Karlovy Vary will open its doors to the prestigious 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival from 28 June to 6 July 2024. Get ready for an incredible week full of cinematic gems, meetings with prominent figures from the film industry, and unique experiences in this beautiful spa town. Big names announced include actor Viggo Mortensen, Oscar-winners Geoffrey Rush and Clive Owen, and director Steven Soderbergh. Czech police said they arrested a man who wounded a motorcyclist in the neck with a knife in the capital. Two other people were injured. The attack took place at a gas station on Argentinska street (Prague 7) at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Police said the 52-year-old suspect’s motive wasn’t immediately clear but they ruled out terrorism. Police said the suspect, a local citizen who was drunk, had a conflict with a total of six people. Prague’s rescue service said the motorcyclist was taken to a hospital for further treatment but added that his neck injury wasn’t serious. In the fourteenth year of the comparative research “Místo pro živo”, Prague City, the South Moravian Region, and the Hradec Králové Region were ranked on the podium. The Datank analytical agency evaluates the quality of living conditions in all regions of the Czech Republic using data from independent sources and a survey conducted among 1,600 residents. The Karlovy Vary Region came last this year. Prague Excels in Infrastructure, Education, and Healthcare Prague stands out in four of the eight areas surveyed, making it the best-performing city in the Czech Republic. The capital boasts excellent healthcare services, with the highest number of doctors and dentists per 1,000 inhabitants and the most hospital beds per 1,000 inhabitants. From August 5 to 11, Prague will host the 14th annual Prague Pride Festival, with this year’s main theme centered around family. Organizers describe the event as “a refreshing cocktail of queer culture, entertainment, and human rights activism.” This year’s festival is supported by three government members, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, and other notable figures. “We want to show that family is not defined by blood relation. What makes a family is love, mutual respect, and unconditional acceptance. Therefore, a family does not always have to be people who are connected by genes,” explains Kamila Fröhlichová, the festival director. She believes that a loving family can also be friends who support a person, give them a sense of belonging, and whom they have chosen themselves. Recently, Prague Morning had the pleasure to meet LaDana Edwards, a successful entrepreneur and the founder of skincare clinic Face Place. She shared with us her inspiring story, including her challenges and what brought her to Prague. The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Czech Republic will host the 2024 Korean Film Festival in Prague from 20 to 22 June at the Světozor cinema. The festival, sponsored by the Korean Film Council, will screen four Korean films recently released in South Korea, including Dog Days (2024), The Book of Fish (2021), Alienoid (2022) and Alienoid: Return to the Future (2024). Korean films, with their diverse genres and stories, have won awards at many international film festivals and are attracting audiences around the world. In the Czech Republic, the release of Parasite in 2019 has been an encouraging success. In addition, various Korean films are constantly introduced through the Asean+3 Film Festival, Filmasia or the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. A temporary memorial for the victims of the December attack at the Faculty of Arts will be unveiled on Jan Palach Square. The focal point is a three-meter-high stone object. The opening ceremony on June 21, 2024, will feature speeches from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Eva Lehečková, the Rector of Charles University, Milena Králíčková, the Mayor of Prague, Bohuslav Svoboda, and the Mayor of Prague 1, Terezie Radoměřská. Eva Lehečková expressed the need to honor those lost in the attack, emphasizing the importance of providing a place for the public to pay their respects. The memorial will be a crude sandstone monolith from Vyhnánov quarries, designed by Vojtěch Adamec and placed by architect Vojtěch Králíček. This temporary memorial will be available until a permanent one is created based on suggestions from the academic community and victims’ families. On Tuesday, June 18, Prague is expected to experience its first tropical day of the summer season, defined by forecasters as days when temperatures reach 30 degrees Celsius. In 2022, the European Space Agency (ESA) released heat maps of several European cities during a heatwave. The picture was taken by an instrument called ECOSTRESS, installed on board the International Space Station. It demonstrates to what extent the densely built up areas can warm up during the hot summer months and shows how hot the actual surface would feel to the touch. The observations took place exactly two years ago, on June 18, 2022, when the temperature in Prague reached 30°C. The thermal images revealed that the Holešovice neighborhood had the hottest ground and buildings on that day. Other parts of the city with extremely high land-surface temperatures include the area surrounding the O2 Arena in the Vysočany district and the industrial zone in Štěrboholy. “We are Czechs! We will never surrender, did you hear that? Never!” Those were the last words of the paratroopers from the crypt in Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius Church in Resslova street in Prague. On the 18th of June 1942, seven paratroopers lost their lives, among them were Warrant Officer Jozef Gabčík and Staff Sergeant Jan Kubiš, who were sent to eliminate the SS Obergruppenführer and General der Polizei Reinhard Heydrich, one of the highest-ranking nazi officers. In October 1941 after three years of occupation, the exiled Czechoslovak government in England decided that a show of strength was required. Operation Anthropoid was a World War 2 military operation with a specific assignment for two young allied paratroopers – Jan Kubiš and Josef Gabčík – namely the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The Nazis wanted immediate payback and two villages were proven to have supported the attack on Heydrich or to have actively supported the resistance. On June 10th the people of Lidice were rounded up, any male over 15 was shot, almost everybody else sent to death camps (young babies were adopted) and the village was destroyed. Red Bull Racing has announced that legendary Scottish driver David Coulthard will pilot a Formula 1 car in Prague’s Karlín along Rohanské nábřeží. On Saturday, August 17, the F1 car will be showcased in Prague, and the driver is just as noteworthy. Coulthard is returning to a city he knows well. “I have many friends here and visit Prague more often than my native Scotland. It’s a beautiful city, with great sights, cuisine, and people. I believe we’ll put on a memorable show,” says Coulthard, who last year launched a project in Prague to support women in motorsport. The F1 car, an RB7, dates back to 2011 when Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber won twelve out of eighteen Grands Prix.
