European gas prices surged this week after liquefied natural gas production in Qatar was halted and shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz were disrupted. While several EU countries face potential supply pressure, Czechia is not directly exposed to the current outage. At the Dutch TTF hub, the benchmark for European gas trading, prices climbed sharply. On Tuesday morning, gas rose by 26 percent to more than €56 per megawatt-hour. By midday, April contracts exceeded €64 per MWh, marking a rise of roughly 45 percent since the start of the week. The escalation follows attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East. On Monday, the Qatari state energy company QatarEnergy suspended LNG production after drones struck its Ras Laffan industrial complex and a power facility. Iran also targeted oil installations in Saudi Arabia, forcing parts of a refinery operated by Saudi Aramco to halt operations. Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz — a key corridor for global energy exports from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates — has been blocked since the weekend. The disruption immediately affected commodity markets. On Monday alone, European gas prices jumped by as much as 50 percent. Qatar supplies roughly 10 percent of Europe’s...

Reservations have opened for the spring edition of RestaurantWeek, which runs from March 17 to April 22 in Prague, Brno and Ostrava. Organizers say seats in the most sought-after restaurants are typically booked within days, though a wide range of options remains available. The festival will feature around 70 restaurants in Prague and about 20 each in Brno and Ostrava. This year’s theme, “From foodie to foodie,” aims to connect diners with chefs through carefully designed tasting menus and introduce guests to places they may not yet know. Prices remain unchanged from last year. Guests can choose festival menus priced at 790 CZK or 490 CZK, plus a booking fee of 79 CZK or 49 CZK. According to the organizers, the cost represents a reduction of up to 40 to 50 percent compared with standard menu prices outside the festival. The event was brought to the Czech Republic by Anna Grosmanová, known as Foodpioneer, who says the focus remains on the strength of the menu rather than the fame of the venue. This year’s edition highlights ingredients rarely seen on Czech menus. Among them is Hericium erinaceus, known as lion’s mane mushroom, a protected species in the wild that is...
The reconstruction of the New Stage of the National Theatre in Prague is expected to begin by the end of March and will continue for roughly two years. The contract was awarded to a consortium consisting of Metrostav DIZ, OHLA ŽS and Trigema. The total bid for the reconstruction reached 1.8 billion Czech crowns excluding VAT. The project combines heritage preservation with modern technology to create a multifunctional cultural space suited to 21st-century operation. The reconstruction will not change the external appearance of the building. All architecturally valuable interior spaces will be preserved, including the distinctive façade known for its television-like shell composed of approximately 4,000 glass panels created by Stanislav Libenský. The building was originally designed without theatre operation in mind. Its architectural solution was therefore already a compromise at the time of construction. While the structure does not fully meet the technological requirements of modern theatre production, it also does not perfectly reflect the original artistic vision behind the design. The New Stage, which became a cultural monument in 2021, will be transformed into a multifunctional hall offering variable stage and auditorium arrangements. After reconstruction, the space will accommodate up to 500 spectators and will use modern theatre...
Prague’s annual audiovisual festival Spectaculare returns on March 5 with a program that spans concerts, film screenings, workshops and exhibitions across the city. Now in its thirteenth edition, the event presents seventeen programs, including eight Czech premieres and several first-time appearances in Prague. The festival’s strongest draw comes at the end. On April 8, Berlin-based producer Apparat will perform at SaSaZu, introducing his new album A Hum of Maybe. Known for moving between club-driven electronics and restrained, song-based material, Apparat will appear with a live band, a format that has become central to his recent work. Two days later, the closing night shifts to Palác Akropolis, where Canadian composer Flore Laurentienne will perform in Prague for the first time. His music blends orchestral writing with analog synthesizers in slowly unfolding compositions. The evening opens with Polish pianist Zuzanna Całka. The opening night on March 5 brings British producer Rival Consoles and German composer Ben Lukas Boysen to MeetFactory. Both artists are known for carefully structured electronic compositions that build intensity through repetition and dynamic contrast. On March 7, French producer Thylacine performs at Lucerna Music Bar, accompanied by pianist Bravin Karunanithy. The program also includes Czech pianist Beata Hlavenková in...
Prague’s Exhibition Grounds are preparing for one of their busiest years in decades, with the long-awaited reopening of the Industrial Palace scheduled for September 2026. After 18 years of closure and extensive reconstruction, the building will once again host trade fairs, exhibitions and public events, returning to the cultural and economic life of the capital. The reopening will be accompanied by guided tours for the public. One of the first major events to partially take place in the restored palace will be Designblok in early October. Organizers say the building’s return marks a turning point for the entire complex, which has undergone gradual modernization while continuing to expand its event program. The 2026 calendar confirms the site’s role as one of Prague’s main venues for sport, culture and large public gatherings. Among the first major events of the spring will be the Running Expo, scheduled for March 26–27 in the Křižík Pavilions C, D and E. The event is free to attend and will bring together sports brands, technology companies and experts offering lectures and workshops for runners of all levels. The Marathon Expo will follow on May 1–2 in the Křižík Pavilions B and C, also with free admission. Both...
The name Giacomo Casanova has become synonymous with philanderers, seducers, and lovers of all pleasures. The renowned Italian adventurer spent the final years of his life at Duchcov Chateau (Ústí nad Labem Region). But why did he spend his last years there? Giacomo Casanova was born on 2 April 1725 in Venice into a family of actors. Although he did not come from the nobility, his intelligence, charisma, and ability to move among the elite allowed him to establish connections across Europe. His life was filled with love affairs, travels, and encounters with figures such as Voltaire, Mozart, and Empress Catherine the Great. Besides that, he worked as a diplomat, spy, philosopher, writer, and violinist. His charm was said to be irresistible, as evidenced by the more than 130 women he mentioned as his lovers in his memoirs. Giacomo Casanova arrived in Duchcov after being exiled from Venice, thanks to his friend Count Josef Karel of Waldstein, who offered him the position of librarian at his chateau in 1785. By then, Casanova was famous across Europe not only for his romantic escapades but also for numerous scandals and conflicts due to his fiery temperament. It was in Duchcov that Casanova...
Prague’s public transport network resumed its full timetable, ending the reduced winter schedule that had been in place since early January. Starting today, March 2, trams and buses across the city began running at standard intervals again, particularly during peak hours. The annual adjustment, often referred to as the “half-holiday” schedule, is introduced at the start of the year when passenger numbers typically fall. City officials cite lower demand and cost savings as the main reasons for temporarily limiting service. Unlike in previous years, metro operations were not reduced this winter and continued without interruption. With the return to regular service, tram frequencies during morning and afternoon rush hours have tightened. Standard tram lines now run every eight minutes instead of ten. On the city’s busiest routes — lines 9, 17 and 22 — trams are once again arriving every four minutes, down from five-minute intervals during January and February. Bus services have also increased in frequency. Most urban bus routes, including trolleybus line 58, are back to six-minute intervals in the morning peak, compared with 7.5 minutes during the winter schedule. Afternoon service has improved as well, with waiting times shortened from ten minutes to 7.5 minutes on many...
The Czech government is preparing to send repatriation flights to Egypt for Czech citizens currently in Israel, as regional airspace closures make direct evacuation impossible. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced the plan on the social network X on Sunday, saying Prague is ready to act immediately if conditions allow. Because Israeli airspace remains closed, evacuees would first need to travel overland by bus to Egypt, where Czech aircraft could collect them. The government will assess further steps at a meeting of the State Security Council scheduled for Monday morning. Air evacuation through other regional hubs is not an option. Airspace over the United Arab Emirates, Oman and several other Middle Eastern countries has also been shut, complicating efforts to move civilians out of the region. Foreign Minister Petr Macinka confirmed that aircraft are on standby should evacuation be required. He added that Prague is coordinating its approach with the Slovak government. The security situation deteriorated after Israel and the United States launched military strikes against Iran early Saturday. U.S. President Donald Trump said the operation aimed to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Iran responded with missile attacks targeting Israel and several Arab states, including countries hosting U.S. military...
Too Good To Go has launched a new service in the Czech Republic aimed at rescuing unsold flowers and potted plants. The Danish platform Too Good To Go, known locally for offering discounted surplus meals from restaurants and bakeries, has begun rescuing unsold flowers and houseplants. The concept mirrors the company’s food model. At the end of the day, florists assemble “surprise packages” from bouquets and potted plants that would otherwise be discarded. Customers ordering through the app do not know what they will receive. The box may contain a simple bunch of daisies, several roses, or a small decorative plant. The fixed price is 99 CZK, roughly one third of the standard retail value. More than 70 Czech flower businesses have joined the scheme since its launch. Participants include nationwide retailer Květiny Novák as well as independent studios such as Florentine Flowers. Company representatives say the expansion reflects a broader environmental focus. While the app first gained attention for tackling food waste, the environmental costs of flower production are also high, involving intensive water use and agricultural land. Unsold bouquets often end up in bins despite remaining fresh enough for use. The platform entered the Czech market last year...
Prague 10 has launched an architectural competition to reshape Svatopluk Čechovo náměstí in Vršovice, with plans that include a café, public toilets and major changes to traffic and public space. The district estimates the cost at 300 million crowns, excluding VAT. City officials say the square no longer meets the needs of residents. The goal is to make the space easier to navigate, better connected to surrounding streets and more suitable for everyday use as well as public events. Mayor Martin Valovič of the Civic Democratic Party said the district wants the square to become a defining public space, comparable to Náměstí Míru in Prague 2 or Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad in Prague 3. According to the town hall, the area has long been neglected. More than 650 residents submitted comments that were incorporated into the competition brief. A jury will take those views into account when assessing proposals. Locals have pointed to deteriorating greenery, poor maintenance, damaged benches and trash bins, uneven surfaces and weak lighting. Some residents also complain that secluded areas attract groups whose presence makes others uneasy. The area around the Church of St. Wenceslas is heavily planted. The parish has called for reducing dense vegetation...

The month opens with a South Korean Festival running from February 28 to March 1. The two-day event focuses on Korean food, lifestyle and culture. Visitors can try Korean dishes from pop-up vendors, including traditional family recipes from BabRyze, Korean corndogs from Basak, and fish-shaped Bungeoppang pastries from Cafe Banhada.
