The planetarium in Prague is currently equipped with the digital projection system SkySkan, which was acquired in 2009 with 4K image quality. This projection system had an estimated life of about 10,000 hours of operation and reached its limit in 2019. This year, there was a serious failure of the projectors’ optical elements. The repair was demanding due to the unavailability of parts since projectors of this type are no longer produced. The repair managed to extend the life of the projector by approximately 2 to 3 years, and the end of life was further delayed by limited operation during the pandemic. The Prague Planetarium still projects on the original dome built in 1958, which is not perfectly spherical, which may cause deformation of the projected image. “We want to inspire children and arouse their interest in new technologies, science, and research. Next Friday, Jun 10, the Night of Churches will be taking place. In Prague alone, more than 15o sacred places will be open to the public where visitors can take guided tours and attend concerts and lectures. The seventh annual Praha žije hudbou festival brings live music to the streets and squares across the city on June 3 and 4. Praha Žije Hudbou is a street art festival whose aim is to present street art to the public and support the idea of busking. Dozens of places in Prague will transform into stages, on which will perform popular Czech musicians, theatre ensembles, acrobats and others. The enduring appeal and attractiveness of the “golden nineties”, which seem to have kept the professional and wider cultural public, movers and shakers, and observers of the art scene interested to this day, is one of the reasons for creating the Heroin Crystal exhibition project. As both a participant and witness, Olga Malá initiated, therefore, the Heroin Crystal exhibition, which maps the activities of the Prague City Gallery associated with artists of the 1990s generation in the years 1994–2002. The exhibition is running until August 28th, 2022. The period the exhibition focuses on is defined at the beginning of 1994, the first year of the Zvon ’94 Biennial of Young Art and at the end by its “institutional conclusion” in 2002, which saw the end of the long-term exhibition of artists of the 1990s generation, Contemporary Collection – Czech Art in the ’90s, that was featured in the basement of the Golden Ring House for four years (1998–2002). Thirty-three films comprise the eclectic lineup for the 56th Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, the programming team led by the artistic director Karel Och revealed Tuesday. The selection includes 27 world premieres, three international premieres, and three European premieres, covering five continents. In addition to the Crystal Globe Competition and Special Screenings section, KVIFF’s new competition, Proxima, will make its debut in this year’s edition. Proxima aims to be “an inclusive space for pictures by young filmmakers and renowned auteurs alike, presenting bold works that defy categorization,” the festival said. The Colours of Ostrava International Music Festival is in its 19th edition for four days and four nights. And after two years of cancelling the festival, Colours of Ostrava returns to form this summer. Since Colours places so much emphasis on inviting musical artists with an international flavor, and across genres, it was impossible to do it right with the ever-shifting travel restrictions and rules accordingly. Some headliners for this year were promised for either the past one or two years, like The Killers, Twenty-One Pilots, Franz Ferdinand, LP and Martin Garrix. Classical Music at Werich’s is a festival of outdoor chamber music recitals and concerts taking place from May 31 to 13 September 2022, always at 7 p.m., in the Werich Villa Garden on Kampa Island. The second edition of the classical music cycle is performed by exceptional and talented young artists in the Werich Villa garden – the former home of the incomparable actor, philosopher, and writer Jan Werich. For the first time with international guests, an accompanying program for children and “Echoes”, i.e. concerts of the Prague programs in selected locations in the Czech Republic – in the “Horácké divadlo” theatre in Jihlava and the Schwarzenberg Tomb in Třeboň. Top Gun: Maverick, a long-awaited movie from the aviation world, has a significant Czech footprint. Czech Aero L-39s Albatros jet trainer aircraft, produced by AERO Vodochody, were involved in the filming and training of the actors. As a multi-purpose aircraft designed for basic, advanced, and combat flight training, the L-39 was used by the Top Gun: Maverick filmmakers to give the actors a taste of jet flying before getting into the cockpit of a F/A-18 Hornet fighter. Most of the breathtaking flight footage was shot in Cinejet’s specially modified L-39 aircraft. The nose of this aircraft is fitted with a gyrostabilized SHOTOVER F1 RUSH camera system designed for filming aircraft at high speeds of up to 650 km/h and forces of up to 3G. It is the first aircraft of its kind in the world. No Czech pilot was involved in the filming of Top Gun: Maverick. It was a different case during the filming of another blockbuster, the “Bond” film Tomorrow Never Dies, in 1997. One of the leading personalities of contemporary European theatre, Angélica Liddell, is coming to Prague on June 9 and 10 with her latest production, which was premiered last year at the Festival d’Avignon. There is nothing in contemporary theater quite like an Angélica Liddell monologue. The Spanish director and performer, who has crafted her share of monumental productions over the past three decades, pushes herself to grating, visceral extremes onstage. In her productions, she always deals with autobiographical themes, for which she seeks a metaphorical framework. This time, she combines the story of the “divine bullfighter” Juan Belmonte and the music of Richard Wagner to create her own theatrical language. “It‘s a history of theatre and a history of my roots,” says Angélica about Liebestod. “Liebestod” was inspired by the Spanish tradition of bullfighting, and especially by Juan Belmonte, an innovative bullfighter who died in 1962. Liddell sees a connection between his art form and her own: “Belmonte said that what frees us from death is actually longing for it,” she said, comparing it to a poet’s “death wish.” Her take on theater history is certainly idiosyncratic. Post-punk, hyperpop, rap, R&B, and a fusion of electronic music and jazz – all ofthat will be a part of this year’s United Islands of Europe which will showcase new faces of the music scene from the Czech Republic, its neighbours, but also from Eastern Europe and overseas, right in Prague.
