This year’s Christmas tree for Prague has been felled and preparations are underway for its transport to the Czech capital. The 24-metre tall spruce tree will grace Prague’s Old Town Square and will be officially lit on November 30th. The tree is sunk two metres into the ground. At the level of 6 metres and 13 metres, there are two steel sleeves to which steel ropes are attached that are anchored to blocks weighing several tonnes. That is to prevent the tree from breaking or falling in case of a gale. This year’s Christmas tree for Prague will come from the village of Semily (Liberec Region) in the north of the Czech Republic. The 24-meter spruce was selected by experts from some forty-two trees, suggested by the public. The market organizing firm Taiko looks for trees that are in danger of being cut down in the near future. This way, the impact of cutting down the tree is minimal as it was already destined to come down. The colourful Christmas markets in the Old Town Square and in Wenceslas Square will begin this Saturday (November 30rd) and last until January 6, 2020.
Ready to live an interactive experience? Image yourself in a historical abandoned building from the 17th century. This space will come to life and allow you to feel and see the synergy between music and art. It’s an experience and event that you don’t want to miss on, the Katarze’s First Encounter. On Saturday, December 7th, the music and art world will mesh at Katarze’s first encounter in the abandoned Nuselský Pivovar. Historical fun fact: it was once of the largest and most visited industrial breweries in Central Europe. This might be the last time to get the privilege to experience the inside of this building. On this night, lose yourself in the sounds of two up-and-coming artists from Hamburg, Germany: Jonez and Fathia. Be a part of giving both of them a warm welcome, as they will be playing in the Czech Republic for the first time. Fathia’s love and connection to the German sounds has led her to be invited to play with world-respected DJ Adam Bayer, and has recently released two new track releases, Encoding/ Decoding. Along with Jonez and Fathia and Czech DJ Vilem will be performing a LIVE set in this space enriched with art...
The first art machine in the Czech Republic launched on Tuesday. Located in the upper part of Krymská Street in Prague 10, Artmat is made from an old cigarette machine that has a new look and function. Every box that falls out of the machine hides a small piece of art from students or graduates of art schools, but also from renowned Czech artists. The aim of the project is mainly to introduce young artists (students and recent graduates). The form of selling art in old vending machines is inspired by other countries, particularly Germany, where similar vending machines are popular places to obtain an original souvenir. In this old cigarette vending machine, those interested will now find boxes with small works of art such as graphic prints and illustrations, which are always accompanied by a text. “It is an original opportunity to spread quality art to the wider public, to support the work of young artists and to enrich the public space,” said Artmat founders Petra Widžová and Josefína Frýbová. They have been following the burgeoning art scene for a long time, selecting interesting and quality artists and designers. The unusual, playful form and location of the vending machine...
Also this year the sweet scent of mulled wine and trdelník will waft around Prague Castle. The tradition of holding a Christmas market at the seat of the Czech presidents began four years ago when the Christmas markets finally used the space of the largest castle complex in the world and began attracting visitors with a high-quality range of carefully selected products. Dozens of stalls will be pitched on Náměstí u Sv. Jiří (St. George’s Square) and Stájový dvůr which can be reached on foot from U Prašného mostu Street. It is also just a few steps away from Golden Lane. From St. George’s Square you can witness the monumental St. Vitus Cathedral, as well as St. George’s Basilica with its beautiful Baroque facade and the lesser-known All Saints Church. The market offers more than 70 wooden stalls with both traditional and unconventional products and various kinds of hot food and drinks. You will avoid the endless crowds, which belong inherently to the Old Town Square Christmas Market, and, moreover, you will spend your time in one of the most remarkable places that Prague can offer. Opening hours Mo – Thu 9:00 – 18:00 Fr – Su 9:00 – 19:00 24. 12....

On 13th December, Netsky (DJ set) is coming to Prague for his solo headline show. Apart from Netsky’s famous signature show, you can look forward to heavy local DJ support, that will create a special night. Boris Daenen, which is Netsky’s real name, took the dancefloor and charts by storm with his pop and electro-infused bass. After a difficult time in which he lost his father, the young DJ moved to LA and recorded his new album. The soon-to-be-released two-part record simultaneously introduces his brand of pop and underground club tracks. He made his debut with a string of successful singles in 2009. His way up continued with the release of 2 albums and a handful of a remix for high profile names across genres such as Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Pendulum, Rusko or Swedish House Mafia. “From the age of two or three, I started to play rhythms on pots and pans in the kitchen. I guess my parents quickly realized they’d given birth to a drummer! My grandmother bought me my first kit when I was about five and I started having lessons a couple of years later. The drum teacher was great. Even though I was young, he...
Christmas markets (Vánoční trhy) are a key ingredient of the festive magic in the Czech Republic, and the Prague markets are the most impressive in the country. They light up the city, bringing locals and tourists together in a true ‘winter wonderland’ setting. The Namesti Miru Christmas market officially opens today, November 20th and is the first Christmas market of the season. It features more handmade goods than the touristy products that the Old Town Square market sells. You can find goods such as handmade soaps and lotions, jewelry, wooden toys, ceramic decorations, crystals, scarves and so on. The imposing neo-Gothic Church of St. Ludmila overlooks the wintery Christmas market, complete with a massive Christmas tree and Nativity scene. Food stands are offering grilled meat or sausages; please your sweet tooth with apple strudel, gingerbread, cookies, waffles, roasted almonds, cotton candy. If you want to opt for a hot drink, choose among honey wine (Medovina); mulled wine (svařák); hot chocolate (horká čokoláda); or grog, a mixture of rum, water, lemon, and sugar. This year, this Prague Christmas market will open on November 20 and shut down on December 24 and will be open from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm each day.
