More than one million foreigners are currently living in the Czech Republic, marking a significant increase over the last ten years. This represents approximately 10% of the country’s population, according to the Czech Statistical Office. The number of foreigners has doubled compared to 2013, when roughly 500,000 were registered. The majority of immigrants come from Ukraine, Slovakia, and Vietnam. Together, these groups make up over half of the total foreign population in Czechia. The largest increase has been among Ukrainians, partly due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which prompted many to seek refuge in the country. The number of Slovaks living in the Czech Republic has also risen steadily. Their close cultural ties, shared history, and lack of a language barrier continue to make the Czech Republic an attractive destination for Slovak nationals. The Vietnamese community remains the third-largest group, maintaining a strong presence due to long-standing migration ties dating back to the 20th century. Key Reasons for the Growth The rise in foreign residents is closely tied to economic opportunities and improved living standards in the Czech Republic. Many foreigners relocate for employment, as the country has a low unemployment rate and a growing demand for labor in...
TasteAtlas has unveiled the planet’s worst-rated foods, based on 600,000 ratings. Topping the list is Blodplat, a dish traditional to Sweden and Finnish Lapland of rye or barley flour and (wait for it) animal blood dumplings, which is usually served as a side dish to fried bacon, pork, butter and lingonberry jam. Interesting. In second place was bocadillo de sardinas, a sardine sandwich native to Spain. Surprisingly, despite Spain being the land of paella, croquettes, tapas and churros, three Spanish dishes are included in the top 10: angulas a la cazuela is a Basque Country dish of spicy eels, and faves a la Catalana is broad beans cooked in stock and served with blood sausage. Three Czech dishes appear on this list, offering a perspective on how certain traditional recipes are perceived beyond their home country. Czech bread soup (Chlebová polévka): This simple bread soup is a traditional Czech dish prepared with a combination of stale bread, water, onions, and a variety of spices. The more refined versions are occasionally thickened with eggs and may incorporate flavorful broths or various root vegetables. Characterized by its rustic appeal and thick consistency, chlebová polévka is a common home-cooked dish that is traditionally...
Chronic issues with data connectivity and mobile signals on trains in the Czech Republic are set to receive an unconventional solution. Last autumn, mobile signal repeaters and window modifications were introduced in an attempt to improve connectivity. While these changes were expected to make a significant difference this year, Czech Railways has now announced an additional measure: satellite-based internet. According to HN, testing is expected to begin in early spring, likely in February. “We are using technology directly provided by Starlink, negotiating with them without intermediaries. Our costs will only cover partial modifications to the trains.” This new system will feature a significantly larger and more powerful terminal compared to the one used by Ukrainian soldiers on the frontlines. The terminal, measuring 56 by 63 centimeters, will be installed on the roof of each train. Starlink is a satellite constellation system that aims to deliver global internet coverage. This system is ideally suited for rural and geographically isolated areas where internet connectivity is unreliable or nonexistent. The testing in Europe will be particularly significant for the manufacturers. In the United States, Starlink’s deployment focuses mainly on independent traction, such as diesel trains that don’t run on electric power lines. A SpaceX initiative...
A significant cold snap is approaching the Czech Republic, with meteorologists predicting a sharp drop in temperatures next week. On Monday, temperatures will dip to -2 to -6 °C. Daily highs are not expected to exceed -3 to 1 °C, and the snow cover could reach around -9 °C. The bitterly cold weather is not exclusive to the Czech Republic, with the German website The Weather Channel warning that Monday night could be the coldest of the entire winter so far for parts of central Europe. Temperatures of up to -15 degrees, and even -20 degrees in some mountainous areas, are expected. However, Tuesday will bring an even greater drop in temperature. Lowest night temperatures are predicted to be -5 to -10 °C, with the snow cover reaching around -12 °C. Daytime highs will struggle to climb above -3 to +1 °C, with the southwestern half of Bohemia potentially seeing up to +3 °C. Meteorologists attribute this cold front to a high-pressure system spreading from western to central Europe, which will also lead to the passage of a cold front through the country on Tuesday evening. However, the extreme cold is not expected to last long in the Czech Republic....

The Czech Republic boasts one of the world’s strongest passports, ranking fifth in the 2024 Global Passport Index. Arton Capital’s annual index evaluates the freedom of travel offered by passports, highlighting both practical and symbolic measures of global mobility. The Value of a Strong Passport A strong passport represents freedom and opportunity, enabling holders to travel to most countries without the need for visas. In contrast, weaker passports reflect limited travel options and significant barriers. The Global Passport Index examines travel freedom and considers geopolitical, economic, and social factors. Czech citizens can travel visa-free to 126 countries, obtain visas on arrival in 50, and need advance visas for only 22 destinations. This positions the Czech passport alongside Croatia and Estonia, ahead of countries like Slovenia, Liechtenstein, Japan, and Canada. Top Performers and Shifting Trends For the fourth consecutive year, the United Arab Emirates leads the rankings, granting its citizens visa-free access to 133 countries. This achievement stems from proactive diplomacy and rapid economic modernization. European nations dominate the top 20, with Spain securing second place and Germany tied with Finland and France for third. However, the United Kingdom and the United States have both experienced significant declines. The UK passport’s power...

On January 9th, 1890, Karel Čapek was born in the Czech city of Malé Svatoňovice. Today, as we mark the anniversary of his birth, we reflect not only on his literary brilliance but on his profound cultural significance to the Czech people and the wider world. Čapek, renowned for his novels, plays, essays, and visionary thinking, was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century European literature. His works, ranging from science fiction to political commentary, have left an indelible mark on Czech cultural identity and continue to resonate globally. Čapek’s writing stands out for its exploration of ideas and the human condition. Born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he lived through tumultuous political shifts, including World War I, the rise of fascism, and the onset of World War II. These experiences shaped much of his work, which developed into issues of morality, technology, war, and human rights. Unlike many of his contemporaries, who focused on narrative alone, Čapek’s writing was often deeply philosophical, addressing the social and political challenges of his time. His work remains a window into the Czech psyche, reflecting both the nation’s struggle for independence and its broader quest for dignity in an often hostile world. Čapek’s...
Moving abroad and starting fresh in a new country requires significant courage and determination. Finding employment in a foreign environment can be challenging, but some countries are more welcoming to expats—people living outside their native country—than others. According to a survey by the InterNations platform, Denmark has emerged as the best destination for foreign workers. The Czech Republic, meanwhile, secured 15th place out of 53 countries in the ranking. The survey assessed various factors including the availability of jobs, wages, and, crucially, work-life balance—the equilibrium between professional and personal life. As reported by the Daily Mail, Denmark topped the list, with expats praising the country’s favorable conditions. “The work-life balance is excellent, and taking five to six weeks of vacation is the norm,” shared one Australian expat in the survey. A significant 84 percent of respondents expressed satisfaction with their work-life balance in Denmark, while only one percent fewer highlighted working hours as a concern. About two-thirds of those surveyed also mentioned the opportunity to work remotely on a part-time basis. However, only 60 percent of expats felt they were fairly compensated in Denmark. Saudi Arabia ranked second, with many expats reporting ample job opportunities for experienced professionals. Three-quarters of...
