This year’s Prague Pride will put the focus on the LGBTI family. The organizers aim to raise awareness of LGBTI family members to challenge the tendency to label them as just gay or lesbian. “In the campaign, we want to mainly focus on how often homosexual children are considered black sheep of the family,” festival director Hana Kulhánková said. “We would like gays, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people to be perceived as comprehensive personalities who are something more than the gay or lesbian labels,” she added. The Pride festival will take place from 6-12 August, with over 100 LGBTI-themed events including film screenings, theatre performances, seminars, and debates. As always, there will be a march through the city center on 11 August. Awareness of LGBTI rights in the Czech Republic has grown over the last few years, but campaigners are still working to push through progressive legislation. LGBTI people still cannot adopt or foster children, and registered partners have no right to joint property and widow’s or widower’s pension, the organizers said. Transgender people must also undergo sterilization in order to change their registered sex. This year’s Pride week will celebrate a major piece of legislative progress, following the submission of a draft...
A carsharing project for electric cars has launched in Prague. The company Re.volt has electric cars that can be rented through a smartphone app. Carsharing allows people who are registered with a particular company to use an app to find a car parked near them and then rent it for a short amount of time. It is not related to ridesharing services, which function more like taxis, as the service does not include a driver. The Re.volt carsharing app asks for basic information from the user and a selfie as proof of identity before cars can be rented, as well as a deposit. The service is open to people with a permanent residence. Read the full article here (via Prague.TV)

Czechs are the second-heaviest drinkers, tied with France, in both the European Union and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), according to OECD health statistics released recently. Lithuania was first in both cases. But health officials warn that this achievement is a warning sign and that alcohol is a significant burden on the Czech healthcare system. Czechs drank 11.7 liters of alcohol, compared to Lithuania’s 13.2 liters. The analysis counted the amount of pure alcohol in spirits, wine, beer and other beverages with higher than 0.5 percent content consumed by people 15 years old and higher, using figures from 2016. Zurich is the most expensive in the world for food, according to UBS Group AG’s Prices and Earnings report for 2018, a survey ranking global city prices, earning levels, purchasing power and working time to buy common goods. Prague has been placed 50th in the annual index. Switzerland’s Zurich is followed by Geneva, Oslo, Copenhagen and New York, while Kiev, Lagos and Cairo are the cheapest cities. The report showed that the average worker in Zurich needed to work 38.2 hours to earn enough to purchase an Apple iPhone. An average worker in Johannesburg needed to work 291.9 hours to earn enough to buy the same smartphone. First launched in 1971 and now in its 17th edition, the report compares 128 prices of various goods and services of a three-person European family. The final calculations also take into account the average earnings of 15 professions representing the average working population. All calculations are shown relative to New York, which is the reference city. Author: red
The second total lunar eclipse of 2018 will be visible in large parts of Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America. Totality will last for 103 minutes, making it the longest eclipse of the 21st century. The eclipse will start at 20:24 Prague time, but over the territory of the Czech Republic, the Moon will appear only by 20:47. What is the Blood Moon of July 27? Unlike with solar eclipses, you need no special equipment to observe lunar eclipses. These latter events, which occur when the moon passes into Earth’s shadow, are safe to view directly with the naked eye, telescopes or binoculars. The moon turns deep red or reddish brown during eclipses, instead of going completely dark. That’s because some of the sunlight going through Earth’s atmosphere is bent around the edge of our planet and falls onto the moon’s surface. Earth’s air also scatters more shorter-wavelength light (in colors such as green or blue); what’s left is the longer-wavelength, redder end of the spectrum. When is the best time to see the 2018 total lunar eclipse? We recommend going outside at different times throughout the night on July 27 to catch every stage of the eclipse. Those lucky enough to see the...
For travelers looking for natural beauty and peace of mind, Iceland may be the safest bet according to the latest Global Peace Index list from the Australian Institute of Economics and Peace. The rankings are based on a report from the Institute for Economics and Peace, which takes into account statistical factors such as murder rates and military expenditure, as well as perceptions of criminality and terrorism levels. The peace coefficients of 163 countries and regions are then divided into five categories according to their security situation: very high, high, medium, low and very low. Among them, Iceland has been rated as the “Safest country in the world” for the 10th consecutive. The next nine countries are New Zealand, Austria, Portugal, Denmark, Canada, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Singapore, and Japan. In its seventh year of civil war, Syria remains at the bottom of the Index, followed by Afghanistan and South Sudan. Author: red
Do you have a zest for life and passion for what you do? Do you want to date similarly oriented people? This new dating app developed in Amsterdam might be just what you’ve been waiting for. The app itself is actually nicer than the likes of Tinder – there’s no cruel swiping or rejection involved – it simply allows you to message those you fancy speaking to. The other thing that we liked about it was, that The Inner Circle pretty much has all the benefits of other popular dating apps like swiping around (Tinder), location search (Happn), selectivity (Once), but offers more straightforward connecting where you can just write a person a message if you really like the person, instead of waiting for a right match after 1000’s of swipes or likes. Behind the scenes, the team at Inner Circle curate and personally approve each member, keeping the oddballs and creeps found on other apps firmly out of the picture. To be honest, this app isn’t for everyone, and that’s probably the point. But, who knows? This could maybe solve your dating epidemic, so if you’re looking to meet ambitious singles (or if you’re just mad curious like we...
