Meet L. Hainz, the Company Behind the Renovation of the Prague Astronomical Clock

Tower clocks are a fundamental part of Prague’s landscape, bringing millions of tourists from all over the world to visit attractions such as the famed Astronomical Clock (Pražský Orloj). Did you know who is behind the restoration of most of these clocks? L. Hainz is a family business founded in 1836 by Ludvík Hainz, a watchmaker from Prague. The company has been responsible for the renovation and maintenance of roughly 80 clocks in the city, including those in St. Vitus Cathedral (Katedrála sv. Víta), St. Nicholas Church (Kostel sv. Mikuláše), Klementinum and the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí). L. Hainz has also produced and repaired over 300 antique clocks for town halls, churches, and monuments around Europe using 19th-century-old techniques. During the Austro-Hungarian Empire and up until the Second World War, L. Hainz was considered the leading maker of chronometers and watches in Prague. The business was later confiscated by the communist regime that also incarcerated some members of the family. The company was then returned to the heirs of the original owners in the 1990s. L. Senate Approved June 25 as Officially “Day of Occupation Troops’ Departure”

The Czech senate officially approved the proposal to designate June 25 as the official “Day of departure of occupying forces” (Den odchodu okupačních vojsk) on Wednesday.  The proposal was made 30 years after the then president of Czechoslovakia, Václav Havel, issued the “Order for the departure of Soviet armed forces from the territory of Czechoslovakia” (Rozkaz k odchodu sovětských vojsk z území ČSFR). However, the day will also serve to commemorate the withdrawals of other occupying armies in the preceding history of the Czech lands. Only the President’s signature was required for the bill to enter into force. The name of the new commemorative date does not specify the affiliation of the occupation troops, so it symbolizes the end of all the occupations that the Czech people have experienced. However, the reference to the USSR is quite obvious: the initiative arose last year during the 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Czechoslovakia. Moreover, on June 25, 1991, was signed in Prague the protocol for the completion of this procedure. The plane with the last Soviet soldier left Czechoslovakia on June 27. Kunsthalle Praha: The Electric New Addition to Prague’s Art Scene

Housed in a former electrical substation, Kunsthalle Praha is sparking new creative energy in the Czech capital. Its striking inaugural group show celebrates 100 years of electricity in art. Kunsthalle Praha, a major new not-for-profit arts and culture organisation has opened its doors to the public in the Czech capital. The building housing the new institution began as the Zenger Electrical Substation in the 1930s, generating electricity for the city’s tram and trolleybus network. The station became defunct as technology evolved, but was acquired by the Pudil Family Foundation in 2015 with the intention of giving the building a new life as Kunsthalle Praha. The institution focuses on 20th-century and contemporary Czech and international art and will function as an ‘open meeting point’ where art lives but also engages a wide audience. Czech architecture studio Schindler Seko was tasked with reimagining the building as an art destination, which now comprises three large galleries, a bistro, a café and an extensive retail space. Why Czechs Burn Witches on April 30th

April 30th is an exciting day for Czechs of all ages who gather by fire and celebrate the arrival of spring. Witch burning (Čarodejnice), also known as the night of the witches, stems from an ancient tradition. There are many locations where this is celebrated and some involve a maypole: a tall wooden pole popular to dance around at various traditional European festivals. Outside of folk customs witch-burning night is also the second-largest satanic holiday. While it acts as the largest Sabbath for Satanic cults, in the Czech Republic it’s considered a regular and harmless family holiday. Historically, the night of April 30th has been considered magical and was originally celebrated at midnight. Like most ancient festivities, the main purpose of the event was to celebrate fertility. People also believed that on this night witches would gather together. To protect themselves from the witches, evil spirits, and demons in general, people lit fires on elevated grounds. Cimrman English Theatre: The Greatest Czech Demystified

In the beginning, was the word, and the word was Cimrman. It was in 2013 that Emilie Machalová, a director, uttered it to her friend Brian Stewart, a Prague-based British actor. She described Cimrman as the go-to standard for understanding Czech culture: If Brian (albeit performing under the pseudonym Ben Bradshaw) really wanted to grasp our humour, then getting to know the legendary Cimrman was a must. Brian was open to the idea. They watched the original recording of Záskok (The Stand-In) from 1994, and the British actor was surprised to find that despite not understanding much Czech, he had a lot of fun. They both surmised that if you can ‘get’ comedy without understanding the language, you must be dealing with quite extraordinary work, capable of reaching out across cultures; after a short discussion, they agreed to join forces, to craft an English translation. Czech Association Wants to Add Czech Beer Culture to UNESCO List

The Czech Association of Breweries and Malthouses is trying to get Czech beer culture added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the head of the association František Šámal announced on Friday.  The Czech-Moravian Association of Mini-Brewers has also joined the initiative. Thus far, the association has proposed listing Czech beer culture on the regional level. The next step will be to secure a listing on the national level. “I have been active in the brewing industry for a relatively long time and I believe that our beer culture will eventually be included on the UNESCO list. However, there is still a long way to go. If all goes well, the entry at a national level could take place at the turn of next year and at the global level in 2026,” said Šámal. In the application, the Association of Breweries and Malthouses states that “the Czech beer is a symbol of national pride”. You Can Now Buy the Print Version of the New Mural in Support of Ukraine

Czech street art artist Dmitrij Proškin (ChemiS) launched a charitable sale of printouts of his last mural. The mural features a young girl sheltering iconic soft toy characters of various nations, including the USA’s Mickey Mouse, France’s Obelix, the Czech Republic’s Little Mole, the German’s bee Maya, Polish Leolek and Bolek, Finnish Moomins, French Obelix, and the British Gromit, under a Ukrainian flag. The message, Proskin says, is that Ukraine is currently protecting the rest of the world from “disaster.” The print in A3+ format with the autograph of the author costs 2500 CZK. All the money raised will be used to help Ukrainian children. The author will choose a specific charity program in the next weeks. To purchase the print you need to write to the artist through personal messages on Facebook or Instagram. March 29, 1990. Czechoslovakia and a Matter of a Hyphen

When the Czecho-Slovak Republic was established in 1918 it was spelled with the hyphen, but in 1921 the government renamed the country Czechoslovakia. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, the country was known as the Czechoslovak Republic (from the end of World War II to 1960) and the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (from 1960 until the fall of communism nearly three decades later). Following the Velvet Revolution and the collapse of communist rule at the end of 1989, the country initially moved towards reinstating its hyphen-less interwar name: “Czechoslovakia” or “the Czechoslovak Republic”. But Slovaks rejected the solution on the grounds it gave more importance to the Czechs and, calling for greater equality within the federation, demanded the hyphen be reinstated. The “Great Hyphen Debate” erupted in Czechoslovakia’s Parliament on March 29, 1990. Deputies rejected various proposals for a name to replace the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in the post-communist era. Slovak insistence on their national identity being enshrined in a hyphenated form of Czecho-Slovakia led to 12 hours of discussion and backroom discussion before the final formula was agreed. Prague Opens a Self-Service Library in a Shopping Centre

Prague City reported that the Municipal Library (MKP) has opened a completely self-service library kiosk in Černý Most Centre.  According to the capital, the new kiosk is the first of its kind in the country and is the result of MKP’s work to introduce RFID technology to its services. The library’s new self-service branch will have longer working hours, operating from 9 am to 9 pm every day. During these times, readers can sit in the 29-square-metre space, leaf through texts, and borrow or return books. At the moment, the kiosk has a collection featuring over 1,000 titles, which are predominantly adult fiction, children’s books, and popular science literature. Although one can enter the space, select a title, and borrow a book all on their own, they can still access support when they need it. More specifically, the City of Prague explains that the human element will still be necessary as librarians will need to look after the collection and the readers.
