This weekend, the Czech Republic is set to undergo a minor decrease in temperatures accompanied by widespread showers and thunderstorms, as forecasted by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ). The following week is expected to bring back sunnier and warmer weather. Based on the meteorologists’ weekly weather forecast shared on Facebook, today most areas, except the northeastern part of the country, can expect summer temperatures above 25 °C. Tomorrow (Friday), the majority of regions will continue to experience summer-like temperatures. However, cloud cover will increase, and there is a likelihood of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, especially in Bohemia. During the weekend, a slight cooling trend is anticipated. The skies will alternate between partial cloudiness, heavy clouds, and showers, while thunderstorms are expected on Saturday. Daytime temperatures on Saturday will range from 20 to 24 °C, reaching as high as 26 °C in the Polabí and Poohří regions. Tourism in the Czech Republic is highly valued by its residents, especially those living in tourist-exposed areas, who recognise even better the benefits of this sector for the country than the rest of the population. According to a survey by the Institute of Tourism of the Czech Tourism Office, CzechTourism, thee overall rate for the so-called irritation index was 2.02 for tourism-exposed areas and 1.89 for the entire country, indicating a relatively low level of concern about tourism. Notably, the irritation index is even lower when considering the entire Czech Republic. This suggests that Czechs are aware of tourism’s positive impacts and advantages, warmly embracing the presence of travellers. Based on the survey results, residents of Náchod, Hřensk, and Bezděz expressed a moderate level of irritation towards tourism, with respective scores of 2.63, 2.32, and 2.29. However, these scores are relatively low, suggesting that the level of concern from the local community is nearly balanced or in a state of equilibrium. “24 per cent of people who live in tourist-exposed localities are literally enthusiastic about the growth of tourism, so they very much welcome the development of tourism and have a positive attitude towards it. The same applies to the...
Czech police said Tuesday that they have broken up an international ring suspected of smuggling migrants from Turkey to western Europe. A total of 14 suspects – 13 foreigners whose countries of origin were not specified and a Czech citizens – have been arrested in raids across the country in recent days, police said. The suspects allegedly organized a transport of at least 1,000 illegal migrants since 2021, earning at least 1 million euros. The smugglers face up to 16 years in prison if tried and convicted. The migrants have been using the Czech Republic as a transit route on their way to the West, officials said, and mostly do not apply for asylum in Czechia, as the country is also known. In February, the Czech government lifted controls, which were renewed at the country’s border with Slovakia in September amid a new wave of migration, mostly from Syria.
The European Commission has announced the inauguration and opening of the renovated railway service in South Moravia calling it a significant development for the region of Czechia that was made through the Cohesion Policy. In a statement issued on June 22, the same authority stated that adding 37 new electric units to the railway line would undoubtedly positively impact the congestion issues during peak hours. By introducing these new units, the capacity of the South-Moravian railway will be enhanced, allowing for a smoother and more efficient transportation experience for the about 22 million passengers who rely on this railway each year. “The new railway units will provide efficient rail services and contribute to making the European Green Deal a reality. I am happy that this project is being inaugurated today and will now concretely improve the life of Czech citizens on South Moravia,” the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said on Friday. The project, which was approved in December 2019, received €223 million of funding from the Cohesion Policy during the 2014-2020 programming period. According to EU Commission, this funding significantly contributed to the project’s overall budget of €265 million. The introduction of modern rolling stock brings numerous...
According to the National Drug Control Centre, the sale of drugs has increasingly moved to the internet, especially via social networks such as Telegram. Last year, online drug trafficking recorded a significant increase, according to the annual report of the Czech National Drug Control Centre (NPC) published today. Traffickers use not only hidden websites but mainly social networks to send banned substances to consumers. Payment is often made by means of cryptocurrencies. In particular, the sale of drugs via the social network Telegram has significantly increased. The Czech police emphasize that the anonymity, relative ease, and wide range of substances that can be purchased on virtual markets are in no way inferior to traditional street sales. According to the NPC, last year mainly new psychoactive substances and substances with anabolic or hormonal effects were offered on publicly accessible internet platforms. The distribution takes place via e-shops whose domains are mostly located abroad. Demand is particularly high for substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, marijuana, and drugs with antidepressant effects. Until 2021, the activity of drug traffickers in this network was negligible in the Czech Republic, according to criminologists. The annual police report points out that the number of Telegram groups...
The Czech government agreed to give the green light to ratify the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence on Wednesday, sending the document to the Chamber of Deputies for a decision. The Czech Republic is among a minority of six EU countries, including Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, Latvia and Lithuania, that have not yet ratified the document. The Czech Republic is the only country from the group where the debate on the convention is moving towards adoption. “We have approved the ratification of the Convention on the Prevention and Combating of Violence at the governing cabinet meeting. Any step that helps prevent sexualised violence and violence against women is a good step,” Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan (STAN) tweeted after Wednesday’s government meeting. “The Convention should also contribute to the more sensitive treatment of victims. I hope that it will soon pass the Chamber of Deputies,” Rakušan added. The Czech Republic signed the Istanbul convention in 2016, but parliament was never allowed to vote on it until now. Whether the document will pass parliament remains uncertain as the current Czech five-party coalition government remains divided, while centrist parties – STAN, Czech Pirates (Greens/EFA affiliated) and...
The idea of a lower VAT rate on products made from recycled materials, which could be applied at the EU level, will be presented by Czech Environment Minister Petr Hladík at the meeting of EU environment ministers on Tuesday. Currently, EU law does not allow member states to reduce VAT on products made from recycled materials. However, the Czech Republic wants to introduce a reduced 12% VAT on these products as a part of a tax package aiming to consolidate public finances. The lower rate must be allowed at the EU level for such a move. According to the minister, the reduced VAT should be applied to all plastic products made from recycled materials, including toys, hygiene tools, daily necessities, snow rakes, flower pots, and even building materials. “These are also materials that today end up either in landfills or incinerators that we can recycle for use in the municipal sector, such as benches or urban furniture,” Hladík told Czech media on Monday. The minister said possibly including products made from secondary raw materials at a lower rate would encourage the development of a circular economy. At the same time, it would increase the motivation of end customers to use...
Food stalls, bistros, cafés and restaurants are all still short of staff. According to the Association of Small Businesses, there are up to 20 percent fewer restaurant staff than four years ago. Currently, the chance to find a job or a temporary job in the industry is not difficult. The interest in hospitality jobs has waned since before the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic changed the image of the industry. The connection that restaurant jobs can bring has been seriously underestimated in the wake of the pandemic. For young people, starting their working lives, hospitality is the perfect opportunity to gain experience with customer service and teamwork. Luboš Kastner from the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises and Entrepreneurs says all hospitality jobs are understaffed at the moment but most of the pain comes in the kitchen with chefs and kitchen professions, like line cooks particularly understaffed. These are professions that require a certain education and craft so they cannot be temporary workers, says Kastner. There is also a lack of front of house servers. Since servers can be trained on the job, these positions do not require as much experience as the kitchen staff. The temporary work that is available...
Starlink, the satellite-based ISP model owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has reportedly launched commercial services in the Czech Republic, according to online portal ISP.page. The service, which promises broadband internet access in remote and rural areas, is tipped to have a significant impact on internet connectivity in a country where over 300,000 households currently lack access to high speed internet services. The ISP claims to provide customers with download speeds of up to 150Mbps and uploads of a maximum 30Mbps with low latency and good reliability, while satellite news agency TS2 notes that the cost of the equipment and access charges – current pricing for the Starlink kit, which includes a satellite dish and modem, is USD499, with a monthly subscription fee of USD99 – could limit its initial take-up. Starlink the newcomer began developing the platform back in 2021, claiming it would deliver reliable ‘5G’ connectivity in remote locations with poor ground cable infrastructure. The link is provided from a network of more than 1,500 satellites brought into space by SpaceX, and provides an alternative to fibre-optics/cables in the ground or mobile broadband from wireless operators. Until now, however, the service has been very much limited to select testing at the pre-commercial level....
Prague is the best region to live in the Czech Republic again this year, followed by the Hradec Kralove Region and the Vysocina Region, according to the Place to Live survey carried out by the Databank agency. Karlovy Vary Region was the worst region. The thirteenth edition of the comparative survey, known as Place to Live (Místo pro život), revealed these rankings. The survey was conducted by the analytical agency Datank and sponsored by the company Communa, which awarded the winning regions. Various social and environmental parameters, as well as resident satisfaction, were assessed in this research. The survey encompassed areas such as ecology and the environment, childcare, education, and safety. Prague was commended for its exceptional health and social care, which can be attributed to its high number of doctors and dentists, low average morbidity rate, and lengthy life expectancy. Additionally, Prague boasts highly regarded universities and outstanding performance by students in state matriculation exams for Czech and mathematics. Infrastructure and the job market also received high marks, with the city offering the highest average wages. However, the survey revealed that the capital city faces challenges in terms of ecology and safety. The city exhibits the lowest proportion of...
The long-criticized Czech Agriculture Minister Zdeněk Nekula is set to be dismissed from his post later on Wednesday after a less than satisfactory performance in recent months, which was not helped by rising food prices. Government officials called an extraordinary press conference in the Chamber of Deputies for 2:30 p.m. where they are expected to announce that Nekula will be replaced by former KDU-ČSL party chairman, Marek Výborný. The move has been in the pipeline for several weeks, according to sources cited by the Echo 24 news outlet. Nekula has faced public criticism, and members of his own party have expressed concern over what they consider to be insufficient efforts by the agriculture minister in lowering food prices. Nekula sought to assert his position in a press conference on Tuesday in which he explained that food prices were 14.5 percent higher year-over-year in May, compared to almost 25 percent back in January. He did concede, however, that this doesn’t tell the whole story, revealing that staple food items continue to rise at considerable speed. “Some foods have even become more expensive compared to April,” he told the press, citing meat, dairy products, and vegetables as examples. Other critics took issue...
