New Permanent Exhibition of Over 300 Artworks Opened at the National Gallery

The new collection covers an entire floor of the Trade Fair Palace, with 300 works purely from the collections of the National Gallery and a cross-section of domestic work spanning eight decades. The new permanent exhibition entitled 1939-2021: The End of the Black and White Era, aims to show visitors how the perception of artistic quality in the Czech Republic has changed over time. Within the collection, several types of creative expression exist side by side illustrating that art serves primarily as a testimony to the times. The exhibition begins in 1939, drawing the visitor into the wartime art of Emil Filla, Jan Kotík, Josef Čapek, Karel Kotrba, and the artists of Group 42. The collection continues through the equally dark period of totalitarianism, in which a number of artistic movements flourished despite the suppression of the creative spirit. “The title, ‘The End of the Black and White Era’ can carry many connotations. It is also a slogan summing up our approach. We try to go beyond simple evaluation criteria based on opposites. Heydrich Assassination Took Place 81 Years Ago

On the morning of May 27, 1942, around 10:30, two men, Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, waited in the sharp bend of a road near the Bulovka hospital in Prague 8. Bicycles parked nearby for an escape and one wearing a long coat to conceal his machine gun. These men were waiting to ambush one of the key men of the Third Reich, the butcher of Prague, Reinhard Heydrich. Operation Anthropoid Planned by British special operations and supported by the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, the preparation for Heydrich’s assassination called Operation Anthropoid involved officers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš as the major players. They were airlifted from Great Britain to Czechoslovakia along with seven other Czech soldiers in December of 1941. After scratching plans to kill Heydrich on a train and in his car in a forest, the plan was to attack him at a sharp turn in the Libeň district of Prague on his way from his home in Panenské Březany. Czech “Night of Churches” Lets You See Inside More Than 1700 Sacred Spaces

On June 3 and 4, thousands of people will descend on more than 1,700 churches and chapels throughout the Czech Republic during the Night of Churches (Noc kostelů). In Prague alone, it will be possible to visit 155 churches, temples and chapels. The theme of this year’s event is baptism and the organisers want to reflect not only its ritual but also the places, objects, texts or traditions associated with the ritual. This event is another opportunity to invite the widest possible audience into churches to become acquainted with Christianity through music, art, and experience in an evening and nighttime atmosphere. Among the newly opened sites will be the Church of St. Peter and Paul which is located in the protected zone of the Želivka dam or the newly built Church of Christ the Saviour in Prague’s district of Barrandov. Guided tours, concerts, and theater performances will facilitate the occasion. Some portions of churches normally closed to the public will be open, for example, the organ loft, the sacristy, towers, crypts, and monastic gardens. How The Defenestration Of Prague Helped Spark The Thirty Years’ War

Tempers ran hot in Bohemia on May 23, 1618. Then, the Defenestration of Prague saw three Catholic officials defenestrated, or tossed from a window, by local Protestants. Thanks to the grace of God or a pile of manure — depending on who you asked — the officials survived. But the aftermath was catastrophic. The Defenestration of Prague was more than a spat between two religious sects. It encapsulated long-held and mounting tensions between Catholics and Protestants in Europe. What’s more, its bloody aftermath would lead to the Thirty Years’ War, in which more than eight million people lost their lives to violence and famine. Bavarian Symphony Orchestra to Perform in Prague

The appearance of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra headed by Daniel Harding promises to be one of the highlights of the 78th edition of the Prague Spring. One of the world’s finest orchestras and its top-flight conductor will perform Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 7, whose premiere was held in Prague in 1908. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra first performed at the Prague Spring in 1987 under conductor Sir Colin Davis. Known for its supreme interpretations, the ensemble was shaped in the years 1961–1979 by Czech conductor in exile Rafael Kubelík, who recorded the complete Mahler symphonies with the orchestra, an achievement celebrated to this day. After Kubelík’s departure Sir Colin Davis stood at the helm for almost ten years, and in the period 1993–2002 they were led by Lorin Maazel. From 2003 until his death in December 2019 the orchestra was headed by Mariss Jansons. From the 2022/23 season onwards the post of Chief Conductor will be assumed by Sir Simon Rattle, who is already working closely with the orchestra at this time. Metronome Prague —More than Music, it’s Now a Music & Arts Fair

The Metronome Festival has built a reputation as the veritable summer music happening in Prague by bringing internationally top-names along with the best of local talent across musical genres for four evenings and three full days in June. Beginning the 21st with two evening concerts, altogether there are 66 artists-groups on the program. Then from the 22-24th there is an accompanying program making it a Music & Arts Fair with art exhibits, installations, workshops, film and theatre productions, and special attractions. May 20: Celebrate Prague’s Annual “Pink May” – Festival of Rosé Wines

Every year in May, the season of Moravian and Czech rosé wines traditionally culminates. And, it is tied with quite a few “pink” events, which includes the Pink May the degustation festival of rosé wines and clarets. The festival is a wonderful platform for winemakers to present their wines. You can make the most of the gastronomic open-air event, which would take place on Saturday, May 20, from 10.00am to 9.00pm at Náplavka (Rašín embankment). Visitors can expect a total of 44 stalls, 25 winemakers, rosé wine tasting, claret tastings, typical food, and rich accompanying programme. “The degustation set is made up of a 0.35l glass made from Czech glass from Crystalex (in Nový Bor), a printed catalogue with an overview of wineries and other information and a pen to make notes. You can buy this set at the festival for 100,- Kč. How an Armenian Opened the First Coffeehouse in Prague

Do you ever wonder where the first cup of coffee was in Prague, or how it even got there? The first Europeans to get acquainted with coffee were mostly travelers. The first traveler from the Czech lands to mention coffee was Kryštof Harant of Polžice and Bezdružice (Czech: Kryštof Harant z Polžic a Bezdružic, 1564 – June 21, 1621). He was a Czech nobleman, traveler, humanist, soldier, writer, and composer. He joined the Protestant Bohemian Revolt in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown against the House of Habsburg that led to Thirty Years’ War. He discovered coffee on his journey to Constantinople in 1598.
