The Czech Republic currently has stored 13 million daily rations of food in warehouses, which would cover consumption for about 1.3 days in the case of an emergency, while an increase in food stocks for 15 days would cost up to CZK 12 billion, Pavel Švagr, chairman of The Administration of State Material Reserves (SSHR). According to Švagr, the previous government decided to increase food stocks from 3 to 15 days at the end of last year. “The planned 15 days is not an ambition for next year,” Švagr warned. “Last year, there was an agreement that we should introduce those 15 days in the next 15 years,” he added. The Association of Czech Beer Brewers has announced that the price of beer will see another significant increase in June due to the soaring costs of energy and barley. Of the 9,582 companies in the Czech Republic with Russian ownership, dozens have changed their citizenship since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine to avoid sanctions or outflow of clients. As news site Seznam Zprávy reported, 154 owners of Russian companies changed their citizenship since the outbreak of the conflict. Most of them, 63%, decided to get Czech citizenship. The rest took British, Cyprus, Azerbaijan and Romanian citizenships. Disagreement with the Russian regime led by Russian President Vladimir Putin is among the reasons for change. The Czech government wanting to prevent Russian business people from accessing financing from Czech banks and public budgets is another. “It (the change of citizenship) may be an attempt by company owners to circumvent sanctions,” said Petra Štěpánová, an expert from Dun & Bradstreet corporation that analysed the companies with Russian owners. According to Czech Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura, the Czech Republic has frozen almost €41 million worth of Russian assets in the country. If these properties are identified as possible support for Russia’s war crimes, confiscation of these assets is planned in the future. An amendment to the law on the residence of Ukrainian refugees in Czechia will explicitly reject the temporary protection for the citizens of the European Union, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Vít Rakušan told a press conference on Wednesday. The Czech government proposes implementing measures which will extend the time limit for processing an application for temporary asylum to 60 days, but will reduce the time a refugee has to report a change of residence from 15 days to just 3. Applicants for temporary refuge in Czechia for Ukrainians will have to prove that they have secured accommodation if they do not have housing provided by a regional assistance center. The amendment also reduces the refugee’s entitlement to health insurance to 180 days — the change affects people aged 18-65 and the period of entitlement shall apply from the date on which they received temporary protection status. According to Rakušan, the changes are necessary because of procedural reasons. The extension of the time for processing the application comes because the state is now checking the stamps on crossing the border from Ukraine into the Schengen area. The state will not pay the humanitarian benefit after the approval of the proposal in cases...
