Prague’s gastronomic concept of Martin Barry’s Manifesto is getting ready to open a new branch on the other side of the Vltava river. This time, water, beer, and Smíchov will be the main focus of the new Manifesto branch. The second temporary market, which was recently invested in by Jakob Havrlanta’s band Rockaway Capital, will be developed on an empty provisional parking lot next to the Národní Dům building in Smíchov, which under the direction of Torino-Praga Invest, will soon be going under reconstruction. Manifesto wants to be situated in a local area, to attract the most customers, but even though it’s located right between Újezd and Anděl, it tends to be very empty during the day. The one in Smíchov won’t follow the original container concept from Florenc, which was founded last year with the partnership of Penta, and a street furniture supplier named mmcité. The architecture duo, Ondřej Chybík, and Michal Krištof, have a green oasis with a water surface planned for this market. The official opening will be released sometime during May by the founders. The main attraction is supposed to be beer. “For the Manifesto in Smíchov, we’re going to create a concept in which the...
CrossFit is a word that I have heard a hundred times in the past few months. I never really paid attention to what exactly it means and why it is so popular, but after a couple of friends of mine literally didn’t shut up about it I decided to learn more about it. CrossFit is definitely no longer just a trend in the fitness world as I thought. It has now become a lifestyle. With over 15,000 gyms and thousands of trainers around the world, it has become very popular and you can find CrossFit gyms in any big city around the world. If you are thinking about starting with CrossFit here are the 4 most common reasons why you should. 1. Community The power of community in CrossFit is big and for many people, this is the key to their dedication. People in CrossFit are one big family that share not just a passion for fitness but also life stories. Everyone knows each other, and everyone is willing to help and support each other which is something you will not find in your regular gym. 2. Variety Most of the people that go to a regular gym can find CrossFit training...

The business started in the living room as an inconspicuous project to help homeless people. When Pavla Klečková and Manu Chilaud built their first emergency shelter a year ago, which they called Iglou, they probably had no idea what to expect. The easily portable and foldable shelter has taken over very quickly throughout the Czech Republic, and this year it should also reach beyond past its borders. The current form of the Iglou is the sixth improved version. The concept itself, however, attracted great attention from the onset, whether by local authorities or field workers from domestic organizations that help homeless people. This alternative roof for homeless people was originally to appear only in the three cities of the Moravian-Silesian region where the designers live. However, the plan to make 10 such shelters became a larger matter. Klečková and Chilaud, together with the inventor of the first prototype, Frenchman Geoffroy de Reynal, will launch production in bulk. Iglou will also travel abroad for the first time. “Last week we came back from France to discuss the details. The plan is to create between 300 and 600 pieces for the next winter, for example for Slovakia, England or Belgium,” Chilaud reveals. In addition, the...
The Czech vocabulary-building app Vocabulary Miner by Czech SKOUMAL Studio helps you memorize vocabulary that you really need. The new Word lists labeled as #speakmoreapp are tailored to the needs of expats and travelers specifically and are available in 12 languages. Users can effectively learn Czech, Serbian, German, English, and other languages through Flashcards. Zuzana Pápayová, the project coordinator, explains the rationale behind the idea of focusing on expats and travelers: “Anyone who has ever been to a foreign country knows how confusing it can be without knowing a single word of the local language. You want to say more but you just cannot. Learning just basic vocabulary already helps overcome the fear of speaking and prevents misunderstandings. You´ll easily fill in forms, explain the pain at the doctor’s, and you’ll be free from shopping with Google Translate.” An issue that is quite familiar and common for many foreigners living in Prague. Just recently in our Prague Morning ‘Expats in Prague’ Community, a lot of users expressed frustration at what more could be done to make public services/offices more accessible to expats. Though this isn’t a direct solution, it is a direct method in taking better control and action of...
According to the Henley Passport Index, which periodically ranks the world’s passports in order of the number of countries that its holders have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to, three Asian countries – Japan, Singapore, and South Korea – jointly occupy the first position with access to 189 countries. Germany is in close second position with visa-free/ visa-on-arrival to 188 countries, thanks to a recent visa agreement with Uzbekistan. This dynamic rating has seen a major shift over the last few years. For example, in 2015, the United Kingdom and the United States of America jointly held the first position. The Henley Passport Index is based on authoritative data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and bases its rankings on how many countries a passport entitles a traveller to enter without having to pre-apply for a visa. Dr. Christian H. Kälin, group chairman of Henley & Partners, says despite rising isolationist sentiment in some parts of the world, most countries remain committed to collaboration and mutually beneficial agreements. “Historical data from the Henley Passport Index over the past 14 years shows an overwhelming global tendency towards visa openness,” he said in a release. “In 2006, a citizen, on average, could...

Vinohradský Pavilon is an interesting alternative to the conventional shopping centres that are most of the time overcrowded and can become horrible experiences instead of pleasurable ones. In particular, this place is situated in a former marketplace building and was reconstructed into a modern, three-story shopping gallery with a slightly industrial look and with various interior design shops, home accessories, electronics, lighting ideas, florists or even bikes. All the brands come from the Czech Republic and are unique when it comes to style and design. However, prepare your budgets, because some of the goods presented can be pricey, but if you decide to invest some money into your house interior, you can truly find some masterpieces with the best quality. Alternatively, you can just come and gather some ideas for your dream house (that is what I do all the time). There is also an open cafe in the middle of the centre for you to relax and have a break; it is from a coffee brand La Bohème Café and there is an actual coffee place just a few streets away (check out our article!). That is still not everything what you can find here: they also organise art exhibitions and...
For the third consecutive year, Switzerland has held on to its title as the world’s best country, according to a new ranking from US News and World Report. With the world’s every move scrutinized by a 24-hour news cycle, any country wanting to improve its image must consistently demonstrate its economic, industrial, social and political worth. Seeking to examine a nation’s worth beyond hard metrics alone, US News & World Report’s fourth annual ‘2019 Best Countries’ rankings surveyed more than 20,000 global citizens to gauge their perceptions of 80 nations. The study, developed by BAV Group and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, asked participants to score each country out of 10 based on 65 attributes that contribute to its success on the global stage. These attributes were grouped into nine sub-rankings: Adventure, Citizenship, Cultural Influence, Entrepreneurship, Heritage, Movers, Open for Business, Power and Quality of Life. The Czech Republic has gone down from 33th to 41st place. Although the Czech Republic is very well evaluated in many rankings, we have little influence in the world (68th place), and we even reach 78th place in how our dynamics, the ability to accept new challenges and the uniqueness of development are perceived. Compared with...
The Prague Carnival kicked off here on Saturday with a parade featuring traditional costumes and masks. The carnival will last several days during which a series of events will be held. “Masopust”, (also known as “fašank”), the time of carnivals which historically ended on Ash Wednesday, is the oldest continuous holiday feast in the Czech lands. It’s Žižkov that holds the honour of hosting the longest-standing Masopust celebration in the city with its parade and festivities in Jiřího z Poděbrad Square taking place for over 25 years. During the carnival period, the square is filled with live music, great food and lots of drinks. Parade spectators can expect to see larger than life puppets, colourful floats and whimsical costumes winding through the streets, finishing off with an impressive firework display in Park U Viktorky Zizkov. There will also be several events and exhibits taking place throughout the season in Old Town. For those looking to dive headfirst into Masopust, a short bus or train journey just past the Prague Zoo to the suburb of Roztoky will present the opportunity to experience one of the biggest celebrations of local traditions. One of the perks of attending the Roztoky Masopust parade is that carnival masks...
