Smoking-related illnesses have dropped since the smoking ban in bars and restaurants took effect at the end of May last year across the Czech Republic. The Institute of Health Information and Statistics (ÚZIS ČR) compared the number of hospitalizations for the first six months of the smoking ban in restaurants with the same period when they were still smoking. “In diseases such as heart attack, angina pectoris, coronary artery disease or asthma, limiting smoking can show effects almost immediately,” said Eva Králíková, chairwoman of the Society for the Treatment of Tobacco Dependence. The Czech Republic has long been known for having the highest beer consumption per capita, but recently people have been trading quantity for quality. For the first time in history, sales of 11 degree and 12 degree have overtaken sales of over lower quality beers. Degrees refer to a beer’s density due to malt sugar content before brewing. This affects the alcohol content as well as the flavor and body of the beer. Ten degree and lower beers are considered by connoisseurs to be watery and less robust, but due to the lower alcohol content, more volume can be consumed at any one time. MW is a Czech firm located an hour’s drive southwest of Prague that, this week, unveiled what it said on its website was, “Not a concept.” The car, they insist, is “real.” It’s an electric called the Luka EV. MW announced the car with a YouTube video posted on Monday. MW says it’s, “the first production car to use in-wheel hub motors.” MW—slogan “We challenge the norm”—also says on its website that the car will have a motor on each wheel making 66 horsepower. It also says the range will be 300 kilometers, or around 186 miles. The top speed is 90 mph. It goes zero to 60 in 9.6 seconds. The Luka EV seats two and is built on an aluminum frame, with composite materials used for the body. Power comes from four electric motors, which are positioned in each wheel hub. MW says development is ongoing so figures may differ once production starts. The company is in the process of having the car independently certified and crash tested and will reveal further details as development continues. The best part? MW estimates a starting price of 750,000 CZK. Author: red
“Stop Plastic” is the motto of the campaign launched by the Ministry of the Environment to reduce the amount of plastic used in restaurants and bars. The Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic started to negotiate with restaurants and fast food chains on possible ways to reduce the use of plastic plates and containers. “Through negotiations, we want to reach voluntary agreements with the companies. We are going to demand a drastic reduction in the use of plastic. It can be quite simple, it would be enough to replace it with paper, for example,” said Richard Brabec. Among the main proposals also discounts for customers who order coffee in their own cups. According to statistics, Europeans use around 725 million plastic cups for coffee every day. Minister Brabec added that it is very likely that the European Union will outline some regulations in this regard, and it is therefore appropriate to start as soon as possible. One of the first steps was the ban on free plastic bags in supermarkets, which has been in place in the Czech Republic since the beginning of this year. The reduction in the use of plastic is an inevitable trend, as the quantity...

Who would be the best Czech barista of the year? That was the question that hundreds of visitors attending the Czech Barista Championship 2018 will ask themselves. The event takes place at Pragovka, art centre in Vysočany that holds exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events. The two-day final round of 12 competitors will take place on the weekend of 7th and 8th April. Visitors can taste espresso-based drinks and hand-brewed coffee from many local and international roasters. Coffee lectures and discussions will fill the time slots between the competition presentations. One of the greatest highlights is the chance to taste the competition coffees directly from the baristas after their routines. Czech Barista Champion 2017 title was earned by Jan Škeřík, the head-barista at Double B Prague. Last year, competitors were asked to prepare four espresso, four milk-based, and four custom coffee drinks under the scrutiny of an international jury in just a quarter of an hour.
