The National Theatre of Prague Presents: Der Ferne Klang

The National Theatre of Prague presents Der Ferne Klang, an opera by Franz Schreker. Though several of Franz Schreker’s nine completed operas were hugely fashionable in his lifetime, none has a secure place in the repertory nowadays. The best known of them was the second to be composed, Der Ferne Klang, whose first performance in 1912 established Schreker alongside Strauss and Schoenberg as one of the leading modernists of his generation. Schreker wrote his own libretto for Der Ferne Klang; it’s the story of an aspiring composer, Fritz, who sacrifices his personal happiness and that of his lover Grete in his lifelong search for the “distant sound” of the opera’s title that he hears within himself. Its mix of eroticism and fairytale magic, combined with a musical style that manages to be both ripely romantic and chromatically expressionist in a score crammed with iridescent orchestral textures, provided the template for the success of several of Schreker’s later operas. National Theatre in Prague Removes Tchaikovsky Performance Over Ukraine Conflict

The National Theatre removed the opera The Tsarina’s Slippers by Petr Ilyich Tchaikovsky from the planned repertoire. The information appeared in an internal letter from the head of the opera Per Boy Hansen, explaining that “the Russian aggression in Ukraine and the current Russian war crimes are inadmissible.” “In the current situation, we consider it completely inappropriate to perform Tchaikovsky’s opera The Tsarina’s Slippers and to provide pro-Putin propaganda with any possibility of subsequently exploiting artistic interests to justify criminal intentions in the slightest,” writes the letter addressed to ND internal staff Hansen. According to National Theater spokesperson Tomáš Staňk, the letter was intended only for internal staff. “The change in the dramaturgical program, which has not yet been intended for publication, is an internal matter of the National Theatre,” he adds. New Application Reveals the Architectural History of Prague

Users can learn more about the construction and architects of the capital’s buildings and monuments. Last week, the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) unveiled an application with a detailed map of the Czech capital’s historic centre. This map, according to IPR, was developed following an architectural and urban analysis of the city’s monument reserve and contains all the information about its architectural history. Art for Ukraine: Prague Galleries Join Forces for Contemporary Art Auction

The Art for Ukraine contemporary art auction is being jointly organized by four Prague galleries: Bold gallery, Trafo Gallery, the Chemistry gallery, and DOX centre for contemporary art. The auction of works by more than 100 contemporary artists will take place on 19 March 2022, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the SOS Ukraine collection organized by Clověk v Tísni (People in Need). Prague Revealed to be Most ‘Culturally Enriched’ City in Europe

Prague has been named the most “culturally enriched” city in Europe. Amsterdam, came second, while Dublin took third place. The study completed by Uswitch looked at how many museums, theatres, landmarks and cultural tours each city had per 100,000 residents. Each city was then given a score ranked out of 10. Eva Zaoralová, a popular film critic and former director of Karlovy Vary IFF, sadly passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2022. “R.I.P. Renovation of Prague’s Clam-Gallas Palace Near Completion

It will become fully accessible to the public this summer. After three years of conducting major repairs, Prague is close to completing the renovation of the Baroque Clam-Gallas Palace. According to the Czech capital’s website, the palace once housed the highest social classes of the Viennese court, with composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven reportedly having performed there.
