British rock band The Cure are the first confirmed headlining act to perform at the Colours of Ostrava 2019 international music festival. “We couldn’t have wished for a better or more famous band for our eighteenth music festival (i.e. our ‘coming of age’ show)” says Zlata Holušová, director of the festival. “It is a tremendous honour. The Cure are legends of world music and have influenced several generations of musicians and bands. Although they are celebrating forty years of their career this year, their music will never get old.” The Cure was founded by singer and guitarist Robert Smith in Crawley, England. They had their very first performance in 1978 and have since had over 1500 concerts. Over the course of their career, the Cure have released thirteen studio albums, several concert movies, live albums and soundtracks, more than forty chart-topping singles, a few books, and a selection of their biggest hits. Under the statue of St. Wenceslas on Prague’s Wenceslas Square, a canvas construction depicting a whale skeleton was installed on Monday. It’s the same skeleton that has been hung up in the National Museum for over a hundred years. It will be displayed in the city center for about two weeks. “The main visual motif of the art piece is the whale skeleton, which is divided into three topological visual fields and interconnected by nerve fibers and special cables” explained the artist Jiří David. The art project, which is called “Do you miss the whale?” is based on the concept that the museum’s whale skeleton has not been seen by the public since 2011 when the building began renovations. According to the artist, the installation has two forms. During the day, only the skeleton of the whale is able to be seen on the canvas, but at night, the marine mammal will appear to move. “In the evening, the diode wall illuminates in the middle, and mirrors are placed in such a way that it creates the illusion that the whale’s fins are moving,” David explained. Czech Egyptologists have discovered the limestone grave of a high-ranking official from the middle of the fifth dynasty “a custodian of royal affairs” identified as Kaire, whose name had been carved into the wall at the Abusir necropolis. The Fifth Dynasty, along with the Third, Fourth and Sixth Dynasties from the Old Kingdom, dates back to between 2494 and 2345 BC. The Czech research team under the direction of archaeologist Miroslav Bárta has also discovered a halved granite sculpture. It proves that ancient Egyptians placed statues into their burial chambers, a question they have been trying to answer for years. The statue sits on a chair wearing a short dress and a wig. Kaires’ titles place him at the level of the viziers (prime ministers) of the time. The complex of Kaires extends over an area of over 500 m2, and besides the tomb itself contains several other rooms which served for the funerary cult and the ritual purification of the priests before they could enter the tomb. This holiday is always celebrated on 28 September: it is the feast day of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia, and commemorates his death in 935. Also known as ‘Czech Statehood day’, it is a national holiday in the Czech Republic and has been a public holiday since 2000. On Friday, September 28 at 5.45 pm will start the Ceremonial Unveiling of the Astronomical Clock and at 6 pm the clock will start running again. At 8.00, 9.00 and 10.00 p.m. – a spectacular projection on the Old Town Tower will be offered to the participants. On the same day, a free exhibition will feature photographs and historical artifacts from the recent repair of the Old Town Hall. The restoration cost about Kč 7.4 million. Another Kč 2 million were used for a new calendar and an apostle’s door. The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia in 2018 was one of the reasons behind the decision to repair all four facades of the tower, the astronomical clock and the chapel, including new lighting. The Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Hall on Old Town Square, whose oldest parts date to 1410, belongs among the most famous sights in Prague, along with Charles Bridge and Prague Castle. The event commemorates one of the turning points in the history of the Czech lands. Hundreds of soldiers, archers, cannoneers and horse riders from all over Europe will all meet in Prague to take place in the largest re-enactment of a battle from the Thirty Years’ War. It should resemble the original battle and it is one of the largest events of this kind in Europe. Although the Battle of White Mountain, which took place on November 8th, 1620, lasted only two hours, it had far-reaching consequences for the Czech lands. It was the beginning of the Thirty Years War and influenced the fate of Central Europe for the next 300 years. At the venue, you will find out a market with traditional handicrafts. An accompanying programme will start at 12.00 p.m. featuring fencing, training of units, juggling, music performances and more. Almost 70 men, women, and children have taken part in an extraordinary “wild swim” down the River Elbe in Kolin, 80 km from Prague, in an initiative sparked by a UK Channel swimmer, and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. The Hana Greenfield Memorial Swim was held to commemorate the life and times of one of the few survivors of the Nazi deportation of the 500 Jews of Kolin. Greenfield swam regularly in the Elbe in the 1930s before being deported to Terezin and then to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. After liberation, she moved to Britain then Israel, becoming a noted author, journalist, and educator. She helped to keep the memory of Kolin’s Jews alive, instituting an annual prize for school students to write about the town’s Jewish heritage. It took place on Sunday, August 26. The date coincided with the birthdate of legendary Kolin rabbi Dr Richard Feder, who conducted Christian as well as Jewish funerals in Terezin, where he was interned for most of the war.
