Czech Senate Commemorates 85th Anniversary of Signing of Munich Agreement

The Czech Senate commemorated the 85th anniversary of the signing of the Munich Agreement on Friday, with Senate President Miloš Vystrčil and his predecessors Petr Pithart and Přemysl Sobotka giving speeches. When Germany, France, Britain and Italy signed the Munich Agreement in the early hours of September 30, 1938, the Nazis took over Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland, where mostly ethnic Germans lived along the Czech borders. The treaty also enabled Germany to take over Czechoslovakia, which they did officially on March 15, 1939. Notably, Czechoslovakia was not represented at the conference that decided that country’s fate. The agreement is viewed in hindsight as a failed attempt to avoid war with Nazi Germany. The Sudeten Germans speak out After World War I, borders had been drawn within the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, and these borders had triggered resentment and local conflicts. The German minority in post-World War I Czechoslovakia had yearned to become independent, not satisfied with its status in Czechoslovakia between the wars. When Germany annexed the Sudetenland, the majority of the 3.5 million Germans living there were ecstatic. Anniversary: Church of St. Ludmila Has Dominated Vinohrady for 130 Years

The three-aisle basilica which was built using the plans of the architect Josef Mocker features two 60 metre-high towers with an opulent staircase. It is a typical North German Neo-Gothic church and it has been 130 years since its consecration on 8th October. The church was consecrated roughly five years after its construction work started. Its foundation stone was laid down on 25 November 1888. The building came into existence fairly quickly and was financed by the Vinohrady town itself. Its importance increased after the visit of the emperor Franz Joseph I and the Viennese administration office decided to contribute to its construction as well. The Association for Church of St. Ludmila at Královské Vinohrady also provided a great support throughout. The paintings and ornaments on the walls are by Johann Jobst. The interior and exterior artwork was made by famous artists of the times such as sculptors Josef Václav Myslbek, František Hergessel, and Antonín Procházka, or painters František Ženíšek and Adolf Liebscher. Signal Festival to Light Up the Galleries: Seven Venues Will Present Unique Installations!

The eleventh edition of Signal Festival will present the largest-ever gallery zone at seven Prague venues, prepared by a new curatorial team led by audiovisual artist Pavel Mrkus. The unique installations will focus primarily on exploring the boundaries of audiovisual and digital art using new technologies such as AR, 3D scanning technology or original sound and light systems. During the four days of the festival, it will feature unique works by Mexican-Canadian multimedia artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Polish creative studio Ksawery Komputery and Spanish audiovisual collective Playmodes, among others. This year, Signal will once again build on its successful collaborations with Laterna Magika and Kunsthalle Praha and celebrate its centenary together with Czech Radio. Visitors can explore the full programme of the gallery zone with a Signal Plus ticket, while Signal VIP allows them to visit the gallery privately, without queuing or waiting. On Saturday 7 October 2023 from 19:00, Smíchov Embankment will be transformed into a lively Balkan village. The charm of Eastern Europe will be brought by the orchestra of Laco Deczi and Sinša Stanković, and the gypsy element will be complemented by Vojta Lavička’s band. Lunchmeat Festival 2023—Refinement Meets Brutality in Advanced Electronica & New Media

The Lunchmeat Festival returns with its Autumn program from September 25th – 30th. Dedicated to electronica with an emphasis on visual and musical artists in collaboration, Lunchmeat brings the highest level of experimental digital artists collaborating with musicians/producers/DJs annually. Lunchmeat Festival includes a symposium, and it is spread out in venues around Prague, for a most local flavor. While this is an international festival with mostly multi-nationality collaborations, this year’s program is de-emphasizing headliners, for a more helpful promotion and support of the local artist community. The musical programming has been refined for this year’s festival, and that said, some visiting artists are contributing to a noticeable shift to a dreamier side, for instance Marina Herlop from Catalonia, as a classically-trained, experimental pianist and vocalist. Her 2022 album “Pripyat” is refreshing (singing in an imagined language); her voice is influenced by Bjorn, Laurie Anderson, and possibly even the Bulgarian Woman’s Choir, but uniquely as a solo project (thanks to vocal manipulation/digital production), she makes a wondrous sea of dreams in sound. September 22-24: Bohemian Burlesque Festival in Prague

The Bohemian Burlesque Festival, now in its seventh edition, stands as the largest burlesque event in the Czech Republic. As one of the pioneers of this genre in the Czech Republic, the production company Bohemian Burlesque is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. To mark this milestone, they are presenting the seventh edition of the country’s largest burlesque event, the Bohemian Burlesque Festival. The festival spans from September 20th to September 24th, taking place in three cities and featuring five events. Following the opening event in Ostrava, the festival heads to Brno for its traditional Thursday evening at the Cabaret des Péches. On Friday, the production moves to Prague for a gala evening in the new space of the historic Rokoko Theatre. Saturday, September 23rd, is packed with excitement as the festival offers two events. From 12 to 6 p.m., visitors can explore the Bohemian Market, where numerous vendors will showcase vintage and retro fashion and accessories, along with a retro clothing bazaar. Oscars 2024: Czech Republic Selects “Brothers” as Oscar Candidate

Tomáš Mašín’s Brothers / Bratři has been selected as the Czech Republic‘s candidate for the 96th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award in the Best International Feature Film category.  The film is a co-production between the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia. The film was chosen by the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA), which is also responsible for the Czech Lion Film Awards. Twelve feature films and documentaries were submitted. The drama tells one of the greatest stories of the Cold War, the story of the Mašín brothers, who decided to leave communist Czechoslovakia with arms in their hands. Marek Epstein penned the script and the main roles are played by Oskar Hes, Jan Nedbal, Adam Ernest, Matyáš Řezníček, Antonín Mašek, Matěj Hádek and Tatiana Dyková Vilhelmová. FilmBrigade produced the film in coproduction with Rohfilm Productions and PubRes, with support from the Czech Film Fund, the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, the Czech Television and Eurimages. Brothers will premiere on the 70th anniversary of the escape of the Mašín brothers behind the Iron Curtain, with release in Czech cinemas on 26 October 2023. The Yellow Affair is handling the sales.

“Some Like it Czech” Kicks Off the Third Season of Czech Movies with English Subs

After two successful seasons, the screening series “Some Like It Czech” is ready to get back on track with the riveting comedy OWNERS, a humorous portrayal of Czech contemporary society. Photo Exhibition “Images of Another Europe 1985-1989” to Open on September 14

In the last few years of the Cold War, from 1985 to 1989, an inspired young man decided to prove to the world that Europe, despite the political differences that kept it divided in two, was and remains one entity. With a small camera that he keeps close to his heart, Constantin Pittas will scan the then-divided Europe, capturing countless hundreds of films the true face of the European citizen. It records raw emotions of everyday people in Western and Eastern countries, as they are reflected through their gaze, eventually managing to record history itself. The fall of the Berlin Wall will find him to be a witness in the city of Berlin and there, he will make the mindless decision to drop his project and leave the material of the photographs for a whole 25 years in a storage room. Ecstasy, When Czech Cinema Scandalized the World

“In the garden of the Excelsior that evening, you could hear the breath of the extremely attentive spectators, you felt a thrill running through the audience”. These words, written by the young Michelangelo Antonioni as a critic at the second Venice Film Festival, in 1934, give us a hint of the tremendous impact of Extase (Ecstasy), written and directed by Prague-born director Gustav Machatý, during that historic premiere. Dubbed a “pornographic film” by the Osservatore Romano (the daily newspaper of Vatican City State), it even aroused Mussolini’s attention, to the extent that Il Duce actually requested a private screening. Despite the Pope’s attempts to block it, it was screened on 7 August 1934 and the Czechoslovak director was rewarded with the Venice City Cup. According to a public survey, Extase was considered the best foreign film and Machatý the best director. A scandalous film, now considered a turning point in the direction of international cinema, which also marked the beginning of the career of the leading lady, Hedy Lamarr, later launched in Hollywood under the label of “the most beautiful woman in the world”.
