Michiko. The halls and salons in the basement are used for working meetings and friendly gatherings. Between 1979 and 1991 the palace was renovated according to the project of architect B. Fuchse jr. and adapted to serve the purposes of the Government Presidium. Its premises were enlarged by one basement level and the peripheral walls were secured against the threat of slipping down into the Vltava river From 1895 the palace belonged to the Prague Municipality, which used it for a variety of official purposes, and made several adaptations. New Exhibition Brings Impressionist Masterpieces to Prague

The National Gallery Prague (NGP) opened a large exhibition French Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Ordrupgaard Collection with 60 works including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro on June 29 in the Kinsky Palace. The display will show also artistic overlaps with other artistic tendencies. Romantic painting will be represented by Eugène Delacroix and the realistic method by Gustave Courbet or the artists of the so-called Barbizon school, such as Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny. The outstanding works from the collection of sixty paintings will also include chef d’oeuvres by post-Impressionists Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. Since autumn 2017, Ordrupgaard’s unique collection of French art has been touring outside the borders of Denmark. The museum is closed, and the French masterpieces have therefore been available for loan to a large number of prominent museums abroad. Prague Castle Is (Again) The Most Popular Czech Tourist Attraction

Prague Castle remains to be the most popular tourist destination in the Czech Republic, according to figures put together by Czech Tourism agency. Last year, it attracted over 2.4 million tourists, a nearly three-percent increase year-on-year. The first 3 tourist destinations in 2018: Prague Castle (2.4 million visitors) Petrin funicular (2.07 million visitors) Prague zoo (1.4 million visitors) While Prague Castle may be a given, some surprises made the diverse list of locations—which includes plenty of destinations beyond Prague—from the industrial sights of Dolní Vítkovice, to the zoo in Zlín and Aqualand Moravia. CzechTourism also released some other rankings, aside from the top 50 list. The most popular architectural site was Obecní dům (the Municipal House) in Prague. The most popular memorial site was the ossuary at the Church of All Saints in Kutná Hora – Sedlec. Prague Castle was the most popular castle. The most popular museum was Forest, Game and Fishing Museum at zámek Ohrada in Hluboká nad Vltavou. June 8-9: Open Gardens Weekend

Open Gardens Weekend is an event where people have the opportunity to see usually inaccessible gardens, but also get to know their favorite parks in new ways. The public has a chance to learn about the methods of experts in green issues in this context and thereby gain a new perspective on its role and significance in life. During the weekend of open gardens, a number of parks and gardens are organizing rich accompanying programs including guided tours, children’s activities, concerts, etc.  Open Gardens Weekend is held every second weekend in June when rampant vegetation fully stand out. Visitors this weekend can enjoy the rebirth of spring in summer, not only in the Czech lands, but throughout Europe. The program also takes place in the gardens of Prague Castle. The Palace gardens under Prague Castle are situated on the southern slope of Hradcany hill and are a connection between Prague Castle and Lesser Town. The complex includes five gardens – Ledeburská zahrada, Malá Pálffyovská zahrada, and Velká Pálffyovská zahrada, Kolowratská zahrada and Malá Fürstenberská zahrada. Herbie Hancock Returning to Prague

Legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock is coming to Prague’s O2 Universum on Nov. 9, 2019. Tickets go on sale May 24 at 9 am on the Ticketmaster network. Now 79 years old, Hancock has been at the forefront of jazz for almost six decades. He was seen as a child prodigy, playing a Mozart concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of 12. He started his adult career in 1961. Hancock’s output includes 41 studio albums, 12 live albums, five soundtracks and 62 compilation albums. One of his early soundtrack efforts was Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 art film Blow Up, which helped to boost is visibility. From 1963 to ’68, he was a member of one of the most influential jazz bands of history, Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet, and one of the pioneers of the jazz avant-garde.
