Prague is offering a packed lineup of free events this September, from an air show and science festivals to a rare public viewing of the Czech Crown Jewels and a celebration marking a local brewery’s 15th anniversary.
Here are some of the best events taking place across the Czech capital this month.
Free Sightseeing at Historic Sites
The National Heritage Institute will open selected state-owned castles, chateaux, monasteries and other historic sites to visitors for free on Sunday, September 27.
Most of the properties managed by the institute will take part, although the tours and routes available will vary by location. Free admission will cover standard tours and selected additional routes. Capacity is limited, so visitors must book a free ticket online in advance for a specific time.
Prague 10 Science Festival
The Prague 10 Science Festival returns to Gutovka on Saturday, September 12.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., 25 stations will offer visitors the chance to take part in chemistry experiments, explore LEGO robotics, play math games and learn more about nature, technology and the human body.
The program will also include workshops, a competition, a toy and plant swap, and a science show by Michael Londesborough. DJ SÂN will perform from 6 p.m., with the festival continuing until 8 p.m.
The Dokola Festival will take place on September 10 and 11, focusing on creative ways to reuse items rather than throw them away.
Visitors can repair broken electronics, make furniture from leftover wood, upcycle old clothes or try making kimchi. The program will also feature talks, a clothes swap, an upcycled fashion show and stand-up comedy. Most of the program is free, although some workshops charge a nominal fee.
Břevnov Brewery Celebrates 15 Years
Břevnov Brewery will mark its 15th anniversary on Saturday, September 12, with a day of beer, live music and family activities.
From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the meadow beside Břevnov Monastery will feature beer from the local brewery, along with special brews from other monastic breweries from across the Czech Republic.
Live performances by HUGO, Funk Corporation and JAKSI TAKSI will accompany guided brewery tours, barrel-throwing and timed barrel-rolling competitions, as well as activities for children.
There will also be a workshop for visitors interested in learning how to brew beer at home.
Czech Crown Jewels on Display
One of Prague’s most prestigious treasures will go on public display this month, when the Czech Crown Jewels are exhibited in Vladislav Hall at Prague Castle from September 19 to 28. Admission is free.
The exhibition marks 500 years since Ferdinand I of Habsburg became King of Bohemia. Alongside the famous St. Wenceslas Crown, the display will feature the royal sceptre and orb, a coronation robe dating from 1653 and historic keys once used by guardians of the Crown Archive.
Visitors will enter through the South Gardens and Bull Staircase from Hradčanské Square. Everyone must pass through a security check, and organizers advise against bringing prams.
After a two-year break, Letňany Airport will once again open its doors to the public on Saturday, September 5.
This year’s event will focus on legendary training aircraft and pilot training during World War II and the postwar years.
The program will feature historic aircraft from the Czech Republic and abroad, demonstrations by the Czech Army and police, model aircraft and a chance to see the airport’s current operations.
Events will take place in half-hour blocks between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
