This weekend, the Czech Republic is set to undergo a minor decrease in temperatures accompanied by widespread showers and thunderstorms, as forecasted by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ). The following week is expected to bring back sunnier and warmer weather. Based on the meteorologists’ weekly weather forecast shared on Facebook, today most areas, except the northeastern part of the country, can expect summer temperatures above 25 °C. Tomorrow (Friday), the majority of regions will continue to experience summer-like temperatures. However, cloud cover will increase, and there is a likelihood of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, especially in Bohemia. During the weekend, a slight cooling trend is anticipated. The skies will alternate between partial cloudiness, heavy clouds, and showers, while thunderstorms are expected on Saturday. Daytime temperatures on Saturday will range from 20 to 24 °C, reaching as high as 26 °C in the Polabí and Poohří regions. On Sunday, meteorologists predict daytime highs of 22 to 26 °C, with slightly warmer temperatures in southern Moravia.
The Czech government said late on Wednesday it had banned all athletes representing Russia from taking part in local competitions as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continued. The government said it banned “the participation of individual athletes and sports teams representing the Russian Federation in sports competitions and games organised on Czech soil”. At the same time, athletes and teams representing the Czech Republic must not take part in competitions held in Russia, it added in a statement. The decision was taken at the request of Czech sports associations. Previously, Czech ice hockey players playing in the Russian-based Kontinental Hockey League could not play for the Czech national team, for instance. But the current ban applies to all sports and all athletes competing under the Russian and Czech flags, respectively. There was no information as to whether the move also concerns Belarusian athletes. The Czech Olympic Committee said earlier this year it was against Russian and Belarusian athletes competing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris under a neutral flag. An EU and NATO member of 10.8 million people, the Czech Republic has provided Ukraine with substantial military and humanitarian aid since the Russian invasion started in February 2022.
Prague City Tourism together with the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) has decided to extend the schedule of this highly-popular tourist attraction for the summer season, namely from 1 July to 3 September. The historic tourist tram line No. 42, which regularly starts at 10:00 from the tram loop at Dlabačov, will run every day until 18:00 during the summer months. Since the beginning of this year, it has covered over 8,000 kilometres and is equally popular with children, who make up a full third of all passengers. A ticket for the historic tram is valid for 24 hours and passengers can hop on and off at any time during the day. Along the route, which lasts about 40 minutes, visitors to Prague with a ticket can hop on and off at any time or wait for their preferred car. There are several trams on the line, including unique jewels manufactured in 1908, First Republic cars in Art Nouveau style, or newer versions of trams from the 1950s and 1960s. Summer cinemas are synonymous with Prague. The traditional summer cinema in Prague is the Kinobus from Dopravní podnik, which started its 16th season on Monday 26 June. Half of the films screened will be from Czech filmmakers. Foreign films include Top Gun: Maverick, What Have We All Done to Whom, Super-Blb, The Good Boss, and the animated film Puss in Boots. Tourism in the Czech Republic is highly valued by its residents, especially those living in tourist-exposed areas, who recognise even better the benefits of this sector for the country than the rest of the population. According to a survey by the Institute of Tourism of the Czech Tourism Office, CzechTourism, thee overall rate for the so-called irritation index was 2.02 for tourism-exposed areas and 1.89 for the entire country, indicating a relatively low level of concern about tourism. Notably, the irritation index is even lower when considering the entire Czech Republic. This suggests that Czechs are aware of tourism’s positive impacts and advantages, warmly embracing the presence of travellers. Based on the survey results, residents of Náchod, Hřensk, and Bezděz expressed a moderate level of irritation towards tourism, with respective scores of 2.63, 2.32, and 2.29. Czech police said Tuesday that they have broken up an international ring suspected of smuggling migrants from Turkey to western Europe. A total of 14 suspects – 13 foreigners whose countries of origin were not specified and a Czech citizens – have been arrested in raids across the country in recent days, police said. The suspects allegedly organized a transport of at least 1,000 illegal migrants since 2021, earning at least 1 million euros. The smugglers face up to 16 years in prison if tried and convicted. The migrants have been using the Czech Republic as a transit route on their way to the West, officials said, and mostly do not apply for asylum in Czechia, as the country is also known. In February, the Czech government lifted controls, which were renewed at the country’s border with Slovakia in September amid a new wave of migration, mostly from Syria.
The Czech police have arrested 14 people who are part of an international organised criminal group accused of organising and facilitating large-scale illegal migration from Turkey to Czechia and other EU countries. The police seized approximately CZK 900,000 in cash and two cars. The detainees face up to 16 years in prison. In the first five months of this year, Czechia provided Ukraine with 24 tanks, 76 infantry fighting vehicles and 645 anti-tank guided missiles, PM Petr Fiala announced at a press conference at the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday. The European Commission has announced the inauguration and opening of the renovated railway service in South Moravia calling it a significant development for the region of Czechia that was made through the Cohesion Policy. In a statement issued on June 22, the same authority stated that adding 37 new electric units to the railway line would undoubtedly positively impact the congestion issues during peak hours. By introducing these new units, the capacity of the South-Moravian railway will be enhanced, allowing for a smoother and more efficient transportation experience for the about 22 million passengers who rely on this railway each year. “The new railway units will provide efficient rail services and contribute to making the European Green Deal a reality. I am happy that this project is being inaugurated today and will now concretely improve the life of Czech citizens on South Moravia,” the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said on Friday.
